About

The Project

Gossip Ghouls is the new film from R.J. Wilson Horror, written, directed, and edited by horror microshort filmmaker, R.J. Wilson.

Gossip Ghouls is a teen film told in seven parts. The film will be shot like a 90s television show, with references to such programs of the era like Dawson’s Creek, Are You Afraid of the Dark? Goosebumps, and Recess. Because R.J. Wilson Horror creates microshorts, all of the segments will be less than 60 seconds long. The five middle segments will each correspond to one of the five characters, bookended by two full-cast segments. Each character has their own macabre story to tell, and will feature their own unique story.

R.J. Wilson has a love for analog; he grew up in the age of video stores and recording your favorite shows onto tape. In essence, the film will appear as though it were stored on VHS. The film is about nostalgia. It’s about memories and storytelling. It’s about coming together, and how when someone says can say “remember when?”, people immediately fall into a trance, with waves of longing, fond memories and homesickness soaring through their body.

Outreach/Exhibition Plans

Gossip Ghouls is guaranteed distribution through Damnationland, the all-Maine made horror showcase. Every year, Damnationland brings an amassment of audience members to the State Theater in Portland, ME, around Halloween time, as Maine filmmakers set to scare the pants off of them with their content. Additionally, there are always DVDs of the films, as well as soundtracks that feature the music featured in the showcase, which can be found online or at your local Bull Moose. 2019 marks the tenth anniversary since Damnationland opened its doors to local independent filmmakers, and Gossip Ghouls will be opening and closing the program with several segments in between!

Linda Line as Valerie Miller

Linda is thrilled to be a part of this years independent film submission to the 10th anniversary of Damnationland! Raised on the stages of Southern Maine, she ventured down to pursue stage work in Miami, FL. Missing the slower, sweeter, side of life, she returned to Maine and soon found herself acting for film. From student films to union work to music videos and voice overs, Linda is excited to add some horror fun to the mix. She looks forward to this new adventure with an awesome group of talented artists!

Emily Eberhart as Lindsey "Purple" DePerpignan

Emily is very excited to be a part of GOSSIP GHOULS, her first project for Damnationland! A thespian of the stage, she is now making her way onto the big screen with festival and independent films such as Robbie Moore's BEGIN AGAIN and Crickett Cote's MY BABY SAW A BIRD. Emily is a normal 20-year-old aside from the fact that she goes to Germany every summer to visit her family. She is very excited to play Purple and hopes that everyone supports this team who will make this project a reality!

Michelle Faria as Tabitha "Zuke" Zukowski

Michelle Faria is a local performer from New England. She earned a BFA in Theater Performance at Salem State University and is also a singer and songwriter. She is excited to embark on her first film project with Gossip Ghouls

Hannah Perry as Quinn Felker

Hannah Perry is a Maine actress, originally from Buckfield. She studied theatre at The University of Southern Maine and now acts in plays and films of all kinds! Hannah currently lives in Augusta with her boyfriend Mike and their dog Hank. You may have seen her in The Party at Damnationland 2018. Hannah is honored to participate in Damnationland once again and with so many cool and spoooooky folks! Xoxo Gossip Ghoul

Our Team - The Crew

R.J. Wilson - Director, Writer, and Editor

R.J. Wilson is a filmmaker, editor, producer, and VHS hoarder based in Portland, Maine. For about five years, it has been his goal to “scare audiences in 60 seconds or less”; as such, his website, www.rjwilsonhorror.com, launched earlier this year, where you can watch his original horror microshorts and stay up to date with productions. From 2015 - 2017, he acted as one of several producers for Damnationland, and then as soundtrack producer in 2018. He also plays guitar for Portland thrashpunk and cokecore band, Eyeball.

Breanna Leigh Penney - Producer

Breanna Penney is an energetic filmmaker and avid adventurer in Portland, Maine. In the past, she has interned at Lone Wolf Media, an internationally established documentary group, and Bonfire films, working on both independent and client based projects. She is comfortable in both documentary and narrative production roles, while always looking for new ways to expand her knowledge. She is now working for Praxis Motion Pictures in Portland, Maine

Rebecca Myshrall - Art Director/Costumer

Rebecca Myshrall has been working on films in Portland for the past four years. She’s procrastinating on writing one of her own, but until then, making horror movies happen has become a bit constant in her mental frame. Please enjoy GOSSIP GHOULS.

Joseph Hyland - Director of Photography

Joseph Hyland has loved cinema since the age of 10. For this project, he will be pulling a lot of inspiration from his childhood, and his love of the 4:3 box frame. Additionally, he has been watching horror movies non-stop this past year to help bring these seven segments come to life. On the side, Joey also has a passion for making electronic music.

Budget

The budget is broken down into six departments: Equipment, Food, Art Direction/Costumes, Props (Built), Animation, and Misc. items.  The biggest portions of our budget are going to Art Direction/Costumes and Equipment. The reason being we have five main characters and three separate outfits for each of them, as well as six different locations. Some of these costumes we will need to order in time for them to be delivered prior to the shoot. We will be renting Equipment as well, and unfortunately since we are unable to shoot everything in one weekend (there are no scenes at the same location), we will be shooting one day each throughout the summer, meaning, we can't rent all equipment for one weekend; instead, we will have to rent multiple times for each shoot.

Food is a huge necessity, as we will need to feed both cast and crew on each of our shoot dates. It's one of the ways we thank everyone for doing their part on set, by giving them a nice hearty meal.

There are some scenes that will need built Props and Animation sequences; part of the budget will be going to these departments to gather materials for said sequences. And as for Misc. items, we will be supplying gas to those who have to drive long distances, as well as renting cars for scenes that need them.

Risks and challenges

We have five main characters (as well as a supporting cast) and six different locations! The challenge currently for preproduction is locking down all of these locations in tandem with all of our casts’ availability. Luckily, we have all summer to shoot our seven scenes, but there will be many inevitable obstacles that will lead up to that; however, our crew is determined to make everything work without a hitch! Subsequently, once production is complete, all seven segments will need to be edited in time for the showcase in October! Our summer is packed full!
