TALES OF A FOURTH GRADE LESBO: TAKE 2
Tales of a Fourth Grade Lesbo follows a group of preteen girls through the bedrooms and classrooms of the early 1990s. A play on the title of the beloved Judy Blume novel Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing, Gina Young's dance/theater piece with additional writing by Amanda-Faye Jimenez explores the more subtle forms of homophobia pervasive in American elementary schools. With repurposed pop songs, classic movie parodies and choreographed dance numbers, of course!
We already have the costumes.
We already have the awesome cast.
We already had a fantastic, sold out debut at Highways Performance Space in June 2012. Now we just need the funds to do it all again!
$3,000 is the bare minimum we need to get this show back on its feet, but we could definitely use more. $3,000 will cover just the bare-bones basics:
- hiring a professional lighting designer
- paying a sound operator
- making new postcards and posters to promote the show
- renting rehearsal space big enough for 12 dancers
- providing all of the cast and crew with a small stipend
If we exceed our goal, any additional funds received will go to improving the costumes and sets -- let's be real, at the moment, there ARE no sets :) -- increasing our promotional reach, and providing free tickets to at-risk queer youth in the Los Angeles area.
Risks and challenges
We are facing particular challenges as a result of the postponement of this show due to the censorship/banning issue we faced with the Pasadena Playhouse.
Happily, the situation was resolved amicably and we now have the theater's full support. However, we lost our eligibility to apply for certain grants we'd been counting on, and we also lost the momentum that comes with an extended run of a show. Because this production will now be considered a re-mount instead of an extended run, we practically have to start from scratch in terms of rehearsal time, design team and marketing. However, the cast of this show has been so enthusiastic and so dedicated that I have no doubt that the re-mount of the show will be even BETTER than the first run!
It would be amazing if some of our supporters-- from all over the country and the world, who flooded the Pasadena Playhouse with letters of support on our behalf-- could now make a donation, no matter how small, to help us put on the best production we can.
