Defragmented is a 3rd-person cyberpunk action-RPG. Immerse yourself in lightning-fast action, futuristic loot, and a pulsing synth soundtrack – all wrapped up in a tribute to the past 40 years of cyberpunk history.

Defragmented's unique style of gameplay combines fast-paced firefights with action-RPG elements found in games like Borderlands and Diablo, all set to a pulsing, neon playlist that combines our favorite electronic genres – synthwave, electro, chiptune, and more. We're blending shooter & RPG game systems to create a deep and rewarding leveling system revolving around challenging gameplay (and a forgiving checkpoint system).

Our story is inspired by settings found in defining cyberpunk works while incorporating elements from some of our personal favorite contemporary classics. We aim to immerse you in a cyberpunk story about cloning, rebellion, and the mysterious city of Entropolis. And yes, there will be hackers!

Features:

  • Cyberpunk aesthetic: Explore a neon, science fiction-fueled Earth inspired by some of the greatest cyberpunk media of the past 40 years.
  • RPG character progression: Level up, unlock new skills and abilities, grow stronger. Shoot, loot, and repeat as your character evolves.
  • Super fast-paced combat: Weapons have real power, and death is certain. Quickly respawn and persist until your enemies have been defeated.
  • Six playable characters: Each with two skill trees for vast customization options.
  • Procedural loot: Collect procedurally-generated futuristic guns and gadgets. Deck out your character and find the rarest gear available.
  • Destructible environments: The environment becomes your own tactical cover. Be careful, though – bullets will rip through lighter objects.
  • Retro-futuristic soundtrack: Pulse-pounding synthwave and heavy electronic beats compel you to fly through each hectic level. Featuring artists heard on Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number.

Defragmented is a top down shooter with action-RPG elements. Run-and-gun through open conference rooms, take cover in tight hallways, and swap out your guns for even stronger ones. Shoot, die, and try again – you'll be able to quickly fly through levels and respawn even faster. You'll need a powerful arsenal and perseverance to overcome your enemy and solve the mysteries of Entropolis.

Defragmented features a procedural weapon generation system. Throughout the game, you'll find unique models of weapons like shotguns, rifles and mesh bombs. With our slotted inventory system, inspired by Borderlands and Diablo, you'll be able to quickly determine whether that new pistol you picked up is more powerful than your last and keep moving.

Equip one main weapon, two side weapons, grenades and two "program cores" to outfit your character exactly the way you want.

Want to upgrade your character's loadout? Back at the $60 tier or higher and you'll receive a set of CYPHERs, exclusive codes that unlock very rare loot. We'll be releasing one or two of these codes to public after release, but this is the only way to get a stockpile of them!

Welcome to the city of Entropolis, a beacon of hope in an otherwise wasted world. Take to the streets, cast under the neon glow of the aerial tramways. Visit the local museums, where the art of hacking and body modification turns patrons into exhibits. If you're feeling brave enough, venture outside the city and take a educational tour of Entropolis' many farming domes. Fans of cyberpunk films like Akira and Blade Runner will feel right at home on these city streets.

Your story in Entropolis revolves around the agendas of the groups that work behind the scenes of everyday life. Why is the council so protective of the city's borders? Is Mai Vermouth, head curator and public nuisance, tied closer to the hacker movement than she's letting on? Where is the city protection force getting their staff from?

There are currently three classes you can play as in Defragmented:

Cyberzerkers take full advantage of modern society's array of physical body modification procedures and miracle medicines. They can take a beating and have improved melee abilities.

Railrunners are a thieving type. When they're not jacking into the city's metro system for a free ride, they're after your physical stuff. Sneak attacks are their speciality.

The Ascended are members of "Via Ascensio", the largest "organized computer modification sub-society" in Entropolis. Better known as hackers, they'll use the environment against their opponents.

Each class has two unique skill trees, which grant your character unique active and passive abilities. You'll also be able to cosmetically change your character by picking a gender and skin color.

Museums, tramways, city streets, and dirty restaurants – you'll explore them all in Defragmented. Environmental storytelling lets you explore Entropolis and piece together the history of its moving parts at your own pace.

There are two types of levels:

  • Large, sprawling levels that push the story forward
  • Smaller, optional levels that explore unique locations throughout Entropolis.

Any level can be replayed in order to gain more experience and better loot, and levels have branching paths and multiple collectables that further flesh out the story of the city and its citizens.

We are planning to create a few hours of content spread across multiple levels of various sizes.

Defragmented's pulsing electronic playlist pulls in a number of renowned electronic musicians, including artists from Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number. We're committed to creating an incredible and varied cyberpunk game soundtrack populated by some of our favorite electro, chiptune, and synthwave artists.

Our current soundtrack includes these artists (both licensed music and original tracks):

With your help, we'll be able to license even more artists and expand the soundtrack to make it even better. Music licensing is one of our biggest expenses/priorities behind the game itself, and we've already committed more than $1500 to audio alone in order to create Defragmented's top-notch soundtrack.

All songs will be included in the final version of the game, and by backing at the $20 level or higher, you'll receive exclusive Early Access to download each track as we license them.

Defragmented will be releasing for Windows, Mac, and Linux through Steam and DRM-free through Humble.

We also will be releasing the game at various points of development to backers who back at the $45 tier through Early Access. You'll get a behind-the-scenes look at Defragmented's development journey and your feedback will help shape the final version of the game! This opportunity is Kickstarter-exclusive, and will NOT be offered after the campaign is finished!

We are exploring opportunities to port Defragmented to consoles. Please support our PC release! If our current campaign does well, we will seriously consider releasing on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and other consoles once we have released the finished game on PC.

Our current goal is $15,000. We are seeking funds through Kickstarter in order to add further polish to the game, license as many artists as we can, and make the final product absolutely incredible.

The chart above gives a rough estimation of where the funds will be going. The majority of our funding will go to development of the game, including any extra features we add post-release. (For reference, we supported our last game, Noir Syndrome, for 7 months after release with eight content updates!)

As we mentioned earlier, a significant amount of our funding will go to licensing artists for the Defragmented soundtrack and creating sound effects. These services go beyond our team's small scope, so we've also included "Legal" costs, which include contracts for properly licensing and paying our musicians and SFX artist.

Our current vision for Defragmented includes everything you see above. By getting us to and above our initial funding goal, we can reveal a number of cool features that will be added to the overall experience (without subtracting from the main game). We don't like when campaigns hold content back either, which is why we've worked hard to make sure our stretch goals are varied and interesting.

Our first stretch goal is for local co-op multiplayer for you and a friend. Play through levels together and fight tougher enemies!

One of our previous games, Noir Syndrome, is a side-scrolling 2D murder mystery adventure game (Windows/Mac/Linux & Android). Dave, the lead developer, spent 10 months developing Noir Syndrome. James, the marketing/business director, joined the team late in development and assisted the game's launch in April 2014. Glass Knuckle Games supported the game for seven months after release with eight content updates.

Risks and challenges

Defragmented has been in development for over nine months, and will be completed regardless of funding goals. We know that games can be pushed back due to unexpected delays, but our main priority is to release a high-quality version of our game on time.

We released two full games on Steam in 2014, and followed up with fans by releasing multiple patches, answering questions on social media, and taking care of the people who play our games.

If any problems arise during development, our backers will be the first to know. We are committed to keeping in touch with our backers through constant community updates and full transparency throughout the development process.
