This project will only be funded if it reaches its goal by Sat, March 2 2019 3:00 PM UTC +00:00.
The Demon Collective, Volume 1. Four horror adventures for your favorite tabletop RPG, designed to be easily slotted into existing campaigns or run as one-shots for new and experienced parties.
Sneak through the ruins of an ancient dwarven library, avoiding both the shadows of the past and larger, hungrier threats in Hush.
Venture into the depths of a long lost tomb in search of powerful occult rituals--but be silent in your pillaging, else you wake the Vampire Princess and her deathless subjects, in She's Not Dead, She's Asleep.
Explore the ancient wizarding school, under sinister new management, and solve the mystery of the missing children in Night School.
And hack your way through possessed cultists to save a quiet town from a fate worse than death in Bad Faith.
The Demon Collective, Vol. 1 will include eight original B/W illustrations by Lauren Bryce, with four additional full-page B/W illustrations as a $3500 stretch goal. While a relative newcomer to the RPG scene, she's a long-time gamer and her skill with an isograph pen speaks for itself.
Layout will be handled by David Shugars, whose previous work includes the previously kickstarted 5e/Pathfinder adventure Petals And Thorns: Strangers in Ramshornby Chamomile, as well as Kidnap the Archpriest, Tomb of the Serpent Kings, and Veinscrawl by Skerples.
GMDK is proud to participate in Zine Quest, and as such The Demon Collective, Vol. 1 is represented in its physical form as a saddle-stitched, a5 B/W softcover, digitally printed via Mixam. If the print run exceeds our wildest dreams--to the point where it would be cheaper to mass-print 500 or more copies--we're in talks with an independent print shop that would provide a higher-quality product for a similar price.
The book is currently in layout, so entirely accurate page counts aren't yet available, but current estimates place it at 32-36 pages, depending upon if we hit the stretch goal for four additional full-page art pieces.
We're thrilled to announce that we've partnered with Exalted Funeral, an established storefront for RPGs and other books. Shipping costs to the US are factored into the price, and subsidized for international backers.
$1 or more: Supporter
You're a certified demon now. At just $1 you'll receive the artless, raw text version of The Demon Collective, Vol. 1 as soon as the Kickstarter ends, and be able to comment and receive updates on the project.
$5 or more: PDF
In addition to everything at the $1 level, you'll get the full-art, PDF version of The Demon Collective, Vol. 1, fully interlinked and optimized.
$12 or more: Print + PDF
Everything above, plus a digitally printed, full-art a5 zine shipped right from our infernal realm to yours. Shipping to the US is included in this price, and a subsidy is added for backers outside of the country.
$50 or more: Duchess/Duke of Hell (10 SPOTS ONLY!)
This is where it gets fun. At this price, you'll get a special, one-of-a-kind certificate with a title, rank, and sigil marking you as a greater demon, designed and signed by the Vampire Princess herself: Mabel Harper.
Players always bugging you about optional movement rules? Stop them in their tracks by whipping out your official title, proclaiming you HALCLAST THE THOUSAND-LEGGED, WHOSE STRIDE IS THE MEASURE.
Inspired by the demons listed in the Lesser Keys of Solomon, we'll work with you to define your domain, your name and pseudonyms, and the symbol denoting your influence. Afterwards, we'll ship you a certificate proclaiming such, on high-quality archival paper, to be placed wherever you frequently find yourself needing to prove your infernal authority.
$50 or more: The Doomed (10 SPOTS ONLY!)
Send in a photo, and Lauren will use you as a reference model for one of the doomed adventurers. You'll be petrified by a basilisk, pursued by vampire spawn, overwhelmed by cultist, and ensorcelled by wizards. However, your final moments will be preserved for posterity within the pages of The Demon Collective.
$2,000: Fully Optimized PDF
The works. At this level, David Shugars will give the PDFs the highest quality treatment: full interlinking, toggle layers for a print-friendly design, and total PDF/UA accessibility compliance, for use with text-to-speech programs for the visually impaired.
$3,500: Four New Illustrations
Lauren Bryce will draw four full-page illustrations, one for each adventure.
At this price point, we'll also unlock the option to add on an 18x24 poster of the illustration of your choice for $5 (separate shipping rates will apply).
$5,000: Reference Cards and Hand-Drawn Maps
If we hit this, GMDKs first publication will have succeeded beyond our wildest expectations. We'll have Shay (twitter, instagram) hand-draw the workable-but-basic versions we already have (and which will be in the raw text document) with a beautiful, stippled style that will go perfectly with the rest of the art and design. We'll also include with every print copy a set of a5 reference cards (along with a PDF to print more, if you so choose), printed on both sides, and designed to provide everything you need to run the dungeons at-a-glance. These will be exclusive to Kickstarter backer.
We are GMDK, a tabletop role-playing game publisher devoted to the idea that RPG's are for everyone. Our goal is to provide a way for marginalized writers, artists, and designers to share their vision with the greater gaming world, and to produce high-quality, table-ready books that are as exciting to run the first time as they are the 20th.
We're also committed to paying the best rates in the business for creative work: a significant portion of your backing goes directly to the writers, editor, and artist for this project in the form of royalties, ensuring they are fairly compensated for their work.
Risks and challenges
As this is our first Kickstarter, we've done dozens of hours of research into other projects to avoid the typical pitfalls. The adventures are written, and the book as a whole is in the editing/layout phase. Half of the art has been paid for, and we're working with responsible, established printers and distributors to ensure you get good books on time.
Speaking of time, we've overestimated the time frame in the hopes that we can over-deliver on our promises. The Kickstarter will conclude in early March, and by that time the layout and editing should be done. That gives us an additional 3 months to print, ship, and distribute the rewards to backers. Reasonably, we hope to have the books to you far before then.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
