"From ancient times, the Constellations above us have been deemed responsible of a great part of man's destiny, and have been asked for guidance or blessings".
Glow in the dark Constellation Dice were designed last year and found encouraging success. It's originality has been recognized by the world record holder dice collector Mr. Kevin Cook, and the project is going to be featured in the art photo book "Dice – Rendezvous with Randomness" by Måns Danneman (to be soon published by Åskfågeln).
They are still in demand, but not many are left. This campaign will provide good company to your First Edition Ptolemaic Constellation Dice (Northern Sky), while offering new backers the chance to grab the very last available First Edition, along with all new designs.
This campaign has been in the making for one year...
...Have you got space in your collection?
Please note: The rewards launched when the campaign started do not include the dice unlocked with Stretch Goals. Suggested rewards for new backers are:
- €9 Sample Dice Colors (4 dice, 3 options)
- €18 Cartographer's Bundle (8 dice, 2 options)
- €24 Astronomer's Polyhedral set (9 dice)
- €35 Collector's Night Black Polyhedral set (12 dice)
- €65 Master's SUPERSAVER Bundle (30 dice)
To get one of all available dice versions (design / color / finishing) select the €22 One Deluxe Anniversary Set and increase your pledge by €30 to upgrade it with polyhedrals and the Northern Sky dice in light blue color.
Most rewards over €22 are sent with tracked shipping, but that does not reach all destinations (e.g. Australia, Norway...). If your nation is missing in the list, and you are ok with untracked shipping, please contact me because it may be possible to ship that way.
Now available... the full polyhedral set:
The sets will be made in a limited edition of only 500 sets per color, unless sufficient funding allows for a larger manufacturing quantity.
Celebrating 450 Years of Discovery and Exploration
2017 will mark the 40th anniversary of the Voyager spacecrafts, that allowed us to admire Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, and now are travelling out of the solar system.
It is interesting to point out that "Voyager" actually means a traveller to a distant land (especially one who travels by sea) as 2017 will also be the uncelebrated 450th anniversary of the European exploration of the Southern Hemisphere.
In 1567 Álvaro de Mendaña de Neira reached the Solomon Islands, and very soon afterwards a new set of constellations was created to help navigators, and honor new instruments of science such as the pendulum clock and the telescope.
The first new dice will be 16mm d6 like the one before, showing the constellations of the Southern Hemisphere (including the Southern Cross), and the Magellanic Clouds. A glow-in-the-dark option of Constellation Dice is available.
Due to incredibly high demand and overwhelming positive feedback, and since a new color has been added to the available options, also the original limited edition Ptolemaic Constellation (Northern Sky) Dice will be reprinted IN THE NEW COLOR ONLY.
If you choose Morning Sky color for your Constellation Dice, half will be Southern Sky, while the other half will be Northern Sky.
If you want a mixed set, to add more dice to your reward select one option from the list available in the FAQ at the bottom of this page:
"What are the available options to get Extra Dice?".
I have added a convenient €6 one to obtain both Constellation Dice finishing (standard and glow-in-the-dark).
In the following years, as a result of improvements Galileo Galilei made to the telescope, with a magnifying capability of 20×, he was able to see celestial bodies more distinctly than was ever possible before. This allowed Galilei to discover in either December 1609 or January 1610 what came to be known as the Galilean moons.
The second new dice will be a couple of d10 featuring the planets, and all their 9 moons discovered before 1700 only by using optical means.
These dice do not glow in the dark. Prototypes should be ready soon. Update: if you get a total of at least four Solar System Voyager d10 (in your chosen reward, or by pledging extra), one couple will glow-in-the-dark. This doesn't apply for retailers bundles.
At zero sides you'll see the sun and our moon. Pluto is still included as the ninth planet, although it is now classified as a dwarf planet (one in a growing series).
The third new dice will be a 16mm d6 with little stars that can be used as pips counting from 1 to 6, while the big sparkling stars, spanning two sides each, make the dice compatibile with Fudge/FATE, for those who play by that ruleset (please check update #6 to learn more about Fudge).
These dice do not glow in the dark. Prototypes should be ready soon.
Although they feature no recognizable constellations, these dice can be used as a background starfield to Constellation Dice, while allowing to reproduce your favourite asterism... as sung in the first inspiration of this project, Björk's song "Desired Constellation":
The manufacturing of the dice will start in January 2017 as soon as the funds and the surveys are collected. According to the factory schedule, about three months would be needed for completing the order, which is much more complex than the initial plan of making only a couple of dice types in two colors. The sorting and packaging of the dice should take two weeks, and shipment about three weeks, allowing for delivery a couple months before the Voyagers' anniversary in August 2017.
Chart of the Reward Tiers
Kickstarter doesn't allow multiple pledges and I had to publish several different reward tiers trying to make everyone happy. The main offering including all the new dice is the Anniversary Set, to which the Collector's Bundles add the original first edition Constellation Dice in Night Black and Sky Blue color. The Deluxe versions include also glow-in-the-dark dice, along with the Scout's Bundles, the Master's SUPERSAVER Bundle and the Cartographer's Bundle which offer a partial, inexpensive selection of the available dice. If you value quantity, get the Five Friends SUPERSAVER Bundle, a good deal for retailers.
The following chart displays the content of the main sets.
It is also available for download in printable PDF format.
The costs do not include shipping because it may vary. If you need further help to pick the best one for you, scroll down to the FAQ: "How do I choose the right bundle?" at the bottom of this page, or just ask. I'm here to help.
Extending your reward tier with dice unlocked by Stretch Goals
- The Extended Sets where created to let all those who backed the project until the Black Friday weekend to get all the current Stretch Goals in one go. You can now access these bundles too.
- You can only get the Extended set for the reward you have picked. The Extended Collector's bundles are grayed out because the corresponding reward tiers are all taken.
- To upgrade your set to Extended, increase your pledge by the amount in the yellow box and contact me.
- According to the following list, for a couple of Extended Sets you will get more dice than specified in the sidebar description.
- The green tabs indicate that some dice of a type glow in the dark. To learn the exact quantities, please refer to the full reward chart above.
Need extra dice? How to order more.
If your chosen reward level includes the "Need extra dice?" line, it means there is enough room for some more dice in your envelope, at the same shipping cost. A list of the possible options is available in the FAQ at the bottom of this page ("What are the available options to get Extra Dice?").
Example: If you would like to add a couple of glowing d6 and one more couple of d10 to the One Anniversary Set reward (€15), select it and specify your shipping destination (i.e. €6 for Europe), then add the necessary amounts to the pledge:
€21 for One Anniversary Set (that is, €15 + €6 for shipping to Europe)
+ €11 for 2 Southern Sky d6 and 2 Solar System d10
€32 is the total pledge amount you would have to type in.
Please note that if you pledge extra for rewards that do not include the "Need extra dice?" line, I will consider that as a donation to the project.
As the project progresses, these Stretch Goals will be unlocked:
€ 6000: Free glow-in-the-dark paint on one of multiple d10 sets
- if your reward includes more than 2 Solar System Voyager dice (at least four d10) one couple will be upgraded to glow-in-the-dark free of charge!
- if you selected a pledge level with the line "Need Extra Dice" and will add more d10 as an extra, getting at least two couples of d10 (four dice) upgrading your pledge to meet the above condition, one couple will be upgraded to glow-in-the-dark free of charge!
- this is valid for backers who increase their pledge before the counter hits €6000.
- this doesn't apply to retailers bundles.
€ 7000: Free glow-in-the-dark paint as above (see update #10)
The first Stretch Goal has been extended until the end of the campaign.
€ 8000: One extra color option, also valid for the Northern Sky set
You will be able to specify your favorite color for both Constellation dice (d6) and Desired Constellation dice (fudge d6), and you will be able to specify which colors will glow in the dark if you are getting such dice.
If you choose Morning Sky color for your Constellation Dice, half will be from the Northern Sky set, while the other half will be Southern Skies.

The available options for the Constellation dice are:
- all Sky Blue

You will be able to specify exactly what you want from what is available.

1 Constellation dice d6 (Southern Sky, or light blue Northern Sky) for all others.
The color will be random, but I will try to match your set when packaging.
High quality, low price (for now). Where is the catch?
- This is actually several campaigns in one, launched together to offer great value to a broad audience, and let you save on combined shipping, expecially now that we have funded a full polyhedral set.
- By bundling the dice their cost get averaged out, even if some versions are quite expensive (the glow-in-the-dark paint is applied by hand, almost doubling the manufacturing price).
- I am in contact with a few shops around the world that are booking my dice in advance at a very convenient price. This helped me lower the initial funding goal.
- I have kept the rewards cost at a minimum, to thank you all for helping me make this project a reality. To do this I had to order about 1000 of each design (mass production), and I will pay for the unclaimed dice with my own money.
Since the funding goal will only be enough to cover manufacturing and shipping expenses, this convenience had to come at a cost.
Any remaining dice after the campaign will be sold at retail price so don't miss this heavily discounted chance (there is no plan to reprint the dice once they are all gone).
This campaign is EU / U.S.A. friendly
Backers the United States will not have to pay any custom fee since the shipping will be taken care of by a local distribution company. Moreover shipping to the United States will be tracked in most cases, even when the reward specifies "Untracked Shipping".
Backers from Europe will enjoy a little discount for untracked shipping as the rewards will be sent from Italy.
To get these dice after the campaign please subscribe to my newsletter and you will be notified when they will be available for purchase.
Risks and challenges
I am an experienced designer and this is my second crowdfunding campaign. The first one was delivered in time with regular updates and positive comments from happy backers at https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/constellation-dice
The designs for this new project are ready and all fees and expenses have been taken into account, with a little margin for unexpected ones.
As soon as they are ready I shall receive and publish here pictures of the actual prototypes of the dice (the main image shows renderings, and your feedback is welcome, so it is possible the final product will appear slightly different).
A quality output is expected because the bulk of the manufacturing will be taken care of by Q Workshop in Poland. This includes the d10 Voyager Dice and the Southern Sky Constellation Dice. The d6 Desired Constellation Dice will be manufactured in China with a custom mold, to allow the special design crossing the corners.
The main risk in a project like this is delays, but I have already taken into account one spare month. If all goes well, you will receive your rewards well in advance of the Voyagers' 40th anniversary in August, but probably later than the reported date of April 2017 (which didn't take into account the Stretch Goal manufacturing of full polyhedral sets).
The second risk is that some envelope may get lost during shipping.
Untracked shipping is quite safe, inexpensive and reaches more locations. I have successfully sent hundreds of rewards this way last year. If anyway an envelope gets lost I will only be able to provide a proof of shipping, and tracking up to the moment it leaves the italian borders; for this reason I have provided the option for tracked shipping on more costly rewards.
It is your choice to pick tracked or untracked shipping, as I will not be able to resend more than a few packages (first come, first served) given the very limited budget I could allocate for that.
I will do my best to help as usual, and I will try to locate both tracked and untracked shippings, as often it is just a matter of time before they arrive. Anyway I won't be able to resend/refund everyone in the unlikely event that a relevant number of packages is lost.
Please note that most the rewards destined to the U.S.A. shall be shipped with tracking from inside the country, making the risk even less.
The main challenge at the moment is to reach enough backers to reach all the Stretch Goals, the sooner the better.
I trust you with this :)Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
