A bold new chapbook by poet and performer Nancy Charley
Who is Trickster?
According to poet, storyteller and performer Nancy Charley, he is
Sorcerer of shit, shape-shifter, who can become lion, whale, snake, bone-sifter, shadow-filler, master of taunt and tease, who dares persuade an angel wrong is right.
For journalist and cultural commentator Sophia Deboick, who has written an afterward for the book, Trickster 'is always with us . . . He is a literal conjurer but also a disrupter of social prejudices who makes the world anew. Trickster can be creative, even divine, in his chaos. Or he can be a destructive arch-derailer of humanity’s trajectory.'
A New Book
Hercules Editions, a London-based independent poetry press, is pleased to be able to bring this exciting new book to life. Nancy Charley's audacious poem is accompanied by specially-commissioned drawings from artist Alison Gill, which are inspired by children's Bibles, gaming culture and fairy tales. The images and poem together stress the sometimes dark, sometimes playful nature of this retelling of the Gospel story for modern times.
We invite you to be part of this exiting project!
We will be launching The Gospel of Trickster at Lumen in London on Monday 13th May, and at the Tom Thumb Theatre in Margate, Kent, on 15th June. At both events, Nancy will be performing the poem cycle in full, in a new staging she has created with the inspiration of theatre director Tamar Saphra.
Why your support is needed?
Independent poetry presses need the support of readers to keep going in these difficult times (and in these difficult times, we need poetry to make sense of the world). We are offering some exciting incentives to our backers, including an opportunity to have your name listed in the book (a regular feature of all our publications; a way of making our readers integral to the project), a chance to receive a limited-edition print of a new poem by Nancy not included in the book, and also a signed and numbered hand-tinted offset print by Trickster artist Alison Gill. And for our most generous backers, poet Nancy Charley will offer you and your friends a personal performance of Trickster!
Risks and challenges
This is the seventh year our press has been running, with the aid of ACE and partner organisations such as the Poetry Society, the London Review Bookshop, the Cinema Museum, the Poetry School an others. We have built up a list of fans and supporters, and we hope we will be able to either welcome you back or add you as one of our friends.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
