This book is about Atlantis before the tide turned. It's about Hyperborea before it vanished between dimensions. It's about Nu Yark Citee before the Mushroom Bombs hit.

It’s a Role Playing Game setting guide to the greatest and most ambitious city in the world: Endon. It's about a world slowly tipping onto its side, and all the interesting things that begin to slide at the start of a revolution. It's about people with grand dreams pushing the boundaries of the possible, and the strange machines and devices they create along the way.

But mostly it's about magic.

Magical Industrial Revolution is a 150+ page book, available in both PDF and hardcover. Rather than list everything this book contains, here’s the Table of Contents.

Think of this book as a Locking swEdish Geometric Object kit. You can build the thing on the box cover using all the pieces, or you can make an entirely new kit, or you can integrate it into an existing kit, box of parts, or display. If you don’t like a section, don’t use that section. Maybe you’re only here for the magic items. The entire book is designed to be pulled apart, altered, and recombined.

It’s also designed to be practical: minimum lore, maximum utility. It’s a toolbox, not a decoration.

The items, creatures, citizens, and pre-apocalyptic scenarios in this book are designed to work with any system. There’s a distinct Old School flavour to some areas, but the book was also designed with D&D 5th Edition compatibility in mind. The free preview below should give you an idea of what adjustments might be required to make this book work with your system of choice.

Writing

Skerples coinsandscrolls.blogspot.com

Skerples is an alleged human, blogger, and game designer best known for the Coins and Scrolls blog, the free introductory dungeon Tomb of the Serpent Kings, the heist module Kidnap the Archpriest, the hypothetical time periods of Epochrypha: A Book of Speculative Ages, and the newly released Magical Murder Mansion, a funhouse dungeon full of darkly humorous traps. Skerples also has a patreon for sneak previews of upcoming projects.

Editing and Layout

David Shugars gmdk.org

Every print product Skerples has produced was first moulded into shape by the talented and infinitely patient David Shugars. He’s also successfully run a Kickstarter (The Demon Collective: Volume 1).

Proofreading

Fiona Geist twitter.com/coilingoracle

A book on magic needs a proper spell checker. Fiona’s previous work includes the ultra-best-selling Ultraviolet Grasslands and Mothership: Dead Planet.

Art

Jonathan Newell bearded-devil.com

Some people said detailing every rooftop in a city is excessive. We don’t talk to those people anymore. Jonathan’s exuberant buildings and perspective-based map turned Endon from a fictional place into a fictional place with some very good art attached to it.

Logan Stahl liltachyon.tumblr.com

When the first lobe-finned fish crawled from the sea and stared upwards with bleary eyes, they wondered, “What the hell is that thing?” We now know it was the sun, and it beats down on the art-filled head of Logan Stahl just as it roasted those ancient fish.

Luka Rejec WizardThiefFighter

Author, visionary, artist: all these words are excellent plays in Scrabble. But they also describe Luka Rejec, the untamed void-prophet and ink-savant, creator of the wildly successful Ultraviolet Grasslands, Witchburner, Longwinter, and Red Sky Dead City. He also has a patreon.

Magical Industrial Revolution is available in two formats:

PDF: A fully optimized, hyperlinked, and bookmarked PDF.

Physical Copy: A 150+ page book, A4 hardcover book, printed by Mixiam and delivered by Exalted Funeral. Black-and-white interior, full colour cover.

Check out the free preview. It includes a selection from several chapters.

The book is done.

Not “done” in the way some other Kickstarters use the word. Done-done. First-pass layout is complete; a few upgrades remain. First-pass copy-editing is complete; second-pass is ongoing. Testing is complete. The book could go to the printers tomorrow.

This crowdfunding effort will provide:

  • A method to gauge demand and calibrate the print run size.
  • A way to make the book slightly fancier.

If stretch goals are met, it will also provide:

  • Additional art by Logan Stahl to replace public-domain art.
  • Add-on pamphlets.

By backing now, you are guaranteed a book before anyone else, at a price below the final retail value. Faster, cheaper, better; what’s not to like?

Exalted Funeral, an established storefront for RPGs and other books, will be handing distribution. Shipping costs to the USA are factored into the price, and subsidized for international backers.

The goals are simple. No delays, no extra chapters or bonus tables, no finding a new printer or making pins or learning how to crochet. If there was a need for extra content in the book, we would have added it already.

$5,000 – Paper Upgrade: 80lb Paper - FUNDED

Endon is pseudo Restoration-Georgian-Regency-Victorian fantasy, so printing on properly thick stock seems sensible.

$6,000 – Art Upgrade: Mild Dogs, Gel Knights, & Thaumovoric Eels - FUNDED

Three monsters in the Menagerie will be illustrated by Logan Stahl.

$7,000 – Add-On: The Secret Key: A Visitor’s Guide to Endon - FUNDED

A printable PDF included with all pledges that include the book (Street-Seller tier or above).

A physical copy on glorious 100lb stock will be included with all pledges the Industrial Wizard tier or above.

A 2-sided folded pamphlet designed to assist lost, befuddled, or entrapped visitors... or players. The layout of Endon and her bountiful attractions, from the sinuous curves of the River Burl to the sturdy pillars of the New Bridge, are unfolded and explained. Supported by local business advertisements... so the actual useful content is minimal, but it’s got a map, a list of locations, and some useful tips.

$8,000 –  Art Upgrade: Magical Prosthetics - FUNDED

A full-page illustration by Logan Stahl of a poor adventurer with far too many Magical Prosthetics (both Sensible and Dubious) will be added to the book.

$9,000 – Add-On:  Cumberworld’s Guide to Magical Industry - FUNDED

A printable PDF included with all pledges that include the book (Street-Seller tier or above).

A physical copy on glorious 100lb stock will be included with all pledges the Industrial Wizard tier or above.

A 2-sided folded pamphlet designed to convey useful Magical Industrial knowledge into the minds of wood-headed layabouts... or the players. Contains advice on how to go into business, a copy of the Paradigm, the 8 True Metals and Gems, and standard Magical Industrial equipment. A heady mix of advertisements, engravings, suggestions, falsehoods, and outright lies.

$10,000- Add-On:  Famous Last Words and Scribblings - FUNDED

A printable PDF included with all pledges that include the book (Street-Seller tier or above).

A physical copy on glorious 100lb stock will be included with all pledges the Industrial Wizard tier or above.

This pamphlet includes the last words of petty criminals, poetic musings on their fate, and the slightly mad scribblings of a wizard on the cusp of a breakthrough… or a breakdown.

NEW - $15,000 - Add-On: Mini Art Print

A physical copy  will be included with all pledges the Industrial Wizard tier or above. PDF copies will not be available. This version of the print will be a Kickstarter exclusive. To be honest, I like the idea so much that a poster or larger print might one day appear.

The front of this colour A4 print will include unique, as-yet-unrevealed small poster and a truly terrible pun. The print will be suitable for framing, giving to a colleague, nailing to a door, or burning in disgust. The back will include unique information about this Kickstarter.

NEW - $20,000 - Add-On: Bookplates

A physical copy  will be included with all pledges the Industrial Wizard tier or above. PDF copies will not be available. These bookplates will be a Kickstarter exclusive.

A paste-in label with unique Magical Industrial Revolution-themed art will be shipped with all physical copies of the book.

Since neither of new goals was 100% locked in when the Kickstarter launched there's a chance—not a high chance, but a chance—that we'll need to drop them if there are issues. I'd rather mail the book on time and on budget than throw everything into chaos at the last minute. If there are any changes, we'll make sure it's communicated to all backers.

Kickstarter: August 12th - August 21st

Books Printed: Early October

Books Arrive At Your Location: Late October – Early November.

Stretch goal items will be shipped with the books.

Risks and challenges

The good news is that the book is done. Many of the delays and disasters usually associated with Kickstarters have already happened.

This is Skerples’ first Kickstarter, though the team on this project is very experienced. We have set a very conservative deadline. We hope to ship well ahead of schedule.

If our printer, who has reliably delivered products to Exalted Funeral time and time again, decides to ship paper-wrapped bricks instead of books, we have alternative print options.

If Exalted Funeral runs into difficulties, an alternative distributor will be found, even if it means David needs to turn his garage into a temporary warehouse.

If shipping costs increase, a small safety factor has been built into the campaign. If they increase massively (due to apocalyptic volcanic eruptions, warfare, all gasoline turning into pea soup), we will contact backers on a case-by-case basis to make alternative arrangements.

If the continental United States vanishes suddenly, chances are good everyone will have better things to do than worry about an RPG book.

And no matter what, PDF copies will be emailed to backers.
