About

What is MathMark?

MathMark is a competitive scavenger hunt game for students to better their understanding of math and history. It allows students to learn these subjects along with a balance of cooperation and competition by exploring their surroundings. This app also shows students who don't understand the relevance of math, that math is all around us, even in the most well-known landmarks throughout the world.

Why are we doing it?

We, the GoBodies, are doing this app because every day we observe students who can’t grasp or just plainly don’t care about math. We researched about math proficiency in the U.S, and we found that we are ranked 34th in the world in math, based on the 2012 PISA study by the National Center for Education Statistics. We feel to be a relevant country in the future, we need to be in the top 5. Based on this research, we decided to improve learning by making math more engaging and prove its relevance.

Problems:

  1. Math can be non-engaging

  2. People don't understand the relevance of math around them

  3. People don’t understand that landmarks use math

  4. The United States is only 34th in the world in math

Solutions:

  1. Coopertition through exploration

  2. Solving questions that are based on the landmark

  3. We show that math is all around us

  4. MathMark makes math more engaging

Who will use it?

MathMark can be used by any student with access to a smart device in any grade, because the questions, explanations, and waypoints are entirely customizable by the teacher. The app is free for both the student and teacher version, so the only resource used up during the process is time! We will continue to fund the app through donations and sponsorships throughout our app.

MathMark’s Development:

We prototyped an app on an online software called Appery.io. This software writes the code for an app when you to drag and drop elements of the app onto a page. It continues to write the code as you format the elements and connect to them to other elements. For example, you can drop a button onto the page, change its text and appearance, and link it to another page. We used other sources such as Nishant Patel, Raj Shah, math proficiency reports, and maps of the OSU Oval.

Sharing our Solution:

In the beginning, we talked with Dr. Raj Shah, an expert in math and physics, who helped us discover problems in today’s society relating to math. We also talked with Nishant Patel, a programmer from California and the founder of Raw Engineering, about our project and he provided feedback on our app. He said that the app is a good prototype, but could use some work outside of Appery and possibly develop an actual app to be used by students on the App Store.

Prototype Screenshots:

The first screenshot is the first screen that comes up when you open either the Student or Teacher Editions. It shows the logo and allows you to either join, edit, or create a mission. Also you can look at the about page, where it talks about the GoBodies. If you contributed $5 or more to our campaign, this is where your name will be featured! The second screenshot is the first screen that will pop up when you start a mission. It tells you where to go and how to get there using Google Maps API. You can continue to the question anytime, but you won't be able to solve the problem without being at the location, because there might be certain items that you need to see o solve it.

The first screenshot in the image above is an example of a problem. Problems can either be chosen from our vast database of locations, or created by the teacher in the Teacher Edition. In this example, we used a real math example from Ohio State University's Thompson Library. There are three answers to choose from, and only one is correct. Each question can earn you up to 20 points. If you get it right the first time, you get the full 20 points. If you get it right the second time, you get 10 points. And, if you get it right after two wrong guesses, you get 0 points. Point values can be edited by the teacher. Once you get it right, screenshot 2 pops up saying that you are correct, and then it explains how to solve the problem.

Screenshots 1 and 2 are screens from the Teacher Edition. The first one is the screen where you can edit questions and answers. In Edit mode, Answer One is the right answer, but we will randomize where to put the answers on the screen. Screen 2 is the general mission edit screen where you can add questions, reorder questions, set geolocation points, and add point values.

Risks and challenges

With a great app comes great responsibility. Creating and maintaining an app is a long, tedious process. There is a lot of things we must account for, from research, design, development, to usability and more. There are always setbacks when developing technology, however, one of the risks we foresee is meeting our delivery date to the different app stores (March 2015). There’s also the approval process which means we might have to make a few changes before Apple/Google approves our app.

We will keep our backers up to date with our progress and let you know if we encounter any setbacks.
