After all having used iPads, our team realized there was a common problem experienced by most iPad users: iPads are not easy or comfortable to use in bed. While using our iPads laying down, we experienced arm fatigue, and often resorted to uncomfortable positions. We took this idea to High School Startup, and the GiraffeStand was born!
The GiraffeStand is a movable iPad (or other tablet) accessory that attaches to your existing headboard or bed stand. It allows you to read books, watch videos, and surf the web without experiencing the arm fatigue and discomfort that comes with holding up your iPad in bed.
The joint between the clamp and first arm on the GiraffeStand allows you to move the arm both vertically and horizontally, providing a full range of motion and ultimate adjustability! The clamp allows for easy and painless installation to your headboard, and the rubber coating ensures no damage will be done. Since many of us have cases on our iPads, we decided to make the holder pliable, fitting both naked and cased iPads! The GiraffeStand also fits other tablets and eReaders, including the Nexus 7&10, and Kindles and Nooks!
We built a prototype out of four 18 inch U-channel aluminum beams, four springs, two aluminum joints, and a polymer two piece clamp that attaches to the lower arm. The arms support the weight of the iPad through a simple spring system that allows for the arm to be easily moved while otherwise holding the iPad steady.
The feedback we got from our initial prototype was that 1) We need to offer the GiraffeStand in different colors and 2) We need to let the iPad swivel more so people don’t have to adjust the arm. We took this advice and applied it to our existing GiraffeStand.
Levels of Contribution
The base level Giraffestand comes in a brushed aluminum finish, and is available at the $60 pledge level. For only $60, you’ll never have to compromise your iPad viewing experience ever again.
The GiraffeStand Pro comes in anodized black/brown/silver colors. The anodized finish is more attractive and more scratch resistant so you can ensure your GiraffeStand looks perfect for years to come. Since the iPad speakers are on the bottom right, the sound is projected away from you when you’re laying down and watching a movie. To solve this problem, the GiraffeStand Pro comes with a sound-reflector which reflects the sound back towards you, maximizing the audio coming from your iPad’s built in speakers. In addition, we’ll include a 6 foot USB to 30 pin connector cable so you can charge your iPad while using your GiraffeStand Pro to ensure you never have to get up during movie, gaming, or reading marathons.
The Giraffehead is our take on the mounting bracket. Instead of having a boring triangle bracket, we decided to replace it with a GiraffeHead!
In order to make the GiraffeStand a reality, we have laid out a plan which we hope we can follow to come up with a great final product.
November 2012 -January 2013 We're going to spend the next two months prototyping to come up with the best possible GiraffeStand.
February - April 2013: Figure out manufacturing logistics and begin manufacturing process
April-May 2013: Finish manufacturing, ship out rewards
How is the GiraffeStand made?
We will be purchasing most of the raw materials, and plan to cut out the arms with a water jet cutter at a local business. We plan to order some of the iPad holders, and then once all of the pieces are completed we will assemble the GiraffeStand in our shop.
Our goal is to create at least 50 GiraffeStands, which will take $4,000. We want to be able to start production of the GiraffeStand during February 2013, and be able to ship the GiraffeStands starting May 2013. We plan on using this money for prototyping, materials, and manufacturing.
We'd like to thank Jeremy Guillory, John Sperry, and all of our wonderful mentors at HighSchool Startup for guiding us through this process. We'd also like to thank the team at Neato Media for helping us with our video. Finally, we'd like to thank Gage Furniture for allowing us to film in their store.
Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
We see two important challenges. The first is that we've already created prototypes, but scaling up to making lots of GiraffeStands will be something we've never done before. We've tried to mitigate this risk by working with our high schools to secure time in the shop to make the arms, and by establishing a relationship with the local sheet metal fabricator where the joints and Giraffe Heads will be made.
The second challenge is that we are using a polyurethane casting process to build the clamp that holds the GiraffeStand to beds or other surfaces. Polyurethane is a great material because it won't mark surfaces and is very durable. The down side is that there is a learning curve to doing the castings properly. While we are working under the supervision of mentors experienced with polyurethane casting, we realize that it will still take some time to master.
Yes! We were able to modify our design to accomodate other tablets, including the Nexus 7 and 10, Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.0 - 10.1, Asus Transformer Series, Kindle line, Nook line, and more! If your tablet's not on that list, but is between 7" to 10", the GiraffeStand should work well with it.
$4,000 is our goal. All along, our target has been to build 50 GiraffeStands. When we were making our video a few months ago, we thought that would take $10,000, but we've figured out how to make the same high-quality product for much less money now. We intend to update our video, but right now we're laser-focused on prototyping and testing.
