Knight's Crest Games is proud to announce the creation of a fun, fast-paced, and strategic card game that we are sure will bring hours of enjoyment to your home. Shogun Showdown is a trick taking game that puts a whole new spin on the genre with a dexterity element. In between rounds of card play (similar to Rook or Euchre), players take turns flicking cards at the winner's temple. Points are awarded on both card play and card flicking.
By adding card throwing into the mix, Shogun Showdown is a nice break from conventional games that have you sitting for long periods of time.
In Shogun Showdown, players take turns playing cards. Once all cards are played, the player who holds the most temple cards becomes the defending shogun and earns 1 point. The defending Shogun places their temple at the end of the table and that's when the real fun begins. All players throw their shuriken cards at the temple trying to knock it over. If the temple survives, the defender gets another point. If an attacking shogun knocks it down then they get a point. The first player to 4 points wins!
- 36 Playing Cards (Clay Coated Heavy 269 gsm)
- 1 Card Stand
- 2 White Clips
- 1 Four Page, Full Color Rule Booklet
In this game every card is used for both card play and card throwing elements.
We have a new artist that is updating the vector based artwork (used in the prototypes) to the more traditional Sumi-E art style. Our artist Mariusz Szmerdt has graciously provided a few samples that will be incorporated into the game as the Kickstarter progresses. I will be using updates to share this new artwork with each of you as they come in. The new art is shown above. This is the first of several art pieces being made for Shogun Showdown.
The beauty of this game is in the minimalist design and mechanics. This is offset by a catchy theme and unique game play elements including card flicking, temple card scoring system, and subtle strategy.
Here are just a few images of the artwork. The cards seen in the reviews above give an understanding of the finished product while the images below show the detail of the artwork.
The 3 primary card types are pictured below (white backgrounds)-from left to right: Shuriken (Throwing Star), Samurai, and Temple.
There are 3 different colors of Samurai (Suits): Black, Red, and White. There are 3 different strengths: one, two, or three-as shown below.
Some actual photos are shown below. Enjoy!
"It is a flat out fun and engaging card game!" - Lance Myxter, Undead Viking
Shogun Showdown has been reviewed by All Us Geeks and its creator, Sean Howard of Knight's Crest Games, was interviewed by Jeff King of All Us Geeks.
"I like the card throwing aspect of it. It's not really my thing, but it ended up being an amazing part of the game. Kids will love it!" - Megan, All Us Geeks
All Us Geeks Interview:
"It's good family fun that brings together elements of Tricking Taking, Dexterity, and Hand Management!" - Dave, To the Table Reviews
The chart below shows the rewards at each level of support.
Supporters that receive the bonus Ninja card (and other stretch goal cards) will have this card shipped with the full game. The Ninja card has a unique ability that is shared with no other card in the deck and adds a nice twist to the game.
In addition to backing at a given level, additional funds may be added to a backing level to include an add-on. A survey will be sent after the campaign to determine rewards.
The above die is an add-on to be used for the 'Kumamoto' rule set. Instead of having a basic D12. When attacking a single temple, the 1 Sword means success. When attacking a double temple, the 1 and 2 sword means success. When attacking a triple temple, the 1, 2, or 3 sword means success.
There are several special cards that will be unveiled as we meet stretch goals in the campaign. Some stretch goals will be rule variants, special cards, and component quality upgrades. Stretch goals are subject to change. Stretch goals will be included for backers at $20 (ninja) and above.
A successful Kickstarter campaign will mean Shogun Showdown will be produced in a large run, and that will result in greater quality at a reduced price. Your input and feedback as a backer will affect the final product. This is the exciting part for us. We have some additional cards we want to produce and are nearly complete. We will leave part of the defining aspects of these cards up to the backers. We will create a few options and allow you as a backer to vote on the card effects / art that you like the most. This makes Shogun Showdown a team project and allows your feedback and ideas to impact the game itself.
Knights Crest Games has many more games nearly designed that we would like to share with you. A successful Kickstarter campaign means that we can come back and continue to offer you great game titles at reduced cost and better quality. Art, prototypes, playtesting, and promotion all cost money and your backing of Shogun Showdown will secure future offerings from Knights Crest Games.
Risks and challenges
The biggest challenge we expect to face is spreading the word about this game. This is the first game Knights Crest Games is pushing into official publication. That is where we need your help. Please text, tweet, facebook post if this game has you interested. The more people who are able to back this game, the more stretch goals we can offer.
Our goal is to make a quality product and we understand the challenges of doing so. Our focus is to stay engaged with both our manufacturers and backers to keep everyone on the same page and informed. An informed backer is a happy backer.
If challenges arise, we will hit them head on. Sometimes an issue can cause a delay, and while delays are typically avoided, producing the the best product is always our end goal. Again, open communication with our backers is key.
All fulfillment will be done in house via the use of USPS. We have our quotes from manufacturers in hand and all artwork outside of possible stretch rewards is complete.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
