What is the GlowGENE kit?
GlowGENE is the kit that let's you create new lifeforms by mixing, cutting and adding DNA from other lifeforms. Sounds cool right?
What can the kit do?
GlowGene lets you you extract genes from other lifeforms and put their DNA inside your cells, giving them traits of that animal. You can make glowing cells using jellyfish DNA, red cells that produce hemoglobin, cells that create ethanol, cells that eat plastic, cells that produce light and so on.
You can combine DNA from multiple organisms to create very complex cells.
The cell's abilities and characteristics you create depend on which animal's DNA you extract with our GlowGene DNA extractor!
(Don't worry, no animals will be harmed)
How does it work?
1. We give you this special cell that can take DNA from animals/plants.
2. You extract DNA from other organisms using our DNA scissors and DNA extractor
(or use our pre-supplied genes)
3. Put them in your cell
4. Observe what new abilities / characteristics your cells have!
What else can our kit do?
Start your DIY Bio lab: With this kit, you can quickly and cheaply join the DIY bio community with some of the equipment this kit supplies.Start a microbiology lab: With all the tools for a microbiology lab, except for a microscope, you can start culturing your favorite fungi or microorganisms straight away by following our guide.
Start a GMO library: You can store genes you want inside the cells and they will stay inside and replicate along with the cells. When you want the gene back, you can extract it out of the cells using our DNA extractor.
Start a BioHacking laboratory: With the GlowGENE kit you can use it as the foundation for your BioHacking ventures, because we all know, genetic engineering is the funnest biohacking there is.

Where will the funds go?
They will go into purchasing reagents and kit equipment in bulk. We will then modify them in our lab for the purposes of the kit. We have a few friends in lab supplying companies who can give us good deals for good quality reagents :D
Isn't bio-hacking dangerous?
We realize that public opinion against genetic engineering hasn't always been positive and such a kit may stir some emotion in certain members of the public. So we assure you, GlowGENE is perfectly safe, users cannot extract DNA from pathogens (pathogenic genes are quite complex and work in unison) and that organisms that are created with the kit aren't able to compete properly in the wild if they are accidentally released because of the strain used.
What's our goal?
We're a bunch of university students who are regularly involved in biohacking and synthetic biology. When we found out that it was so expensive just to start up a simple lab to genetically engineer organisms, we decided that we could help out, so we created GlowGENE. We've been working on GlowGENE for nearly a year now and we hope that this product really can let curious people like ourselves start their own labs and genetically engineer organisms at their own pace.
Our future will be to develop products that complement genetic engineering and bio-hacking so tinkerers and students can learn and do great things!

Risks and challenges
Our project has been running quite smoothly since January and we haven't run into any major problems. The biggest risk we believe is on the backers side, we're worried that they will mess up something like forget to feed their cells and kill all of their cells, but we are prepared to send replacements for the shipping cost only to ensure everyone can work GlowGENE trouble free; even if we have to pay from out pockets.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
