Pick the right club, every time
Once you have played a couple rounds with GOLF TAGS, the app will be able make club suggestions for you using our sophisticated club recommendations algorithm. Club recommendations is under development now and will be complete in time for fulfillment.
See shot dispersion for every club. This includes both driving and approach shots. Know where you tend to miss and what part of the game you need to work on.
Works beautifully with smartwatches
GOLF TAGS are fully compatible with most popular smartwatches, including Android Wear, Pebble, Samsung Gear and Magellan Echo. See club confirmation and last shot’s distance whenever you scan a tag with your phone. And your watch works as a golf GPS the rest of the time.
Conforms to tournament rules
Playing in a tournament? Great! You can still track your game with GOLF TAGS. Just use the Golf Pad Tournament Edition app (coming soon). The app will conform to tournament play rules when local Rule permitting distance measuring devices is in effect (see USGA Decision 14-3/0.5). You will not see shot distances and club recommendations while playing, but full game analysis will be available after you finish the round.
You can switch between the regular Golf Pad app and the Tournament Edition at any time.
Course strategy insights
Golf Pad shows your drives and approach shots on the map. Pars or better are shown in white, while bogeys or worse are shown in red. This way you can see what strategy works the best for you. You can also compare the performance and outcomes of using different clubs on the tee. In the end, you can make better decisions based on the real data from your own rounds.
Quick and easy setup
When you scan a tag with your phone for the first time, Golf Pad prompts you to select the club. Club pairings are saved under your account, so that you never need to repeat that step again.
Stretch goal - GOLF TAGS in BLACK
We are excited to announce that GOLF TAGS will be available in STEALTH BLACK if we can reach $50,000 in funding! Please rally your friends, shout out on social networks and let's make this happen!
There is no separate reward for the black version. If the goal is met, all backers will have the option to select their preferred color at the end of the project. Note, the black version will ship 2-3 weeks later than the blue one.
How does it work?
GOLF TAGS rely on Near Field Communication (NFC) technology. Each tag has a small, unique radio token inside. When you tap the tag to the phone, it records current location and club choice. Since it knows where each shot started and ended, it can compute every shot’s distance and statistics. You can see, edit and share the results in real time, right on your phone.
The tags inside are passive radios, so you never need to replace or recharge the batteries.
System requirements and technical details
GOLF TAGS work on phones running Android 4.0 or higher equipped with NFC radio. Most modern phones have one, see the complete list here.
NFC radio is only active while the phone screen is on. So Golf Pad introduced the innovative 'SmartLock' mode. It keeps the screen on, reduces brightness to save energy, and blocks on-screen controls to prevent accidental inputs. More information about using SmartLock during the round is available here.
Continuous GPS and NFC usage increase battery drain. Most users can finish a 4 hour round with 25-50% of battery left. If you have an older phone or tend to run out of juice before the end of the day, we recommend turning off account sync and Wi-Fi while playing. And if you plan to play two rounds on the same day, be sure to bring a portable charger - you can get one under $20 on Amazon.
iPhone user? Unfortunately Golf Tags are only compatible with Android at this time. While iPhone 6 has NFC radio built-in, it is currently restricted to Apple Pay. The good news is you can still use the Golf Pad app on iPhone as a rangefinder and scorecard. We hope to be able to make Golf Tags available for the iPhone in the future.
Our team and story
We were one of the pioneers of tee-to-green shot tracking. Our users loved the insights that gave them, but said it takes a lot of work to track every shot by pulling out and unlocking the phone. That's how we came up with GOLF TAGS.
We announced GOLF TAGS at the PGA Merchandise Show in Orlando, built the initial batch and used it to validate the design and functionality. We received tons of user feedback that helped us further improve the product. The first batch is almost sold out.
Now we need your help to build the next iteration of the hardware and expand the software. The tags design is getting improved with slicker profile and extended holding surface. Packaging is greatly improved too. The money we raise on Kickstarter will be used to fund the new injection molds, scale the production, build the new packaging, and add more game analysis features within the app and on the web.
Risks and challenges
Golf Tags are nearly complete. We've had a chance to validate the product in various environments, on multiple Android devices, and in different countries.
Supply Chain Risk
We partnered with CMF Industries, a well-established manufacturing company headquartered in Washington state to manage manufacturing and supply. CMF has over 25 years of experience manufacturing parts and products of various complexity, both domestically and in China. We expect a smooth ride. However, component delays and unexpected shortages can occur. If this happens, we’ll be sure to keep you informed and work to quickly solve the problem.
Some of the features listed above are currently under development. This includes the intelligent club recommendations and the Tournament Edition of the Golf Pad app. We have many years of software expertise and we believe the features are on track for June delivery. However, unexpected delays may occur. If this happens we will communicate our progress and work on adding the features as quickly as possible while maintaining high quality.
