Our home in Australia is the old Victoria Police Headquarters conversion – Melbourne’s highest freestanding example of the art deco skyscraper style. The design of The Metropolitan is a nod to Melbourne’s many amazing Art Deco buildings.
Now living in Hong Kong, our night sky is filled with the glow of neon. There’s a buzzing energy here, and the full-face lume of the Metropolitan captures this energy.
(Check the project updates for a list of links to the Ayers Metropolitan reviews and articles.)
The Metropolitan was designed to shift from office to outdoors, so versatility and durability were front of mind in the design process.
Well suited for office, weekend or outdoor wear, each element of The Metropolitan has been painstakingly, personally selected for its quality.
Backers are receiving a small run, very high quality product with the costs of middlemen or large marketing budgets removed from the equation. (Check the video review below from Watch It All About for a closer look at the build quality)
The watch face and exhibition back are protected with sapphire crystal, the least prone to scratch or shatter. Anti-reflective coating not only reduces reflection, but also improves transmission of light to enhance the watch face’s striking colour and texture.
Case and bracelet are Grade 316L Surgical Stainless Steel; the steel of choice for biomedical applications as its low carbon content delivers increased corrosion resistance.
The Metropolitan’s 100M water resistance is suitable for swimming, snorkeling and non hot water showering.
After maintaining it's refined face in the office during the daytime, the Metropolitan lets loose a little at night.
The full face Swiss Super-LumiNova® creates a striking conversation piece inspired by the ever glowing sky of Hong Kong at night.
The hour marker indices, and hour and minute arms feature hand applied Swiss Super-LumiNova®.
When charged by sunlight, LED or UV light, the lume blazes brightly initially then mutes to a light glow that is visible all night.
Miyota 9015 was the only choice. The slimmest of the Japanese options, the 28,800 vibrations per hour allow for greater precision and accuracy in time-keeping and results in a really smooth sweep of the second hand.
(See the reviews at 28 Days Earlier and Watch It All About for their tests on the accuracy of this movement in one of our Metropolitan prototypes)
Multi Layer Sandwich Dial
The face of the Metropolitan consists of multiple layers, textures and colours that provide an unexpected level of depth and detail for a relatively minimalist piece, often referred to as resembling stained glass.
Our backers will each receive this limited edition Metropolitan watch at around half retail price, individually numbered according to the purchase queue and colour chosen.
Each watch will be shipped in its own black piano finish box.
International postage via national postal service is included in the reward price.
If you would like to upgrade to international courier for faster, more reliable tracked postage, simply add HKD$200 to your pledge.
There are three models of The Metropolitan available; you will choose your colour via survey after the campaign is done.
MT-01 White BGW9 Super-LumiNova® on Dark Blue Super-LumiNova®
MT-02 Dark Grey Super-LumiNova® on White BGW9 Super-LumiNova®
MT-03 Dark Orange Super-LumiNova® on White BGW9 Super-LumiNova®

Risks and challenges
We’ve made every effort to ensure our estimates for delivery timelines are accurate, but with individual manufacturers responsible for individual components of the watch, we recognise that there is always potential for unexpected delay. Additionally, in shipping, some countries’ customs may take longer to release packages than others. It is worth checking if your country is prone to such delays to avoid disappointment.
There may be Duty/VAT charges imposed on the receiver, depending on your country. We will not be covering these extra location specific costs.
Upon successful funding, we will share our progress each week, outlining any delays, problems and issues if they should occur.
Glenn is an experienced Programme Director, and Sally a Project Manager both familiar with delivering large scale global and regional projects. We are therefore confident in our ability to mitigate any risks and potential delays in The Metropolitan project and enjoy delivery of rewards as smoothly as possible.
The Metropolitan will undergo two rounds of quality assurance before shipment. First at the factory, and then here in Hong Kong where Glenn will personally inspect each watch for defects and accuracy prior to shipping.
