Hi! We’re Hannah Alexander and Ginny Di, and this is Centaur of Attention, a collaborative project that celebrates diversity through art and cosplay! Our goal is to create a line of centauress inspired costume designs and show you how to bring them to life through detailed tutorials.
This Kickstarter has two objectives: First, to deliver brand new centauress designs, illustrations, and photos to fill that equine-shaped hole in your heart and inspire your cosplays. Second, to deliver a comprehensive, step-by-step tutorial on how to craft your own walking centauress costume.
These two things will be compiled into the Centaur of Attention book, which will be available both digitally and in print!
With 20 years of drawing experience and two cosplay design books under her belt already, Hannah is used to designing costumes for an audience of over 100,000 people and is up for the challenge of adding some extra legs into the mix!
The centauress designs for Centaur of Attention will include both 4-legged and 2-legged variations on the costume to suit every cosplayer's needs. The book will also feature sketches of the back of the costume, notes on the details of each design, and suggestions for materials and patterning to help you bring each centauress to life.
While the designs were originally inspired by Disney's Fantasia, it was important to both of us that Centaur of Attention include the diversity of bodies and people that the film failed to portray. And of course, regardless of the appearance of each centauress in the designs, we would love to see people of all races, genders, and body types create these costumes! The design portions of the book will include all the information you need to adjust these designs to suit your own interests and abilities.
If we reach our goal, the book will include three designs: Rose, Wisteria, and Delphinium. Each stretch goal that we reach beyond our initial funding goal will unlock an additional centauress design, which will be added to the book alongside the original three.
Since Ginny designed her first walking centaur costume, there has been a strong demand for thorough instructions on how to build something similar. In the years since, she has completely overhauled the design in order to create a lighter weight, easier to build, easier to wear costume with a simple but realistic gait. With the help of this Kickstarter, the much-requested construction tutorial can finally be completed and shared!
While the costume may seem intimidating when looking at the finished product, it doesn't require very many particular skills or specific tools to create. With the step-by-step guidance that will be offered in Centaur of Attention, anyone should be able to construct this costume, even without access to a workshop or power tools!
The book will include information on what materials you'll need and where to find them, instructions on how to take your measurements and apply them to your build, and then an easy-to-follow, step-by-step walkthrough with photos and diagrams to show you how to build and decorate your very own centaur body.
If we reach our goal, the book will include complete instructions on building a centaur body. With each stretch goal that we might achieve, additional tutorials will be added to the book for accessories. Our first stretch goal will unlock instructions on patterning and sewing centaur leggings, and the second stretch goal will unlock a tutorial for hoof shoes.
Much of the work is already done: Hannah has laid out concepts, color schemes, mood boards, and sketches for a whole herd of centauresses, and Ginny has been working on and off for over a year to retool her walking centaur design to make it the best it can be. If we meet our goal, we’ll get to work finalizing designs, crafting costumes, formatting the book, and fulfilling rewards!
We plan to start delivering rewards in Autumn of 2019. We’ll keep you updated along the way as we work through each step!
The funding provided by this Kickstarter campaign will allow us to execute this project to a quality level that we would otherwise be unable to meet. The money from your pledges will go towards the design, development, and production of the book itself. Expenses include:
- Materials for the construction of the costume(s) built and photographed for the book
- Compensation for design development, tutorial development, photography, and graphic design
- Printing expenses for the book
- Costs for reward fulfillment and delivery (packing and shipping, prints, etc.)
Risks and challenges
Since Hannah has already produced two books and hundreds of designs and Ginny has already designed and crafted a walking centaur costume, the basics of this project are firmly within our grasp! The primary risk will be that, depending on how book production goes, our previous commitments (such as both of us running active Patreon accounts), and whether or not we reach our stretch goals, the timeline for the book may need to stretch to accommodate changes. To prevent this, we've built extra time into our reward fulfillment predictions to account for any hang-ups we may encounter.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
