From director Gorman Bechard, whose latest film COLOR ME OBSESSED, A FILM ABOUT THE REPLACEMENTS, was just named one of the year's seven best music documentaries by Rolling Stone, comes...PIZZA, A LOVE STORY, the first real look at the phenomenon that is Sally’s, Pepe’s, and Modern.
Anyone who’s ever sampled a pie from one of these New Haven brick oven pizza palaces, knows that they’ve just tasted the finest pizza known to mankind. One bite and you become obsessed. It’s like seeing God, only tastier. There is no going back.
(Really, talk to anyone who’s been blessed with taste…New Haven is not famous for Yale, we’re famous for pizza...we're not polarized by politics or religion, we're polarized by who serves the best pie.)
This feature-length documentary will examine that why…
Bechard, long-time New Haven resident, and self-proclaimed pizza snob, will take us one a journey which began in 1924, and the pie that would change the world. We will talk to the families, the workers, and especially the fans (both the famous and unknown) who’ll wait in line for hours for a taste. We’ll present a history of what IS the greatest pizza in the world.
We just began shooting, and have already filmed an exclusive and very rare interview with Flora Consiglio, wive of Salvatore, the man who opened Sally's in 1938. Flo still runs the restaurant from her booth way up in front. The interview is funny and touching and explains a number of Sally's myths including the legendary "magic phone number."
We are going to feature owners from all three establishments, both the famous and not-so-famous fans "discussing" who makes the best pie, as well as a detailed history of how the New Haven taste evolved.
We’ve got a great cinematographer in Adrian Correia, and an amazing production team (including local music legend Dean Falcone and co-producer/Researcher Katherine Dickey) putting together everything we need. Check out Adrian's reel: http://www.AdrianCorreia.com
But despite everyone working for no pay, we still need some cash for things like tapes, expendables, film festival submission fees, a sound mix, and a couple of big hard drives to hold all the digital footage…we've kept the goal low, but the more we get, the more we can spend on the above items.
Which is why we are we here on KickStarter.
What makes PIZZA, A LOVE STORY special? Well, for starters, we know how to make features on micro budgets. We have a proven track record. (We are not kids just out of film school talking about making a feature. This is what we do.) This is NOT a waste of your money. The film WILL get made, it WILL play film festivals, and you WILL receive your backer prize. (Ask people who backed Color Me Obsessed! Check out the Facebook page for that film.)
Just check the official websites for our last THREE features, COLOR ME OBSESSED (www.ColorMeObsessed.com), YOU ARE ALONE (www.YouAreAlone.com) and FRIENDS (WITH BENEFITS) (www.FWBmovie.com), see the list of awards, read the IMDB reviews for all three films.
