Original screenplay, based on the epic poem 'Goblin Market' by Christina Rosetti. A lyrical film-noir following the relationship between two sisters: Laura, addictive and sensual, Lizzie, controlling and incorruptible, whose childhood play has evolved into a game of fantasy and entrapment that has divorced them from reality. The narrative delves into the power of myths to affect our lives, how the stories we build can become the walls to house us, or imprison us.
Combining elements of psychological horror with magical realism, a beautiful original score, handmade masks and wearable art and a contemporary dance fantasy sequence - this film project crosses the boundaries of art mediums to create a compelling piece of storytelling.
There are two distinctive visual styles running through the piece: All INTERIOR scenes and all EXTERIOR URBAN scenes are to be shot in a contemporary version of film noir. LIZZIE standing in the shadows on the stairwell… the polished tabletop adorned by a bowl of fruit in the dimly lit living room… LAURA running at night down the wet lamp-lit street…
All EXTERIOR NATURE scenes are to be shot in a more idealised and magical style - using backlight, sun and natural light to create a magical, larger-than-life idyllic effect.
This very visual film will require a director of photography with a lot of experience and artistry. We are also going to be collaborating with a wonderful violinist and composer named OSCAR WEST, who is creating an original score for the film. And we will be working with a contemporary dance company to create choreography for the fantasy scene with the goblins - performed by the dancers. We will also be creating original handmade masks and wearable art for the costumes of the goblins.
So there will be a tremendous amount of creative talent coming together to make this unusual film-noir a reality. Ultimately we want to harness all that creative passion to make a truly beautiful film.
Risks and challenges
Timing! We will be attempting to complete the shoot within only three months of being fully funded. Pulling together all the right elements to make a beautiful film in a short time will be a challenge, but with the right blend of determination, gratitude, focus, and the generous support of our backers, we will be able to do it!
We are utterly determined to make this film and to follow through into distribution - whatever happens and whatever challenges we face.
This short film is going to be our segue into a feature film production of an amazing original screenplay by Stephanie Sinclaire called THE SHADOWMASTER. This is also a film-noir, psychological drama with fairytale and satirical elements. So the completion of GOBLIN MARKET is vital to our long term goals and ambitions with this feature, which is why there is simply no option but to see it through!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
