Why This Book?

Stories bring people together. My family has seen our lives changed time after time by the unifying power of stories. Whether it’s Homer Price, Treasure Island, The Hobbit, The Hardy Boys, or the Penderwicks, we’ve reveled in coming together around stories that have impressed on us the goodness of being good and the power of adventure to “baptize the imagination,” as C.S. Lewis said.

About five years ago, I hatched the Tumbleweed Thompson stories as a series of episodic tales set in the frontier town of Rattlesnake Junction, Colorado. They were a hoot to write, and folks online at Story Warren, and at the schools where I read them really seemed to take to them. A couple years went by, and the seed of a novel began to sprout, something richer and more meaningful than those tales. So I chased down that novel, featuring Eugene Appleton and Tumbleweed Thompson, two boys hungry for adventure, and just lucky - or unlucky - enough to find it in their own backyard.

Along the way, through my involvement with a pair of lovely communities - Story Warren and The Rabbit Room - I’ve come to realize the beauty of pursuing a calling to tell stories which awaken the imagination, quicken the blood, and draw folks closer to the truth, beauty, and goodness in the world. So I’ve become more dedicated to pursuing this calling in my own life by taking the Tumbleweed novel out into the world.

It’s time to dare greatly. And though it seems like a giant leap of faith, I want to take it. And I invite you to come along with me.

The story of Eugene Appleton and Tumbleweed Thompson has been a part of my home for the better part of five years, and I can’t wait for it to be a part of yours! I’ve had readers of all ages tell me they’ve loved the exploits of Eugene and Tumbleweed. Now, it’s time for them to get the novel they deserve.

And Kickstarter is the perfect platform to gather a “whole passel of folks,” as Eugene would say, around this story. As with any Kickstarter campaign, there’s the obvious all-or-nothing risk. If we can't reach the goal, this book won't get published. But I’m counting on the momentum of us all pulling together, spreading the word, daring greatly together, to make something really special happen!

What’s The Book About?

The novel follows 12-year old Eugene Appleton, whose summer in the frontier town of Rattlesnake Junction, Colorado promises to be just as sleepy as the ones before, with his only excitement provided by the pulse-pounding Dead-Eye Dan adventure novels he devours. But Eugene’s life swerves into unexpected territory with the arrival of Tumbleweed Thompson, a gangly, red-haired drifter who spins yarns about whaling voyages in the Atlantic and hidden stashes of gunpowder. Drawn into Tumbleweed’s orbit, Eugene soon finds himself chasing smugglers, firing rifles, and competing for the attention of the lovely Charlotte Scoggins.

But Eugene and Tumbleweed’s innocent mischief takes a serious turn when they stumble across a sinister plot hatched by the infamous Clean Shave Gang. Soon, Eugene finds himself smack inside the middle of a twisty plot straight out of a Dead-Eye Dan book. He and Tumbleweed discover they’ve learned more from each other than they had thought. But will it be enough to thwart the Clean Shave Gang’s plans?

About the Author

Glenn McCarty is the author of the children's chapter book Horace and Oscar Visit the Lake. He has written about stories and parenting at Story Warren, and has shared the magic of stories with children and adults through speaking engagements, workshops, and hands-on writing classes. He lives with his wife, two boys, and a cowardly dog in a small town in Western New York that’s pretty much Mayberry. He wishes he could play the banjo, and has a slight obsession with all things Pixar. But he’s working through it.

About the Illustrator

Joe Sutphin is an illustrator for kids books such as the New York Times bestseller Word Of Mouse by James Patterson, the Dr. Critchlore’s School For Minions series by Sheila Grau, Raffie On The Run by Jacqueline Resnick, and Andrew Peterson's The Warden and the Wolf King. His artwork has also been featured in the New York Times. When he is not drawing and writing stories, Joe spends as much time in nature as possible, looking under rocks and catching critters.
