Idea was born
Since I was a small boy I wanted to go to space, but since I am unlikely to do so I at least wanted to reach as high as I could. So I came up with the idea to launch a weather balloon.
Planning and research
I got together with another friend from my school. We are upper sixth form students from Hamburg, Germany, specialized in physics.
After detailed research, we are convinced that it is definitely possible to achieve. We have already planned everything as far as we could without the assets.
Summing up, we will launch the weather balloon with a smartphone in a heated box up to the sky. On the way up the smartphone will collect pressure data and take many pictures. At a certain point, the balloon will burst because of the expansion in the less dense atmosphere. Now the box will begin its journey back to the ground slowed down by a small parachute. On the last kilometers the phone will reconnect to the mobile network and frequently send SMS with location data to our own cellphones. Then we can find the box with our equipment using that position data. The position can be anywhere between 50 and 150 kilometers from our launch site, but there are some tools to predict the approximate flight path to avoid bad landing locations like the Baltic Sea. The odds that we land on solid ground are pretty good:

To really make this project happen we need your help! The expenses to launch your own weather balloon mainly depend on the helium and the balloon itself. We will participate in the funding ourselves with an amount of 100 €, but we still will need external funding.
minimum 150€ -- essential assets
optimum 220€ -- optional extra camera for way better pictures
With even more funding we would reach higher altitudes with a bigger balloon. Our travel expenses to the landing site could be covered or we could get some more sensors for temperature. We could establish redundant systems to create a extra layer of security in case of a system failure.
We hope to bring this project to life with your help!
Risks and challenges
Please be aware of the possibility of a failure. Even with scrupulous planning, there might be eventualities we couldn't foresee. The circumstances our heated sensor box will have to face are extreme ( -60°C). We will try our best to avoid any system failure, but even the slightest mistake can make it fail.
You always have to face those risks if you enter extreme environments.
In case of a failure, we might not be able to deliver all rewards. Of course we would try to offer you alternatives (like e. g. the source code of our application which will definitely be available).
From similar projects that were launched earlier by others, we hope to have learned enough about possible mistakes to avoid a failure.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
