The Magazine published nearly 300 non-fiction stories across its 28 months in existence as a fortnightly electronic periodical. We produced 58 issues from October 2012 to December 2014 —over 500,000 words from 150 authors.
We'd like to collect our full archives into a high-quality, DRM-free ebook in all the popular electronic-reader and software formats.
We'd also like to tell you about a new periodical we have in the planning stages. Your support will help get it underway.
Update: Feb. 26: Thank you! And a stretch goal with a new reward!
Thank you all for getting us to our goal! Now we can stretch to something more. If we can reach $15,000, I'll produce an "Issue #0" of Old & New, a new periodical that this Kickstarter is helping to get off the ground. Issue #0 will feature Old & New-style articles from The Magazine and some new pieces, and be sent as an ebook free to all backers at any level. It will also be available as a print-on-demand magazine at our cost. Issue #0 will appear in April along with the complete archive ebook.
The extra funds will go to pay reprint fees to writers featured in Issue #0, and commission new articles for that preview issue, as well as let us commission weeks worth of stories for Old & New, and ramp up more quickly towards production of an Issue #1. The plan is starting to come together with the interest shown here.
I've added a reward level specifically for Issue #0, for those who want to help underwrite its costs directly. For $500, you get a full-page sponsorship in Issue #0 to promote an idea, product, or celebrate something wonderful. I'll be happy to design the page, as well. Sponsorships subject to approval, so email first if you want to confirm. (If we don't reach the stretch goal, we'll give you a full page in Issue #1, which will come out after April.)
(If you'd like to sponsor at that level and be a patron of the complete archives book, just pledge the total dollar amount and select the $500 level. I will contact you after the campaign to sort out details.)
Now back to our regularly scheduled campaign…
This ebook collection covers researchers "crying wolf," learning to emulate animal sounds; DIY medical gear, making prosthetics and other tools available more cheaply and to the developing world; a fever in Japan that leads to a new friendship; saving seeds to save the past; the plan to build a giant Lava Lamp in eastern Oregon; Portland's unicycle-riding, Darth Vader mask-wearing, flaming bagpipe player; a hidden library at MIT that contains one of the most extensive troves of science fiction and fantasy novels and magazines in the world; and far, far more.
You can see the complete list of stories on our archives page. Because The Magazine is no longer for sale, funding this project will be the only way to get a complete archive.
We produced a hardcover anthology from our first year in publication; it was gorgeous and made us all very happy. Over 1,250 copies have wended their way around the world. We tried to fund a second-year anthology in a similar way, but failed to reach the minimum needed for the same level of quality, with many backer deterred by the high cost of international shipping.
We've set a more modest goal for this digital edition of the complete archives, as our costs are far lower, mostly involving labor. It's going to be a big book! We need to hire production people, proofreaders, and ebook-conversion gurus to make high-quality editions in PDF, EPUB, and MOBI/KF8 (Kindle compatible).
The book will be several hundred pages long, and contain nearly every article, illustration, and photograph.* There will be no DRM: you can read any format on any device you choose. It may be split into files as volumes to avoid choking ereader software.
We aim to have the ebook completed and distributed to backers by April; if the project funds quickly, we'll produce it faster, potentially by the end of March.
Any funds raised in excess of our production needs will be used to help create our next project: a new magazine and Web site about vintage technology — stuff that's no longer made — that's been sustained, revived, or re-created, and about the people who love it. It will span everything from old farm equipment to toys to analog photography to pinball machines to videogames.
The working title is Old & New, and you can sign up for our announcement list to get more information about it when we fire it up, or follow our blog. As with The Magazine, we will pay all contributors and pay them well. Your backing of this project is the first part in our plan for this next venture.
We will start as a blog and a podcast, and begin commissioning short articles in the near future. Raising funds above the goal in this project will help us accelerate our plans. The ultimate goal is to offer a daily blog, weekly podcast, and a monthly electronic edition, along with a print quarterly and a yearly book.
Pledge to Make This Ebook Possible
Every backer gets the delightful ebook that contains nearly every article we published.* There will be no digital rights management (DRM) on the formats we produce, as we believe in trusting readers, and giving them as much flexibility about where they read as possible.
Backers pledge $20 and receive all the ebook formats (PDF, EPUB, and MOBI for Kindle). At $45, you can also get a copy of our first-year hardcover edition.
Patrons pledge $50 and get our thanks on the dedication page for your extra help in letting us bring this work to everyone plus the ebook. At $75, you can also get a copy of our first-year hardcover edition.
- Angels pledge $250 and are thanked elaborately with a banner in the book and a link, and also receive a high-quality digital print of the cover of their choice, as well as the ebook. The print ships framed in the US, and ships flat elsewhere. You'll also be thanked at the Old & New magazine's Web site.
- New! Angel with a print level: pledge $350 and receive the same thanks as the angel above and our ebook, but also get one of the very few limited-edition, signed, and numbered large-format prints of our first-year cover by Amy Crehore. (13 by 17 inches.)
- New! Sponsor of Old & New Issue #0: for $500, you can sponsor a full page in Issue #0 of Old & New. See the top of this page for the update with all the details.
If your pledge includes the Year One hardcover, we ship immediately on completion of this campaign — it will arrive in less than two weeks after the end of the campaign. (Limited number remaining.)
If you'd like to get more than one copy of the Year One hardcover book , add $20 for each additional copy to your pledge total, which includes shipping within the US. (To Canada, add $5 for shipping; rest of world, add $15.)
9.5% sales tax is already included in all pledges made by those whose payment or shipping address is in Washington State.
*The book will contain all the original content we published, but two to four stories republished from elsewhere will not be included. Nearly all photographs and illustrations will appear.
Risks and challenges
The risks are exceedingly low as we have all the content already written, and a preliminary conversion into layout has already happened. We produced a print book with ebook versions already, and learned from that. Our entire task at hand is on digital production, which we are experienced at.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
