About this project
Inspiring “Theme Song” for the Whole World!
MISSION: "Song for a New World" – create a “theme song” for the “global community” that becomes known and sung globally and achieves recognition for promoting a greater sense of “global community,” and awareness that all countries are interdependent on a healthy “global economy... and environment!” To be performed in many styles from pop, Rock, R&B and HipHop to Country & Western, Blues, Metal, and Folk!!!
global peace and cooperation, the project goal of uniting the global community through music, contributor participation, appealing rewards, and effective use of social media to reach contributors.
The discrete “KickStarter Project” includes: (1) formation of Global Ensemble [DONE], (2) production [DEMO], (3) recording [DEMO], (4) promotion, and (5) distribution of new song…. and (6) concludes with Internet/social media-coordinated, traditional-media-covered “Guinness Record” event – “most people on Earth singing the same song LIVE at the same time.”
Our goal is to produce a professional recording of lyrics written to serve as the “theme song” for the “global community” – promoting peace, harmony, and greater prosperity everywhere! The "basic" demo was recorded by a “global ensemble” of eight (8) Berklee-trained singers, representing every continent except Antarctica, and one singer representing non-continental countries. (The Australian singer was not available for recording.)
The funds are being raised to compose, arrange, produce, distribute, and promote a "commercial-quality" recording that will be released via YouTube in an Internet-coordinated media campaign to attract singers from around the world to record and promote their own versions of the song in many different music styles to engage the broadest possible audience. The project will culminate in 12 to 18 months after our KickStarter campaign with an Internet-coordinated sing-along that sets a Guinness Record for “Largest number of people on Earth singing the same song at the same time.” (Search and you will see that’s no big challenge.)
We understand the key to a successful KickStarter project is: (1) effective use of social media to reach and engage personal and targeted contacts, (2) getting support of individuals and groups who will likely be interested in our project, and (3) traditional media coverage. Our media-savvy project leaders, a wide range of people and organizations who have already expressed great interest and support over five years since lyrics were written, and the personal contacts and influence of our ensemble members (from eight countries and six continents) gives us a great base of personal contacts.
We have already contacted or targeted/listed International organizations from the UN to music schools and colleges and progressive social groups, to progressive entertainers and entrepreneurs asking support for both our KickStarter project and our broader objective of promoting the song as the “default theme song” for the global community. Read the song lyrics and you can probably feel the breadth of appeal and support it can inspire.
Risks and challenges
Our three biggest challenges, we believe, are:
(1) Reaching our funding goal, but we've discussed our advantages there; just have to do the work. Our potential & hope is, of course, very significant over-funding!
(2) Attracting radio stations (and other organizations & individuals) around the world to "host" and document the "sing-along" gatherings to assure our Guinness Record claim. These gatherings will occur simultaneously... meaning "around the clock" globally. You won't be able to keep the commercial media away ;) [BTW... we will draw among the most populous time zones for the "start time."
Fishkin and I have high-level music radio contacts whose stations belong to large " corporate groups" that will provide initial "thrust" in attracting pop music stations in other countries to "host" parties/fan gatherings to support the Guinness quest. If YOU managed such a station (or group) in any country/market, would you not covet that marketing/promotional opportunity? I have already talked or will be talking with former employers WXYZ-TV/Radio/Detroit and WBZ-TV/Radio/Boston... and Ken has talent & management relationships with many stations (and celebrities) here and elsewhere, and Sunny Lake (Berklee alum) has broadcast, performer, and corporate ties of great value to the project. I also have a list of friends and associates at virtually all the networks and many civic/social organizations. Andrew Mui is a "Film" grad, with young tech-savvy friends, a big "social media" PLUS!
(3) Fulfilling reward obligations on time. Fishkin, our PR rep., and I have detailed commitments for each reward, will take that info to the P.O. and make sure we are covered on the basic cost end... then either organize friends to do the work, or hire a fulfillment company for that task.
And we will greatly appreciate YOUR advice on any of the above. This all began as an emotional reaction to a rational observation; most people ARE open to and could benefit greatly from a heightened sense of "community" among the world's population. And, we feel, it's imperative for more people to better understand the reality of economic "interdependence" among all nations. It (our project) is evolving into a passion, almost an obsession with "making a difference" in that regard. Please read the lyrics to our song, and just IMAGINE people all around the globe embracing those words...together!
Thank you for your consideration, and we sincerely look forward to working with you... AND we believe that GLOBAL success with this project will have immeasurable value for all involved: project leaders, talent, Berklee, Kickstarter, YouTube, supporting media, working media, sponsors, et. al.
On behalf of Ken Fishkin, Andrew Mui, Sunny Lake, and our "Song4 Global Ensemble" members, I say...
Thank you very much KICKSTARTER for this amazing platform,
Walter G. (Buzz) Luttrell
Our goal is to produce a professional recording of lyrics written to serve as the “theme song” for the “global community” – promoting peace and harmony worldwide. The initial version of the song will be performed by a “global ensemble” of eight (8) Berklee-trained singers, representing every continent except Antarctica, plus another representing non-continental countries. (We have a singer from Australia, but he was unable to complete his recording because of an important career development opportunity/schedule conflict - he, or another Australian, will sing in the commercial-quality YouTube release for which we are raising funds.) It will be released via YouTube in an Internet-coordinated media campaign to attract singers from around the world to record and promote their own versions of the song in many different music styles to engage the broadest possible audience.
The project will culminate in an Internet-coordinated sing-along that sets a Guinness Record for “Largest number of people singing the same song at the same time.” (Search shows no such Guinness Record now)
WE BELIEVE WE CAN ACHIEVE THIS GOAL... because: much of the planning is already done (read rest of FAQ's); the extraordinary commitments and in-kind contributions of those already involved; and the effective employment of social & traditional media to promote this idea world-wide very quickly. Our projected budget get's us through the Global Sing Along... media coverage of THAT event will fuel the world-wide participation that will make the project a long-term success. Our projected costs are:
1. Arrangement, production and recording of "Song for a New World" in a polished,
professional version for world-wide release -- $15,000
2. Establishment of a global network for the sing-a-long -- $15,000
3. Technical design and support to organize cover versions of the song categorized by
country, performer, and song style -- $10,000
4. Public relations, promotion, advertising and outreach for the sing-a-long to insure
success -- $35,000
5. Total: $75,000 [Reduced to $64,000 as minimally adequate]
NOTE: "Song4" is sometimes used as a shortened reference to "Song for a New World" ;)
YES!!! We certainly hope so. Professional “covers” will bring attention and royalties to the project to help fund administration, promotional, and project expansion activities, and amateurs can use this project as a “platform” to promote not only world peace and progress, but also their own careers.
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) lists 204 countries in the world, using a 3-digit code for each. As new recordings arrive, they will be listed by country in alphabetical order.
To easily find a specific recording/song version, we use a “naming convention” with five REQUIRED components: (1) Song4, (2) Performer, (3) IOC Country Code, (4) Music Style,
(5) Performer-provided 4-digit "personal" ID Code.
[[SEE NAMING CONVENTION AFTER THIS ANSWER]]
This “naming convention” is very useful in growing global participation. As we see which countries have not yet participated, we will work through Internet-based “social media, local traditional media, UN offices, international organizations, music schools, etc. to encourage participation… until our alphabetized list is FULL… may take some time… but IMAGINE the publicity we can generate as we fill the list???
"NAMING CONVENTION" TO IDENTIFY DIFFERENT VERSIONS OF 'SONG4'"
The current strategy for promoting “Song for a New World” as the “theme song” for the “Global Community” requires that ALL subsequent recordings of the song bear the same title, but with a sub-title “identifier” that makes it easy to identify the source (performer) for those seeking to find a specific version of the song on our YouTube page/section. Therefore each sub-title must bear the following components in the order shown below.
By promoting t-h-e-i-r “listing code,” performers actually promote the campaign!
2) Representation of performer’s name (maximum of 8 [eight] characters)
3) Performer’s country (“groups” decide which ONE to use) – Using International Olympic
Committee (IOC) Country Code (link to list provided*)
4) Song style (from list provided)
5) 4-digit PERFORMER PROVIDED ID code (numbers and letters only)
o Each of the five (5) components must be separated by a period ( . )
o If members of groups-in-conflict sing together they use co. code where song was recorded,
but song appears under all countries involved (See last example.)

The ultimate goal of our campaign is to have every country on Earth involved, knowing the song lyrics and tune, and submitting at least ONE recording; hopefully many versions. Since all countries in the world will be listed in alphabetical order, using the IOC “Current” country codes, we have a dramatic, interesting, easy way to show which countries have submitted recordings! Excitement builds as the list of participating countries grows. And those NOT represented can be approached to encourage/challenge them TO participate through their UN offices, music colleges, government offices, most popular local social and traditional media , etc.
When people looking for information about “Song For A New World” visit YouTube, they will see and hear our original version by our “Song4 Global Ensemble.” Then see a brief explanation of campaign/project goals, i.e. world-wide participation via our planned live, Internet-coordinated “sing-along,” and our appeal to musicians everywhere to record/cover the song in various styles. We will LIST the styles - from “Traditional Folk” to Hip Hop. This will generate both participation AND news coverage (eventually) of criticism and debate over which music styles are listed!!!
YouTube visitors will also read (and probably see a video) on our song “naming convention,” then click on a link that takes them to our alphabetized list of the world’s countries and the recordings submitted from each. Their WILL be complexities… like our last example above – Song For A New World, by “Arab & Israeli Friends.” It will be listed under Palestine (PLE) AND every other participating Middle-Eastern country! AND it will be linked to “Israel and Iran; A Love Story” – (though Iran is Persian, not Arabic) http://www.ted.com/talks/israel_and_iran_a_love_story.html - check it out and you’ll see why WE want to be linked to THIS very inspiring site. We call them, describe OUR project and ask if they will submit a recording to our project, Result? Mutual support! We follow same networking process with many progressive groups, organizations, individuals everywhere – our networking potential is immense!
This should be of great value to both YouTube & Berklee, since we are using Berklee-trained talent exclusively in our “Song4 Global Ensemble,” and YouTube will be getting an immense amount of new traffic – worldwide! YouTube has already named Berklee a “YouTube Ambassador,” for effective use of its site for business objectives; marketing its online music courses internationally. (THE SUCCESS OF OUR PROJECT ALSO MEANS GLOBAL EXPOSURE FOR KICKSTARTER ;)

(For me, Buzz, as the songwriter/project creator.) Independent!!! I was raised by parents who opposed joining any political party; felt you should inform yourself as best you can, then vote for the “best person.” Otherwise, they said, you are excusing yourself from thinking… if you just vote, automatically, for a party.
I was watching CNN-TV the night Barack Obama was elected President in 2008 and was amazed that people ALL OVER THE WORLD watched excitedly as votes were tabulated then “joined the celebration,” cheering, hugging, and crying tears of joy? I was 64, had been a “news junkie” all my adult life, and had never seen (nor heard of) such a global reaction to the election of ANY national leader!
Many opinion leaders had begun to say that trade, shared concern about environmental threats, advanced communications technology, et. al. have, of necessity, turned Earth’s citizens into a “global community!” THAT NIGHT, THOSE SCENES made me feel that we are now emotionally connected in that sense of “community.” The basic lyrics just sort of flowed from my mind that night, with some changes as time passed. One verse was eventually dropped. (I’ll print, autograph, and send “the missing verse” to all who contribute over $100.00.
ALSO, I had noticed the growing number of social activist singers/celebrities - like Bono, Will-i-am, Streisand, Wyclef, Shakira, Stevie, Sean Penn, Willie Nelson, Dollie, Angelina & Brad, Celine, Katie, et. al. and thought “When they read these lyrics and see what we are trying to do – create a theme song for the “Global Community” – they will “cover” it and/or use it in their efforts to promote global peace & cooperation, fight poverty & global pollution, etc. The song, hopefully, can also become for all international gatherings of a progressive nature, what Bob Dylan’s “Blowin In The Wind” was to the U.S. Civil Rights Movement.
IF YOU HAVE BEEN WORKING ON THIS PROJECT SINCE 2008, WHAT HAS TAKEN SO LONG TO GET TO THE KICKSTARTER FUNDING CAMPAIGN?
(Wow, I’ll try to compress this.) In November ’08 my wife and I were spending the cold season in Panama (vs. Boston), so I started searching for a “noted” local musician to create music for my lyrics. A nearby music store operator suggested Rodrigo Denis, local jazz/pop fusion “phenom,” who also had a studio in L.A. (Great!) Rod contacted me, loved the concept (global theme song), and agreed to work for “delayed” compensation. He had to pull back after 4-5 months and two rough demos (had to pay the bills)… and I was diagnosed with prostate cancer (June ’09) about that time. Needed time off for “adjustments.” We lost contact, but neither interest nor faith in the project concept. (BTW, I’m doing fine, thanks.)
Meanwhile, my son, Greg, a very busy professional musician, advised me on lyric changes, but spends about half his time in China as “headliner” at the “Shanghai House of Blues & Jazz” – no time for writing music. But, Ken Fishkin, my former Atty/agent from my TV days, agreed to contribute his time as my legal advisor/business partner. We requested help from a variety of composers, but decided to use Rodrigo Denis’ demo-track music… and started looking for a way to assemble a “Global Ensemble” to record the song. We would use a “benchmark” recording by this group/ensemble to raise money for commercial-quality composition, production, distribution, and promotion of a You Tube release to launch our global campaign. Remember, the goal is global participation in recording and promoting “Song4” in many different music styles and languages for embrace by ALL members or our “global community!”
I remembered that Rodrigo, had attended Boston’s Berklee College of Music. Bingo! BCM attracts students from every part of the globe. Hey, we could put everything together without leaving Boston… but I had no budget; would “borrow” from our retirement funds to get started.
After months of learning “how things work at BCM, feeling great frustration and ready to “give up,” I remembered how Canada’s Lisa Lavie, a fabulous singer in her own right, had created an Internet sensation with her “redo” of the 1985 Michael Jackson/Quincy Jones hit “We Are The World,” which raised millions for famine victims in Africa. Of course, big name singers came running…when Michael and Quincy called, Lavie simply asked “aspiring stars” on YouTube to send in their recordings of “We Are The World,” edited them together, and came up with a “viral” hit that helped raise millions for Haitian earthquake victims in 2010.
So, in April ’12, I posted a call for Berklee-trained singers to represent every continent on Earth, sans The South Pole – penguins don’t sing – AND one from non-continental countries (got Malaysia). Like Rodrigo Denis, the singers agreed to participate for “a pittance” and “future consideration” plus the possibility of great exposure for their singing careers!” They loved the idea (global theme song) and the concept; popularize the song by challenging pros and amateurs alike to record it in many different styles (and languages) to attract the broadest audience possible… to reach every corner of the earth – “the global COMMUNITY!”
Success with our KickStarter project, we are confident, will help attract corporate sponsorships for eventual periodic international TV awards for the best “new version(s) of the song. Then song royalties, (logo) merchandising revenue, and private contributions can fund expansion of global branding/marketing activities, AND support a four-year music scholarship for the best individual amateur talent we can find in the continent/country that hosts the awards ceremony in subsequent years. With your help in making this project a global success, one can only imagine the future possibilities!
Now, please, wish us luck and pledge what you can for our KickStarter campaign! Thank you!!!
