6 unique notebooks inspired by the greatest architects of all time.
"An Idea is Salvation by Imagination" -Frank Lloyd Wright
From one of the most famous architects of all time this quote demonstrates Wright's belief in the eternal value of an idea. This ethos proved instrumental to his role as a revolutionary in American architecture at the turn of the 20th century. His radical ideas shaped what many generations consider a home and a workplace.
"Less is More" -Ludwig Mies van der Rohe
This famous quote from Ludwig Mies van der Rohe has done more to steer the direction of architecture than anyone first expected. It defined the mantra of an architect whose approach to design still echos throughout the world. A mantra of stern simplicity and loyalty to purpose; an approach many people viewed as cold but that nonetheless influenced an entire century.
"Less is a Bore" -Robert Venturi and Denise Brown
Responding to Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and his famous dictate that 'Less is more" Robert Venturi and Denise Brown pushed back by exclaiming "Less is a bore!". Venturi and Brown would go on to become poster children for postmodern architecture. They denounced modernism as too austere and formal; a philosophy not adept to variety.
GoArchitect created this notebook as an homage to a unique pair of architects who broke the mold and introduced some color into the world.
"I'm a Whore" -Philip Johnson
In a cheeky response to criticism surrounding his eclectic design approach, Philip Johnson remarked, "I am a whore . . . paid very well for high-rise buildings."
This seemingly humorous response actually carried a lot of weight as it pushed back against the strong "ism's" of architecture: modernism, postmodernism, classicism, and so on. It showed that Johnson didn't respect those self-imposed boundaries like most of his contemporaries did. He was willing to give the client what they wanted; at least what he thought they should have wanted.
"Architecture is Frozen Music" -Johann Wolfgang von Goethe
Widely recognized but rarely correctly attributed, "Architecture if Frozen Music" comes from 18th Century author Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. No other quote in architecture so succinctly captures its potential for beauty.
"Even a Brick Wants to be Something" -Louis Kahn
Louis Kahn's approach to architecture emphasized the honest treatment of materials with their inherent qualities and beauty. Why try to force a brick to be something other than a brick? He argued that is has an honorable status and should be respected.
Kahn's career is evidence to his philosophy around and mastery of the seemingly humble brick. You only have to look at the National Assembly Building in Dhaka to see this. This notebook from GoArchitect honors his legacy by encouraging designers of today to respect the materials they use.
