About this project

Magbot is a mix of classic platforming and modern physics.  Magbot is releasing on PC (Windows / Mac / Linux).  Magbot is a metroidvania style puzzle game with a focus on exploration rather than combat.  The challenges come from overcoming a hostile environment and occasionally running into its powerful inhabitants.

Magbot features magnetic and gravity abilities to collect and use for environmental manipulation and exploration.  The flashlight allows you to navigate dark corridors and also scan certain objects.

Magbot's magnetic abilities are Attract (pull metal objects closer) and Repulse (push metal objects away).  Small blue MagPoints mounted on the walls of the ship allow you to use Attract and Repulse to pull or push yourself to areas you can't jump to.

As you progress in the game you gain more abilities such as Kinetic Blast, Jump Booster, Gravity Tether, and Gravity Bubble.  Each ability unlocks new areas of the ship to explore and are needed to defeat powerful enemies.

Magbot is primarily designed to be played with a mouse & keyboard.  It also supports playing via a Game Pad. Microsoft Xbox 360 gamepad is fully supported and the Sony Dual Shock controller is (experimentally) supported via motioninjoy.  Magbot has fully remappable keyboard and gamepad buttons and switching between keyboard / mouse and gamepad is completely on-the-fly as the on-screen button prompts change as you switch controls.

This game is not just a concept, not just an idea.  It's not a tiny alpha.  All of the core gameplay and support systems are done and right now the push is content creation.

 Magbot has multiple game modes designed to add replayability and challenges for those who want to push themselves to the limit!  The regular game contains a dynamic difficulty system (can be turned off in the options).  Time Attack mode adds an on screen timer that shows the elapsed play time.  For an added challenge, try IronBot mode in which you can only save at repair stations and if you die your savegame is deleted!  If that's not enough, for the ultimate challenge, try Marathon IronBot in which there is no saving and you must finish the game without dying in a single sitting! 

A demo is available right now from itch.io, it contains the first 4 areas of the ship and the first boss battle.

I have been making Magbot for the last six months and while I can make the game and the art, I'm not a musician.  I want to have an original soundtrack (OST) created for the game.  It would include a minimum of six tracks:

  • Intro / Title Screen
  • Level Music 1
  • Level Music 2
  • Boss Fight 1
  • Boss Fight 2
  • Credits

I have enlisted the help of Benjamin Burnes of Abstraction Music whose video game credits include The Maker's Eden, The UnEarth Initiative, and LessMilk's "Game a week challenge".

All reward tiers include the bonuses from the previous reward tier.

THE GAME - A DRM free copy of Magbot redeemable on itch.io and hopefully Steam if the greenlight campaign succeeds.

THE GAME & OST - A copy of Magbot and a digital copy of the Soundtrack.

THE COLONIST - A copy of Magbot and a digital copy of the Soundtrack plus YOUR NAME (or a made up one) on one of the Cryo Pods.  

THE DIARY - A copy of Magbot and a digital copy of the Soundtrack plus a tweet sized paragraph written by you in the game as a colonist's diary entry.   

THE ROBOT - A copy of Magbot and a digital copy of the Soundtrack plus a custom robot of your design is added to the game.

$3200 - Two more songs are added to the OST and Magbot's sound effects are upgraded.

$4400 - Another two more songs are added to the OST and the environmental sound effects are upgraded.

Is that it? - Yes.  There's no "new area" stretch goal, or "new ability" stretch goal because I'm giving you 100% of the vision right here and now.  Plus I'm still only a one man team, so adding anything like that just pushes the release date farther down the road.  And that sucks.

I am aiming for an October 2016 release.  That will provide ample time to get the music made and finish the game.  

When Magbot gets through Steam Greenlight everyone who backed at THE GAME level or higher gets a Steam Key.

By day I'm a Systems Administrator. By night I am an indie game developer. I'm a 30-something guy with a loving wife and 3 cute kids located in St. John's, Newfoundland, Canada. I have been interested in game development ever since my childhood and I have two games currently available for sale, a line drawing puzzle game called Spell Casting 101 and a top down shoot-em-up called Starfighter: Research and Development.

I've backed a good many Kickstarter and I've seen what it takes to get a project from a dream to a reality.  I've also seen a lot of kickstarters fail miserably and that's why I've waited until I have a solid chunk of the work done before bringing this project to you. 

All rewards that include user submitted in-game content (like Colonist Names, Diary Entries, Custom Robots) must be approved.  We reserve the right to decline any entry (and ask for a new submission) that we feel doesn't fit within the Magbot universe for any reason.

Risks and challenges

The core of Magbot is complete. Right now the focus is on content creation. A successful kickstarter means we can add fantastic and unique music and effects to the game.

All of the main abilities are done and work in-game.

If the kickstarter fails, we will continue to make the game but will use pre-existing royalty free music and effects.
