Tails of Valor and Terror
Horror and Adventure in the World of Cathulhu
From The Cats of Ulthar to those owned by Delapore in The Rats in the Walls, cats have held a special place of honor in the heart of H.P. Lovecraft. They are deeply embedded into the lore of the Cthulhu Mythos. We hope you’ll join us on our journey into the world of Cathulhu, cats battling mythos horrors. Cathulhu – Velvet Paws on Cthulhu’s Trail is a horror role playing game by Sixtystone Press, an offshoot of the Call of Cthulhu RPG where the players portray cats investigating the Cthulhu Mythos.
The Tails of Valor and Terror Kickstarter will produce two books exploring this universe.
Book One is...
Tails of Valor will be the first collection of scenarios produced for Cathulhu (presented using the 7th edition rule system), a compilation of three adventures set in ancient times by Ennie Award winning authors. They are:
Triumphus Felis Ferae (set in 41 A.D. Rome), by Jeffrey Moeller – First the vermin became scarces, and then kittens and cats began wandering off, never to be seen again. Later, people began acting strangely by, disobeying the Praetorian Guards attempting and attempting to enter the Imperial Palace. Then the Emperor Gaius Julius Caesar Augustus Germanicus (known to later history as Caligula) himself vanishes from within the imperial residence, leaving the city teetering on the edge of utter chaos. Can a band of brave and proud Roman street cats solve this mystery, and restore order to the Empire?
Triumphus Felis Ferae is Latin for "the triumph (all march) of the wild cat" or more simply, Stray Cat Strut.
Shadow Harvest (set in 5th Dynasty Egypt), by Stuart Boon – As harvest fast approaches, strange things are happening in the Temple of Bast outside of the city of Bubastis. Two of the oldest and wises cats have disappeared and a kitten has been found murdered on temple grounds. Can a group of heroic and cunning cats of the temple discover what has befallen their kin, and uncover the dark secrets and blasphemous horrors that threaten all of Egypt?
The Undesirables (set in Dark Ages France) by Oscar Rios – The cats of Paris struggle to survive in a city driven mad with fear. The streets are filled with the dead, dying, and the terrified as a deadly and mysterious plague runs rampant. The church places the blame on Satan, black magic, witches, and their familiars… namely cats. As a purge of such undesirables begins will the PC's (player cats) strike out against the true threat by putting a stop to the actual witches spreading this vile pestilence, or seek to escape the chaos and reach the countryside?
The Council of Kingsport - The collection closes with a group of nine very important NPC's, for use in your regular 1920's Call of Cthulhu, Dreamlands, or Cathuhu campaign. The Council of Kingsport are a body of nine cats, which are living their ninth life, and revered for their wisdom, bravery, and leadership. These cats are defenders of the city of Kingsport, both in the Waking World and in the Dreamlands. Each detailed feline will include a photograph from a backer's actual cat! See the Backer Level description Council of Kingsport for more details.
Covers and interior Art by David Lee Ingersoll.
IMPORTANT - You must own CATHULHU - Velvet Paws on Cthulhu's Trail from Sixty Stone Press to run these adventures. It is available now on DrivethruRPG.com
Book Two is...
Tails of Terror is a collection of thirteen cat themed horror short stories. They include stories about cat heroes, cat villains, ghost and demon cats, feline Dreamlands adventurers, cat people, and cat-centric stories inspired by such H.P. Lovecraft classics as "The Rats in the Walls" and "The Dreams in the Witch House".
The stories are...
Brown Jenkin’s Reckoning by Edward M. Erdelac - The cats of Arkham gather to discuss the crisis threatening them all, the return of Brown Jenkin, familiar of the late witch Keziah Mason. A cunning alley cat proposes a daring mission to destroy the vile creature once and for all.
The Cat in the Pall by Pete Rawlik – In Lovecraft’s “The Rats in the Walls” the protagonist De La Poer confronts horrors lurking below his restored ancestral home of Exham Priory. This is not his story, but that of his nine cats who face these horrors in their own way.
Derpyfoot by Christine Morgan – For a tiny kitten with a deformed foot, life can be wondrous and magical, but also brutal and cruel. Born into a world of madness, hunger, and murder, this small survivor finds salvation and justice, thanks to their rather unusual and menacing sire.
Ghost Story by Brian M. Sammons – Ghost, an old gray cat, is the lord of his castle, master of all he surveys, and defender his kingdom, when he isn’t napping that is. When a sinister assassin threatens the life of his human, Ghost rises to the challenge.
Palest of Humans by Donn Webb – A retelling of the classic story “The Black Cat”, by Edgar Allen Poe, only this time the tale of human wretchedness and cruelty is retold from the perspective of the true hero of the piece, the cat.
Bats in the Belfry by William Meikle – Carnacki makes a call to check on the mental state of an area vicar. He soon finds himself facing supernatural horrors in the church’s bell tower with an unlikely and unexpected ally, an old ginger tomcat.
Satisfaction Brought Him Back by Glynn Barrass – When Tiberius the cat meets the soul of a dying feline; he investigates and discovers a foolish human dabbler in the unseen arts. This tinkerer just so happens to be his owner and has unwittingly summoned a malevolent darkness to the world.
The Bastet Society by Sam Stone – When Skye, a beautiful woman with an unusual bloodline, meets an intoxicating Egyptian man he leads her to the Bastet Society, a mysterious, alluring, but also dangerous ancient fellowship, she begins learning answers to questions she never knew she had. But at what price does this knowledge come?
The Veil of Dreams by Stephen Mark Rainey – In the remote reaches of Upper Michigan, fearsome beings from another universe suddenly appears to prey on unsuspecting humans. It’s up to a group of brave local felines to set out and stop this otherworldly threat originating from a realm of nightmares and horror.
The Quest of Pumpkin the Brave by Oscar Rios – A young girl with amnesia finds herself lost and alone in a strange and terrifying world, until she is found by a young but brave orange cat on a noble quest to bring her home.
A Field Guide to Wanderlust by Joseph S. Pulver, Sr. – Letting our curiosity look out the window, can lead to dark places and strange transformations. Just as cats are prone to wander, chaos is prone to crawl, and in the great wide wild, when the two meet, there’s magic and more than a little madness.
In the End there is a Drain by Tim Waggoner – Every town has an old woman who lives alone in a rundown house with lots and lots of cats. Sometimes the locals spread rumors that their cat lady is insane, or even a witch. One young boy learns that for his town, the truth is far worse.
Special Offer from Sixty Stone Press
All backers to this Kickstarter (above the Gazing out the Window) will receive a 25% off coupon from Sixty Stone Press usable towards the purchase of Cathulhu - Velvet Paws on Cthulhu's Trail.
Stretch Goal #1 - Extra Interior Art ($13,000) This stretch goal will allow us to have additional interior illustrations by David Lee Ingersoll in Tails of Valor. When unlocked each scenario in the book will have a to a total of four illustrations (as opposed to three) and possibly an additional map if necessary.
Stretch Goal #2 - Bonus Fiction Stories ($13, 750) We'll add two new short stories to Tails of Terror. These will be The Ruins of an Endless City by Lee Clark Zumpe, and A Glint in the Eyes by D.A. Madigan. This will raise the number of stories to a respectable fourteen!
The Ruins of an Endless City by Lee Clark Zumpe – Amidst the rubble of allied-occupied post-war Berlin, an American scholar and a weary veteran of an ancient conflict investigate a recent discovery. This revelation bears a striking resemblance to a creature of legend as dreams of a city veiled by shadow threaten humanity with horror and madness.
A Glint in the Eyes by D.A. Madigan – Known for their extraordinary perception, a cat named Samwise Gamgee notices that one of his human neighbors has been replaced by something dreadful and monstrous. Since the humans don't notice this trickery, he takes it upon himself to sort things out; it’s in his territory after all.
Stretch Goal #3 - Sinister Seeds ($14,000) - Jeff Moeller, Stuart Boon, and Oscar Rios will create three Sinister Seeds for Ancient Rome, Ancient Egypt and Dark Ages France. These will be short scenario overviews, with enough details about the plot for a Keeper to build a new adventure on. Each Sinister Seed will be about two paragraphs long, and added to the interior of Tails of Valor. These will allow players to continue playing the pre-generated investigators from the core book using these follow up plot lines in their home campaign.
Stretch Goal #4 - More Bonus Fiction Stories ($14,750) - The final two bonus short stories will be added to Tails of Terror, bringing the total number of stories to sixteen! These stories are as follows:
The Cats of the Rue d’Auseil by Neil Baker – In the city of Paris strains of a particular viol waft down from the top of a narrow apartment building as a local artist stumbles upon fantastic and terrifying truths, and encounters the mysterious feline guardians protecting our world from madness.
The Knowledge of the Lost Master by Andi Newton – Stuart Tavish spent a fortune tracking down the Zhang-Ti sutra, a lost manuscript containing untold knowledge. However, as he and his companions make their way through an abandoned monastery, guided by magical cat shaped statue, they learn the ancient sutra is far from unguarded.
Stretch Goal 5 - Title Page Art ($15,500) - Our illustrator, David Lee Ingersoll, will create sixteen (yes, you read that correct, SIXTEEN) quarter page illustrations for EACH short story in Tails of Terror. These will go on the title page of each story, and really make this book something extra special.
Stretch Goal 6 - Project Bookmarks ($16,000) - Each backer receiving a physical reward coming from The Goblin Lair will receive a special color, two sided book mark. One side will feature art from Tails of Valor, the other Tails of Terror. These are not included with the Cats from Saturn backer level, as those are for Print on Demand copies.
Stretch Goal 7 - Halloween Cats! ($16,250) - There is nothing better than reading a new horror book in October to celebrate the Halloween Season. Unlocking this stretch goal will expedite the editing and layout of Tails of Terror so that the PDF will be released BEFORE Halloween. Physical books won't be printed until later, so both books can be mailed out at the same time.
STRETCH GOAL 8 - BONUS SCENARIO #1 ($18,500) - A backer exclusive PDF, an original Cathulhu scenario, complete with pre-gens, by Oscar Rios.
Grey in the Dark (1920's / Kingsport) - In a city of cozy coffee houses, rolling hills, and picturesque seaside wharfs, a great evil grows in power. Kingsport, the City in the Mists, is under siege by a malevolent entity from beyond our world. Dozens of people have gone missing, yet when they vanish no one seems to notice or remember they existed at all. No one even realizes the danger or horror that has befallen Kingsport. No one that is, but the cats of Kingsport. They remember the missing people and sense the growing evil, so it's up to them to stop it!
STRETCH GOAL 9 - BONUS SCENARIO #2 ($20,750) - A backer exclusive PDF, an original Cathulhu scenario, complete with pre-gens, by Jeffrey Moeller.
One Anguish In A Crowd (1803 / Cuba) - Thousands of refugees, men, women and children, white, black or mixed race, mostly free people of color, flee together on any ship they can find from the violence of the Haitian Revolution. On arrival, they receive a rude awakening: there are no free people of color in Cuba, and anyone not white enough is imprisoned on the ships on which they arrive. As conditions deteriorate and families are torn apart, the cats of Havana are drawn by the echoes of nightmares. But so is something else.
