The NoVA C Pen: A Push Pen for the Pilot Hi-Tec-C
A Push Pen for the Hi-Tec-C cartridges. Well-built using high grade materials. Slick and ergonomic design with a great cam mechanism.
At Googa we use the Pilot Hi-Tec-C pens all the time. We think it is probably the best pen cartridge to write with. We guess that most of you use or used it before and have loved it as well. If you didn't then you should treat yourself to one and see what all the fuss is about.
We also LOVE push pens, well known as Clicky pens. Some time ago we thought that we should combine the two and make a clicky pen that can use the Pilot Hi-Tec-C ink cartridge. So we took our best designer (Tyson the dog) and put him to work. We came up with several prototypes and after some testing chose the one we think is the best. This design is very comfortable to write with, has great weight distribution and we love its looks (we hope you guys will also love it).
There are two things we don't like about the Pilot Hi-Tec-C pens:
1. The cheap, disposable plastic housing.
2. It is NOT a push pen (Clicky Pen).
The NoVA C
The NoVA C solves these two issues. It is the first clicky pen designed especially for the Pilot Hi-Tec-C ink cartridge. Its body and all internal parts are made out of 6061 Aluminum and the body is Anodize coated. All other parts like the tip, clip and spring are made of stainless steel and are electro polished to give them extra shine. The cam mechanism is a German mechanism made out of steel and coated with nickel. Basically, this pen is made to last, using high quality materials it will last a life time (probably more than one).
The pen is designed to be slick, nice to hold in your hand and great to write with. Its high quality metal cam mechanism produces a unique sound unlike any other pen. The NoVA C Click is very solid and nice to hold. Its weight is fine-tuned not to be too heavy, so it will tire you down, but heavy enough so it will feel good in your hand. Now, we know that it is a fine line to cross if you don't want to be too light or too heavy – but we think we did the job rather well.
To replace the ink cartridge you just need to screw off the top (the cam mechanism), take out the old cartridge, put in the new one, screw the top back on and you are ready to go.
Each NoVA C comes with a stainless steel ring (we call it the "top ring") and a stainless steel clip. We know that some of you, like their pens to have a clip and some prefer them without – so we are giving you both options. If you like your pen to have a clip you just put the clip between the cam mechanism and the body. If you like your pen without a clip, you just put the top ring between the cam mechanism and the body. Both are made out of stainless steel and are built to last. It is important to have one of them between the steel cam mechanism and the aluminum body so the protect the body from scratches.
The NoVA C is available in black anodize finish or natural (bare aluminum), it is also available in red, blue and silver anodize finish for an extra charge. You can check all this in our pledges.
NoVA C Click Specs:
Length: 5.6" = 142 mm
Diameter: 4.8" = 12.2 mm (Widest diameter of the pen)
Weight: 1oz = 28 gr
Now, for the most important thing about this project – you guys, our backers. We need your support so we can make the NoVA C. We need to get a lot of pre-orders so we can cover the cost of tooling and make a large batch manufacturing order. Once we get enough of you onboard we can manufacture the pen and put it in the best place possible – your hands.
Thank you all

Risks and challenges
All the products we design, including the NoVA C, are always designed up to the last detail before we put them up for sale. Although the NoVA C looks like a simple product, it's "only" a pen, it is actually a complex one. Only the cam mechanism is an "of the shelf" part. All the other parts from the body to the spring are made especially for the NoVA C. Because of this, we made several prototypes for the NoVA C and only after having a pen that preforms seamlessly, we have brought it here to all of you. The process of developing a product to its final form is relatively long and expensive but it holds a very important advantage: what you see is what you get and we don’t have any more developing to do.
In spite of the above, we still have a few challenges. The first and main challenge is a logistic one. For making each NoVA C pen, we work with five different suppliers and manufacturers:
1. Metal working factory to make the body, tip and sliding mechanism.
2. Spring manufacturing factory to make the spring and clip.
3. Surface treatment factory for anodizing and electro-polishing.
4. Cam mechanism manufacturer.
5. Pilot Hi-Tec-C ink cartridge supplier.
The same suppliers we worked with to make our prototypes are the ones we are going to work with now because we know that they do a great job. However, working with so many suppliers may cause delays. A delay in the manufacturing process might result in a delay in the delivery date. Due to the work we did on the prototypes, the only risk might be the delivery date. In order to tackle this challenge, we've added extra time to the expected delivery date promised by our suppliers as a failsafe.
Another challenge we face is assembling a large quantity of pens. To tackle this challenge we've designed special tools to make the assembling fast, easy and accurate.
Hopefully, all the work will go like clock-work and every part will be delivered on time to our studio and onwards to your hands.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
