About

JUST ADDED!

Thanks to volunteers we will be able to do Crash Course episodes of ETU, Deadlands, Rippers, and Savage Rifts if we hit our minimum goal in addition to our core episodes.

Not everyone learns easiest by reading and currently the only tutorial videos for Savage Worlds are long and broad. New and perspective players tend to feel overwhelmed by an hour long video and those looking to just brush up on a single mechanic don't want to sit through an entire explanation of the system in hopes of a video covering what they need.  Games like Dungeons & Dragons have seen growth by leaps and bounds thanks to embracing multiple forms of education will well produced, highly polished, and easily digestible online educational content. Savage Worlds for Beginners aims to do the same and will be a 15 episode series designed both for new players and those looking to brush up on less used rules.  Each episode will only be 10-15 minutes and cover a very specific portion of the rules such as chases or social conflicts.  Backers to our Kickstarter will get access to exclusive items as well as the ability to purchase the entire season for download to view online, offline, or even share with curious gamers.  Together we hope to help the Savage Worlds community grow even larger and bring even more new players and GMs into the fold while also providing a useful tool for those that might need to brush up from time to time.

Learn Savage Worlds, One Video at a Time

If you're new to the Savage Worlds game system, or just looking to brush up on a few rules, this is the Kickstarter for you! Our goal is to produce a 15 episode series of 10-15 minute episodes, each dedicated to a different aspect of learning the Savage Worlds sysyem. The thing is, proper production isn't cheap, and if we want something worth sharing all over the community to get even more people interested in playing, we need to have the professional polish the gaming community has come to expect!

You might be wondering, "I have the book, why do I need videos to learn anything?"

It's true, that's one way to learn a system, but not everyone learns best that way. Plus, you might just need a refresher on how chases work, or have a friend that wants to try out the game before investing the time and money on a book. Short videos have been proven to be a great tool for not only teaching the rules, but also spreading the popularity of a game.

Tabletop RPGs have a long history of being taught to new players by one experienced player, or the GM. The thing is…the biggest obstacle to growth of the hobby is a prospect player not having a friend that already knows the game. The hurdles to learn a game on your own are often just too much to handle. The explosion of already popular games such as Dungeons & Dragons owe a lot to the online communities that make easily accessible videos that teach only what a new player might need at any given time. This project aims to provide that same experience for Savage Worlds players, which currently is severely lacking.

Now that you know why making tutorial videos is important, you're probably wondering who we are and why WE should be the ones to do it.

If you are not familiar with our work, we are the people behind the YouTube channel known as The GM Table. In addition to making podcasts dedicated to Savage Worlds (such as SWADEcast), we also have been the first to break major news for the system, like when the writer of Savage Worlds, Shane Hensley, gave us an exclusive interview detailing many of  the products coming in the next year.  Our channel is already a trusted authority within the Savage Worlds community, with working relationships with many Savage publishers

We also have done this before, with great success. When The GM Table first premiered, we had a show titled “Let's Run Savage Worlds”, which became the primary source for many new players to learn the system. But, having just started out, and not having any equipment, the quality wasn't always great.

With the new edition of Savage Worlds coming out, we thought this would be the perfect time for a new take on learning Savage Worlds. Just as the new Adventure Edition took 15 years of experience, we're putting our experience to use and completely start from scratch on a polished, professional series. We currently have 15 episodes planned for our first season of “Savage Worlds for Beginners”. These are arranged to, step by step, introduce players into everything they might need to know to play a game. Starting with only the rules you’lol need to know if you’re given a pre-generated characters in a one-shot or con game, before advancing into the basics of character creation. We'll round everything off with the Chases Tutorial that more experienced players have been asking for for a long time.

We currently have 15 episodes planned for our first season of “Savage Worlds for Beginners”. These are arranged to, step by step, introduce players into everything they might need to know to play a game. We supply pre-generated characters so players can feel comfortable playing in a one-shot or con game, before advancing into the basics of character creation. We'll round everything off with the Chases Tutorial that more experienced players have been asking for for a long time.

Episode List:

Episode 1: Savage Worlds Introduction: Will introduce the series to new viewers, give viewers an idea of what they will come to learn in the coming episodes, explain why Savage Worlds might be right for you, and introduce many of the characters in the series.

Episode 2: Getting Wild: In this episode, we will break down the basics of dice in Savage Worlds including TN4, the “Wild Die”, and “Acing”.

Episode 3: Your Attributes & You: In this episode we delve deeper into the different attribute scores, as well as the concept of dice size as level of ability.

Episode 4: Hard Core Skills: In this episode we will take the time to look at each of the different Core Skills and their uses.

Episode 5: One Roll to Rule Them All: In this episode we will start teaching the system in practice, with the Quick Encounter rules, including dangerous encounters, staged encounters, and networking.

Episode 6: Getting Social: In this episode we will discuss how social skills are used in Savage Worlds, as well as how Social Conflicts work.

Episode 7: Don't be Dramatic: In this episode we break down dramatic tasks and their many uses.

Episode 8: Wanna Fight About It?: In this episode we cover the basics of combat in Savage Worlds for initiative, parry, range, cover, tests and movement.

Episode 9: I've Been Hit: In this episode we cover the second half of combat, specifically taking damage, soaking, and wounds.

Episode 10: Patch It Up : In this episode we cover the basics of healing including the golden hour, healing checks, injuries, and walking wounded.

Episode 11: Powered Up: In this episode we cover the basics of powers, including arcane backgrounds, power points, and casting modifiers.

Episode 12: Watch for Hazards: In this episode we cover the many hazards in Savage Worlds as well as Fatigue.

Episode 13: It Builds Character: In this episode we begin looking at character creation with edges and hindrances.

Episode 14: My First character: In this episode we wrap up character creation with a step by step "Quick Character Process" that is designed to help new players not feel overwhelmed.

Episode 15: Catch Me if You Can: In our Season Finale, we cover everything you need to know about the Chase rules.

We hope that, at this point, we’ve piqued your interest in seeing our series dedicated to teaching Savage Worlds get made. In all honesty, we could make this series at a kitchen table with a cheap webcam and get the basic information across, but to really help Savage Worlds grow and spread, a professional looking product will go much further outside of our existing community.

The problem is a professional product has professional costs including gear, a crew, and most importantly, insurance.  Below is a basic breakdown of the bare minimum costs to hire the services of a small crew, rent gear, and more.

Minimum Production Costs

Skeleton Crew: $1,000*

Production Gear & Location Fees: $1,000*

Post Production: $2,000

Artist Fees: $500

Kickstarter, Website, & Swag Fulfillment: $1,000

Total: $5,000

*This cost is literally calling in favors and friendships while working off the books with personal, but professional, gear.

As you can see, even a small production adds up fast and this is the main reason we are doing this Kickstarter. While these videos will be free on YouTube for anyone in the gaming community to see, and we could run ads on them…we'll likely be dead of old age before we would even break even. Let alone being able to pay for everything up front!

It's a lot to ask to help fund something that anyone in the community will be able to see online for free once it's finished. That's why we are doing our best to offer some exclusive items only available to those that helped support this season.

The Wylde Button*: Show off your Savage Worlds support with a button of our mascot, “Wylde the Wild Die”!

The Wylde Tote*: We've done buttons for special guests and giveaways before, but never have we done a canvas tote bag. Big enough to carry all the essentials to your game table.

* Notice: As of right now, all physical rewards have shipping included for US backers  We are currently calculating the best costs for international backers.

In addition to the 15 planned episodes we have options to either unlock or flat out purchase additional episodes called Crash Courses. When Savage Worlds Adventure Edition was first revealed, we created three episodes in an attempt to show off the basics of the system. Learning from that experience, we were able to plot out the 15 episode season that would actually do the system justice. But, we also realized that the crash course format could be best used to introduce players and GMs to different savage settings. In less than 15 minutes we will run down the basic pitch for a setting, what makes it special, and any key rules specific to that setting, all in the same style and humor of the core series. As you’ll see in the Stretch Goals below, we already have plans to feature  Deadlands and ETU in their own episodes, but we hope to unlock even more.

We want every penny we raise to go straight into making Savage Worlds content and experiences for the community. With that in mind,we have already plotted out some exciting stretch goals if we exceed our $5,500 goal.

At $6,000 we will be able to get more props and, yes, even puppets for our episodes to add even more fun and humor to each episode.

At $7,000 we will make a Crash Course episode dedicated to the East Texas University setting.

At $8,000 we will also make a Crash Course episode dedicated to the flagship setting for Savage Worlds, Deadlands!

At $9,000 we can upgrade our crew and pay them their actual fees, not the costs they are charging for being friends from college, as well as go through the proper channels to rent better gear and insure all of it properly.

At $10,000 we will take the crew to Genghis Con and have a “The GM Table” booth, where we will be giving out free swag to fans, as well as running Savage Worlds games specifically to teach people the system.

At $12,000 we will produce a documentary covering the history of Savage Worlds, it's impact on the gaming culture, and interviews with many people in the industry about their experiences with the system.

At $14,000…in addition to Genghis Con, the ”The GM Table” crew will also get a booth at ChupacabraCon, with even more free swag and tutorial games!

Starting at $15,000 and every thousand after we will produce another Crash Course episode, and will let backers vote on the setting!

Risks and challenges

One way or another, these episodes will be made. We are still working out the details about being able to have the season being downloadable so backers can burn them as a DVD, complete with menus and bonus features, but otherwise there is no real risk to speak of. If by some disaster we are unable to film in our given window, we will reschedule filming and inform our backers, but we have consistently put out videos on a weekly basis for nearly two years and counting.
