About this project
TO OUR BACKERS:Thank you for believing in this product as much as we do. Your support is the reason this story gets another chapter. We can't wait to share our work with you. --Team PLSCO
MISSED THE CAMPAIGN?
We are now accepting pre-orders for Glowdeck (slated to ship in December) on our website.
By combining a Qi-standard* wireless charging surface and a USB port for wired charging, Glowdeck makes the charging experience as flexible and convenient as possible.
Glowdeck is the first Qi wireless charger that actually knows your phone's precise charge level.
What makes Glowdeck unique is the way its various elements work together, giving each individual feature capabilities that would not be possible on their own.
In most cases, Qi charging pads continuously transmit power to the phone they're charging, even after the phone is topped-off. This can deplete the lifespan of your phone's battery.
Glowdeck solves that problem.
So long as your phone is connected to Glowdeck via Bluetooth, Glowdeck is able to poll your phone's charge level directly and disable the charging surface automatically when your phone reaches 100%.
By combining the data capabilities of Bluetooth 4.0 with the convenience of a wireless charging surface, Glowdeck raises the bar for what you will come to expect from the wireless charging experience.
I have a [insert phone]. Will I be able to charge it wirelessly on Glowdeck's surface?
Some phones are ready to charge wirelessly out of the box, while others require a Qi accessory to enable wireless charging.*
Stretch Goal #1: You can now add a Qi-receiver (for iPhone 5/5S/5C and Galaxy S3/S4/S5 to your reward by increasing your pledge level by $9 per receiver you want (click here for instructions on increasing your pledge). Check out Update #9 for more details on our under-the-case Qi-receivers.
*Visit the FAQ at the bottom of this page for information on Qi compatibility with your smartphone.
A pair of high-quality stereo speakers, an embedded noise-canceling microphone, and a state of the art Bluetooth module combine to bring you the best Bluetooth experience currently available.
Glowdeck's unique LED light system keeps you informed of incoming and missed events, such as calls, texts, email, and more.
The lights also sync to your music to perform a dynamic light show in real time.
Streams is a brand new notifications platform. A "Stream" can be any kind of event, alert, update, or notification that occurs in the digital world.
Enable the Streams you want to see using our mobile app:
The interface allows you to subscribe to different media and interact with each in the same place. Check your messages, get news alerts, see updates from your Twitter feed - all in a single Stream.
When Streams detects something new, it prints general information about the event on Glowdeck's display and adds the event to your log in the app. And if you have light notifications enabled for that type of event, Glowdeck will perform the appropriate light routine.

The Beta Program
This campaign is about getting and responding to feedback from real users. Once we succeeded in getting all of Glowdeck's physical hardware in working order, our focus shifted to Streams (the software side of this product). We want to know what you do and don't like about our new notifications platform.
As a backer, you will have access to our beta portal, where you can post comments and questions and interact with the rest of the beta community. We will be actively engaged on the beta portal, and you will receive periodic software updates in which we try to address the comments we've received.
The beta has something for everyone:
If you like being the first to get your hands on a new product, you've come to the right place. Your support helps us move forward with product development. We would love to get your feedback once you've had a chance to try out your new Glowdeck, but participation in the beta portal is up to you (and we will be grateful that you backed us either way!).
If not for the existence of a vibrant and supportive maker community, Glowdeck might never have moved from a sketch to a fully functioning product. It seemed only fitting to give something back to the community that made it possible to reach this point so quickly.
So, we decided to make the hardware inside Glowdeck open-source, and offer a development board (or "dev board") to hobbyists and professional coders alike.
The dev board is Arduino compatible and USB-programmable. We will encourage makers to have fun experimenting with the dev board, and to post their sketches in our forum.
Glowdeck aims to be a simple device that helps reduce the complexity in people's lives. The exterior casing minimizes superfluous elements by reducing the interface to a color LCD, coupled with two high quality speakers. The simplicity of the floating box allows for light to shine down and reflect off your table top surface, creating a calming glow to notify you of any new alerts. The rear of the case has the power button, the power jack, and a USB port for connected charging, should you wish to use it.
To achieve our vision, we created countless models, prototypes, and circuits over the past year. Here's a glimpse into our design process:
To achieve the simple interface we wanted, we integrated press functions into the case itself, making all of Glowdeck a sort of button. Use the press interface to interact with your Streams, activate the voice assistant, make/take a call, play music, adjust volume, and more.
Video (above): Pressing front/left/right of Glowdeck's surface triggers context-dependent actions.
To bring technology and furniture together, we designed Glowdeck to fit seamlessly into your living and working spaces. The wood finishes that wrap Glowdeck's high-tech capabilities make it a soothing and aesthetically pleasing table-top accessory. Glowdeck comes in four different finishes to appeal to your taste and fit into your environment:
Risks and challenges
We have expertly designed printed circuit boards in hand. We have sourced parts and materials for the electronics and enclosures. All that remains to be done on the physical product side is tweaking the speaker cabinets to maximize sound quality/loudness. And on the software side, we will be getting the mobile apps ready for submission to their respective app stores so they are available to download when the beta units ship.
We estimate delivery of all beta units by August because we genuinely believe that we will be able to meet that mark. We promise that we will be transparent with all of our backers throughout the production process, and will do everything possible to ensure that you receive your rewards on time.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
Glowdeck's wireless charging surface is compatible with all phones have Qi technology built-in, or that are equipped with a Qi accessory to enable wireless charging functionality.
For your convenience, we've compiled a list of phones that come with Qi technology out of the box (Qi-Integrated) or for which Qi accessories are widely available (Qi-Ready).
If you don't see your phone on the list, it is possible an accessory that enables wireless charging on your phone has been released since this post (this website claims to maintain an updated list graphical list of Qi compatible phones: http://www.qinside.biz/en/faq/qi-enabled-phones). Otherwise, you can still use Glowdeck's USB port for charging and enjoy all of its other great features!
Qi-Integrated & Qi-Ready Devices (as of March 2014):
-Apple iPhone 4, 4S, 5, 5S [Qi-Ready]
-Google Nexus 4, 5, 7 [Qi-Integrated]
-HTC Droid DNA [Qi-Integrated]
-Nokia Lumia 920, 822, 820, 810, 720, 1020, 925, 928, 1520 [Qi-Integrated]
-Samsung Galaxy S5, S4, and S3 [Qi-Ready]
-Samsung Galaxy Note II, III [Qi-Ready]

The number one difference is the product itself. After that campaign ended, we devoted 7 months to extensively developing every aspect of Glowdeck. From the hardware inside Glowdeck to the software that runs Glowdeck's user interface and mobile apps, Glowdeck is now in a different league from where it was at last July. We added "Streams" to the offering, and much more.
Second, this time, we are offering Glowdeck at a significant discount from our anticipated retail price point. The way we see it, Glowdeck's Bluetooth sound system alone is on par (or better than) the quality of similarly priced Bluetooth speakers currently on the market. But Glowdeck packs tons of features not found in those other speakers, making it a great value for Kickstarter backers.
Third, our production timeline is much shorter this time around. This is thanks in large part to the time and resources we invested in productizing the electronics pre-launch. Last time, our plan was to invest in these things if the campaign succeeded. This time, we believed so strongly in what Glowdeck has become that we took those steps ourselves before presenting it to you.
Those are the broad strokes. If you backed the last campaign, feel free to read on for more specifics. Otherwise, this campaign page should contain everything you need to know!
-We are not offering the Glowdeck Mini at this time. If enough people still want it, we will consider adding it as a reward, but our primary focus is on the regular version of Glowdeck.
-Last time we offered Glowdeck in single and multiple device editions (the multiple device edition could charge two phones at once). To ensure that everyone is testing the same product - and because we got the sense that people were mainly interested in this product for individual use - Glowdeck Beta units are all single device editions. Again, if enough people write in asking for a multiple device version, we will consider offering it again as a reward option.
-The previous version of Glowdeck had an internal power supply (you may recall our marketing strategy of filming someone using Glowdeck on a camping trip - I believe it was resting on top of a cooler in a tent). Because it can do so many things at once, a large and pricy battery was necessary to make the Glowdeck/camping scenario a reality. While we like portable products as much as anyone else, we have come to see Glowdeck as the kind of product that is better situated on a night table or office desk than on a cooler in a tent in the woods. All of that is to say that Glowdeck Beta will not be battery powered. If the internal battery was a crucial feature for you, please let us know why so we can consider how to proceed with future builds.
The Glowdeck Beta units currently offered as rewards wirelessly charge one device at a time. You can charge two devices simultaneously if the second device uses the USB port to charge. If wirelessly charging two devices at once is something enough people are interested in, we will consider adding it as a reward option (we actually prototyped a multiple device edition last year but decided not to offer it in this campaign due to low demand and higher cost).
Yes, Glowdeck comes with a 12V DC power adapter. For international backers, we will provide a power adapter that works with the voltage/plug standards in your region.
Aside from whatever custom creations you have in mind for an Arduino-compatible board with built in Wifi, Bluetooth, LEDs, and more, we very much hope that the developer community will provide feedback (and even custom code ideas) to help us make Streams even better before it is made available to the public. Ideally, the beta portal will work much like any other open source hardware forum - with people interacting, asking questions, and sharing their work.
To be clear, there are only 3 things the developer board reward does NOT include: (1) the wireless charging apparatus; (2) the speakers (though the 2x10W stereo amp is on the board, so you can grab a pair of even bigger speakers than those in the Glowdeck Beta units); and (3) the Glowdeck wood/plastic enclosure.
We will be updating the Maker section with new content and a video to clarify what the dev board reward is all about, so check back soon.
If the alarm on my iPhone goes off (scheduled with the iOS Clock app by Apple), will I hear it out of the speakers?
Yes. If you set your alarm the standard way through the iOS Clock app and your phone is connected to Glowdeck via Bluetooth, the alarm sound will play through the speakers.
You can also set an alarm through our app, which gives you two additional options:
(1) Play a song as your alarm tone.
(2) Have Glowdeck perform a bright light routine before switching to a traditional sound-based alarm. You have 30 seconds to press the front once the lights begin flashing before Glowdeck gives up and switches to sound.
A hypothetical: I have light notifications enabled for incoming email on the Glowdeck on my night stand. My significant other goes to bed before I do. Will Glowdeck be flashing light notifications even when I'm not in the room?
Glowdeck was designed to be big and bright enough for its user to read and see incoming Streams from bed or an office desk chair, yet small enough that people nearby can only make out a clock from a few feet away.
So what if you get out of bed or step away from the desk where Glowdeck is situated? To address this, we created something called "Privacy Mode" (which you can easily turn on and off using our mobile app).
When Privacy Mode is enabled, Glowdeck will only display Streams and light notifications if your phone is on or within a few inches of Glowdeck's charging surface. When disabled, Glowdeck will continue displaying Streams and light notifications even if your phone is in another country (so long as Glowdeck is connected to your Wifi).
Yes, you can dim Glowdeck's display from bright to dark to off using a slider in the Glowdeck mobile app (similar to the way you adjust your phone's screen brightness).
And you can set up a custom group of urgent notifications that will turn the display back on and perform a light routine to alert you to the event during your sleeping hours.
We’ve made this really simple! You can increase your current pledge by $9 per Qi adapter (so if you want 3, add $27), and we’ll ship them out with your Glowdeck. You’ll be able to specify which types of Qi receivers you want at the end of the campaign.
To increase your current pledge, go back to the main campaign page and click "Manage My Pledge", as demonstrated here:
Absolutely! Just remember that it’s $9 per Qi receiver (so: $9 for 1, $18 for 2, $27 for 3, and so on). And you’ll be able to specify which types of Qi receivers you want at the end of the campaign.
Yes! The Qi-receivers just need to work with your phone. See the video in Update #9:
for an example of a Qi-receiver being setup with an iPhone.
The Qi receiver is a small thin sleeve that conveniently fits under your existing case. Check out Update #9:
to see a video of what it looks like and how to attach it to your iPhone! We’ll be posting details for the other models soon.
