Backers at reward levels that include shippable items: Kickstarter does not give us your address! After every campaign, we need to collect your shipping information. If you don't use our Pledge Manager to tell us, we don't know where to send your rewards!
Shortly after the campaign ends, our backers will get an email with a link to our Very Necessary Pledge Manager at BackerKit. Please be patient, it will take at least a week for us to get everything finalized. We will post an update here when our BackerKit page is live.
Backers who fill out their pledge manager before a certain date (to be announced, watch our updates) will be able to get their books shipped to them straight from the printer, which is really great for everybody! Thank you! --Kaja Foglio
We now have a central page on our web site where we keep track of all of our Kickstarter campaigns! We also have a contact form, in case you need to get in touch with us about an old campaign. We want to make sure everyone gets their rewards!
Girl Genius is an ongoing story featuring adventure, romance, and Mad Science! It follows the adventures of Agatha Heterodyne, the last of a notorious family in which the spark of mad science runs strong. We call it a "Gaslamp Fantasy," by which we mean that it takes place in an old-fashioned, Vernian world of airships, monsters, and wild inventions.
Girl Genius is published as a webcomic and graphic novel series, and also as a series of prose novels. The graphic series is updated three times a week on our web site at girlgeniusonline.com. When we have enough pages, roughly once a year, we run a Kickstarter campaign and publish a collection. The Girl Genius graphic novel series has won three Hugo Awards for Best Graphic Story!
Kings and Wizards is Book Four of the Second Journey of Agatha Heterodyne–and the seventeenth book in the overall series. If you're new to the Girl Genius comics, The Second Journey is a great place to jump in!
We are Phil and Kaja Foglio, creators of the ongoing adventure story Girl Genius. We are ready to make the print version of Girl Genius: Kings and Wizards, the latest in our self-published series of Hugo award-winning graphic novels. The book will be printed as a trade paperback, with a short run of special hardcover volumes that feature a lovely "puffy" padded cover.
We used to offer pre-orders for upcoming books through our online store; which helped us pay for the up-front costs of printing the books. It also allowed us to get an idea of how many books we should be making in the first print run, especially of the limited-edition hardcover. Now we use Kickstarter, which really streamlines this process. We learn and get better at it every time we do a campaign. You can see information about all our previous campaigns on the Kickstarter Information page at girlgeniusonline.com.
As ever, we like to start with a tiny little immediate reward. Here is a special icon–just for fun. We hope you enjoy it, and use it to spread the word. We are very bad at social media, so any help we can get is appreciated!
The contents of the different reward levels are listed to the right. The stars of the show are, of course, the books. In addition, all backers getting a book will also receive a campaign-exclusive bookplate, signed by authors Phil & Kaja Foglio. We've found a source for archival, acid free, self-adhesive 3"x4"book plates. This time, they're already printed, and I've just finished signing every one of them!
Now that we have funded and met some stretch goals, each signed bookplate now comes in the Envelope of Madness! What is the "Envelope of Madness?" It's the stack of flat extras we'll be shipping along with each pledge level that contains a book. At this time, it consists of:
- The signed bookplate
- One Girl Genius poster
- One 2" wasp eater sticker
- One Kings & Wizards bookmark
- One checklist/TPU student ID
- One temporary trilobite tattoo
- One art card featuring Agatha and Colette
- One Girl Genius sticker featuring Agatha
OTHER LEVELS AND REWARDS:
PDFS: For those who either do not want a physical book or plan to get it from their favorite real-life book store later, yet still want to support the project, we have some lower-level rewards, starting with a simple "Tips Jar." All our backers, regardless of level, will receive access to our commemorative downloadable computer wallpaper, which we'll reveal at the end of the campaign.
TRAVEL STICKERS: At a slightly higher level, we have a new set of travel stickers! This year's stickers are from Nouveau Paris, The Winged Victory Airship Line (from Londinium to Paris), and the Mopey Tortoise Air Freight company.
Next, we have this year's campaign-exclusive Life of the Party medal! It's a substantial metal pin-back affair, offered in a choice of silvery or brassy tones. Since we don't yet have actual samples from the manufacturer, we have this lovely concept art, rendered by Cheyenne.
Below are examples of some of our medals from previous campaigns. As you can see, the finals wind up a lot more 3D than Phil's 2D drawings...
PATCHES: Some levels also include our limited-edition Kings and Wizards patch.
The campaign has funded! Hooray! Now, we're able to set things up so that we can offer add-ons. So, if you're after extra medals, books or patches, you'll be able to add those on after the campaign, when our BackerKit survey goes out.
Funding also means it's time for us to roll out this year's Envelope of Madness! (You can read more about the EoM above, under Backer Rewards.)
I've looked over the way BackerKit handles add-ons, and I have good news! Now all backer levels will have access to our post-campaign pledge management system! This is where you can add on all kinds of things, including extra campaign medals, patches and Envelopes of Madness. Additional shipping, if any becomes necessary, will be calculated in the pledge management system. (It has to do with weight and postal categories.)
Nota bene: We will have the BackerKit store open for a while after the campaign, but the campaign exclusives: the medals, patches and Envelopes of Madness, will be slightly more expensive at that point. So if you think you'll want one of our exclusives later, back now!
And now, onward to the stretch goals:
In addition to the Signed Bookplate, the Envelope of Madness will now come with (but not contain, because the folded poster still doesn't fit in the envelope,) a promotional poster for the book!
It's a cute 2" round sticker, and it will now go in the Envelope of Madness!
Just what it says: we'll make sure to get everyone above the $10 level a free download link for the PDF of the book.
Deluxe medals! At this level, each of our medals will come with an extra insert to make it even more magnificent! They’ll be part of the whole thing when it ships, but you can still easily take them apart and customize them with past medals and inserts.
We've been out of the brassy trilobite pins for a couple of years, so it's high time we make more!
And here it is! You can click this link to download the zipped PDF file.
At this level, we'll also be able to bring several of our more popular patches back–like the Glorious Day for Science and Weirdness from Above. We've been out of them for a while, now. Since they have a quick turnaround time, I'll be able to list them as add-ons.
Finally, we also have a special downloadable wallpaper (in addition to the campaign exclusive wallpaper mentioned above.) This wallpaper is a freebie for all of you who have taken the time to come to our campaign page, whether or not you back the campaign. Thank you for visiting! There are five versions of the wallpaper, in the following sizes: 2560x1600, 1920x1080, 1600x1200, 1024x1024, 600x800. Click the image below to download a zipped file of all five.
Risks and challenges
There is always the possibility that some unforeseen problem will slow our delivery schedule. For instance: In our last campaign, we used BackerKit for the first time, and I (Kaja) had trouble figuring out some of the setup. This delayed our surveys, and that delayed shipping. This time, I am still using BackerKit, because now that I know what I'm doing, I know that it is a wonderful system. So this time, at least, our backer survey should be ready to go out as soon as the campaign ends...but the possibility of new things to trip over always looms.
There is also the ever-present possibility of manufacturing delays. Printing delays on the book are extremely unlikely: the cover and pages are at the printer and ready for printing, and unless the whole run comes off the press completely purple and has to be redone, we're on a set timeline.
We are very experienced publishers, this is our seventeenth volume in this series, alone. That doesn't mean that delays can't happen, but it does mean that it would only be a delay, never a cancellation of the project.
Secondary items like medals and patches can sometimes hit snags that delay their manufacture, but we always get them out in the end. One of our items from the City of Lightning, a metal fob with a portrait of Agatha, has had to go back to the factory for multiple revisions, and we even had to switch manufacturers. It is nearly finished now, and you can follow its progress on our information page here: http://www.girlgeniusonline.com/info/kickstarter/kickstarter_vol15.php That's the only thing that hasn't finished shipping, and it is a very unusual situation.
So, in the event of design trouble, our project would only be delayed, never cancelled.
We try to take good care of all our backers. You can see an overview of all our past campaigns, as well as our customer service contact form, here:
