Goodspeed Watches began with the idea of creating affordable chronographs inspired from the golden age of motorsports when driving was still an analog process. Our newest project, the Sonoma, is named after the famed racecourse from my home state of California. The Sonoma combines vintage aesthetics with modern performance at a price that suits any budget. Quantities are limited to 400 Mechanical and 400 Quartz.
****If you want to order a bracelet with your watch, just add $45 to your watch amount. For some reason, Kickstarter wont allow you to back two different items. If you want to just order a bracelet, select the bracelet option for $45. If you have any questions, email me at email@example.com****
Unboxing review of the PVD with Black Bezel by Watches Galore:
We were able to capture the aesthetics of vintage watches with a case shape that rarely gets used today, called a tonneau case. Made from 316L stainless steel, the front of the case is finished in what's called a sunray brushing so named because the brush pattern radiates out from the center like the sun's rays. The sides of the case are polished which adds a nice contrast to the brushed stainless steel front.
The uncluttered dial, with two sub-registers, makes telling the time and counting the seconds easy no matter how fast you're traveling. This watch purely captures the aesthetics found in vintage watches from the 1960s and 70s but with a modern twist and the addition of high-end modern components. Additionally, we combined style elements from both motorsport racing watches as well as dive style watches to create what we call Diver/Driver style.
The dial was kept to the bare minimum to enhance readability with vintage styled lume as the hour markers. The subdials are enhanced with concentric circular grooves engraved into the watch face; because details matter.
As the photo above shows, the large red second hand is for measuring the chronograph seconds. The left subdial measures the time of day seconds and the right subdial measures the chronograph minutes.
The Goodspeed Sonoma is being offered in two movement choices: mechanical or quartz. Why are we offering two movements? Some watch owners appreciate a mechanical movement for its history and craftsmanship. And others want the best value they can get and will opt for the quartz movement.
- Mechanical: Seagull ST-1901 mechanical movement (hand wind) with Sapphire crystal
- Quartz: Miyota 6S21 quartz movement with mineral crystal
Every thing else about the two versions is identical: case size, dial, watchband, packaging, etc. The only way to distinguish what movement is inside is to look on the case back as the movement type is engraved on the screw down case back.
MOVEMENT CHOICES (in greater depth)
Mechanical - Seagull 1901:
This mechanical (hand-wound) chronograph movement has a very rich history. In short, back in the 1960s there were three major watch movement makers: Valjoux, Lemania, and Venus. A Chinese company purchased all of the machinery from Venus to begin making the Venus caliber 175 in China rather than having to import the movements from Switzerland. Today, more and more watchmakers are using the Seagull movement because it is an extremely accurate and durable mechanical movement with a great history based in Swiss watchmaking. The movement will run 45 hours before needing to be re-wound.
Additionally, the mechanical version is outfitted with a sapphire crystal which is nearly impervious to scratches. In fact, sapphire crystals, have a MOHS rating of 9 making it the third hardest material on Earth. As a result of this hardness, manufacturing watches with a Sapphire crystal increases the cost considerably as special machines are required for cutting and shaping it.
Quartz - Miyota 6S21
A Japanese quartz movement with smooth chronograph hand from a well trusted Japanese company: Miyota. The beauty of a quartz movement is that it's always accurate whether it lives on your wrist or somewhere in your watch rotation and it's also more affordable. So you still get a well made vintage inspired watch at a great price. FYI - the battery will last 2-3 years before needing replacement.
We've partnered with one of the best watch manufacturers in the world, and they've done an amazing job at taking our design and technical drawings and making the Sonoma. Below you can see the iterative process of making design modifications to create the final watch you see here. First we worked with our designer to document the initial concept on paper. Next, we transformed the artistic drawings into a series of CAD drawings to lay out all of the crucial measurements. Then, initial samples were created that took those CAD drawings and made them a reality.
Whether you choose mechanical or quartz movement the watch is offered in the following four colorways as shown below:
- Stainless Steel with black bezel,
- Stainless Steel with "Pepsi" bezel,
- Black PVD coated stainless with black bezel,
- Black PVD coated stainless with "Pepsi" bezel
Every Sonoma will come on an Italian leather perforated racing watch band (as has been shown above). But we are also offering a matching stainless steel bracelet with straight end links for an additional $45. The outer links of the bracelet are brushed with the center solid "beads of rice" links polished. The bracelet is offered in both Stainless and Black PVD finish. The bracelet is the perfect addition to complement your Goodspeed Sonoma (yes, you'll still receive the leather bracelet.)
If you want a bracelet and a watch simply add on an additional $45 to your pledge for each bracelet you'd like to purchase. If you just want to order a stainless bracelet select the bracelet option.
At the very end of the Kickstarter campaign, once it's fully funded, we'll email a survey and you'll let us know which colorway you want. For now, you just choose the mechanical or quartz version and the number of watches you want to purchase. As well as if you want to add on a stainless bracelet.

Risks and challenges
We were very careful when it came to selecting our production partners. Additionally, we went through many samples before making the final selections. In manufacturing, there can potentially be delays. If we experience these delays, we will keep all of our backers informed and updated in every step of the way.
