WHO WE ARE: Glass City Films, the award-winning production company behind the post-apocalyptic survival horror drama Chrysalis, which raised $35k here on Kickstarter and can currently be found on DVD and for download everywhere!

WHAT WE'RE DOING: Making a new short film called Limerence! We've done a lot of pre-production, but aside from the proof-of-concept teaser above, nothing's actually been filmed yet and we need YOU to help us bring this movie to life!

WHAT IT'S ABOUT: Glad you asked...

SYNOPSIS:

PHOEBE, whose powers and perceptions are fueled by her goddess namesake, lives an isolated life in the antique movie palace left to her by her absent parents. Although her brother, ALDEN, is supportive, he is at a loss to be helpful. When TIG, a confident and outgoing woman, turns up to hawk fliers for her play, Phoebe is a bug on a pin, instantly and overwhelmingly caught in Tig's unwitting spell. Phoebe undergoes a private trip down the rabbit hole, her intense longing transmuting into visions and dreams and hysterical jealousy, which culminates in her stunning visual confession of desire and need for connection.

Lucky Otter's Haven - a quick blog mention on our goals in having a thoughtful discussion on limerence

Glass City Films, as a production company, has tackled many challenges, ranging from feature-length zombie films shot in the dead of winter in Gary to documentaries on non-profit organizations all over Chicago tackling big problems in our communities. We’ve filmed in airports and theatres, in abandoned warehouses and on beaches in February and in office spaces and production studios. And we still think it’s safe to say nothing is quite like Limerence, our first stab at crafting a long-form short film.

What’s a long-form short film, you ask? In film festival parlance, it’s a movie somewhere in the 30-45min range, not quite a feature but longer than most short films. And this script demands every minute of that run time. It’s brimming with imagery unlike anything in indie film, it shines a light on a lesser-known mental state, and most excitingly it’s a chance for us to do what we do best: bend genres to produce something wholly original right here in the Midwest.

And we’re asking YOU to be a part of that journey with us again.

Our first Kickstarter campaign for Chrysalis was a smashing success. Trust us: we were as shocked as anyone. But we firmly believe that crowdfunding, even as it’s become over-saturated by a glut of other projects, is the best way for us as filmmakers to reach YOU, our audience; to bring you into the conversation; and to put our faith in you to tell us when you are or aren’t excited about a new project. We believe that this all-or-nothing approach is an important component of making a film: we know how much it will cost to make this film, and we know that we can’t do it for anything less!

So, why should YOU donate to Limerence, to this project? Why should you support us, of all people?

  • We’ve been here before! We’ve been through the wringer of a Kickstarter campaign, from the initial pitch to the fundraising to the finished film and prizes. We’ve learned from our mistakes and taken note of what worked last time, and we know what we’re capable of and what our limitations are. And we know we can hit our target and then some.
  • We’ve done this before! While Limerence is our first go at a long-form short, we’ve produced four (!) feature films, a half-dozen short films, and numerous other commercial and promotional projects. Production on a budget is our specialty, and though this film carries with it a myriad of daunting challenges and locations, we know we’ve achieved the impossible time and time again, and this time is no different.

(If you want concrete evidence of that, check out our proof-of-concept trailer at the top of the page, which we shot in ONE DAY on a micro-budget with all the cast and crew who will be working on the actual film!)

  • We care about what we do! We believe the Midwest is the best place to make movies, and we go out of our way to produce films here with all-Midwest casts and crews. We also take care of those people who work on our projects by properly insuring our productions, paying people fairly for a low-budget film, and making sure everyone on our sets feels welcome every day of production.

YOU, our friends and colleagues and fans of Glass City Films, have seen us grow as artists, as filmmakers, as people over nearly nine years now. Some of you have been around since the very start of our first feature, and some of you may have just discovered us with this trailer.

But you’re all part of this family now. And we hope you enjoy being on this new journey with us, as much as we’ll enjoy having you along for the ride!

Risks and challenges

Every film production has risks. We don't do what we do because it's easy! But here are a few we're most concerned about, and how we plan to address them:

LOCATIONS
Our primary location for the film is an old movie theater, where almost 90% of the film takes place. We've chosen two, the Pickwick Theatre in Park Ridge and the Music Box Theater in Chicago, to serve as that single location! However, in addition to being expensive to rent, both are working theaters with limited availability during the day, and we would probably get no more than 8 hours per day of production time, as opposed to a typical 10-12 hour day. To that end, while a typical short indie film would have a production schedule of about 4-5 days, we've extended ours to about 6-8 days, and have negotiated with both theaters' management for discounts on pricing and to make sure we don't encroach on their screening times! We're also looking at times of the year to film when the theaters would be less busy, such as the mid-spring or early fall.

REWARD DELIVERY
With our previous campaign, it took us far longer to deliver backer rewards than we had originally estimated. Some of the rewards were incredibly difficult to produce, some had to be bought in bulk, and shipping costs were considerably more expensive than we budgeted. We've remedied that on this go-round by selecting more portable prizes and more digital downloads - it's the 21st century and we're just living in it, folks - but, simply, we've also been through the process once and it's just far less intimidating to us now!

SCHEDULE
The longer shoot time, from a logistics standpoint, means more food, more parking, more general organization on a day-to-day basis. In essence, it makes this long-form short film feel more like a feature film. Thankfully, we've done that before, and so while we know how daunting that can be, we also know where to shop, how to communicate with cast and crew effectively, and how to streamline the production process to make us as efficient as possible in the short time we have each day!
