NOTE: The primary guitar model (OO Model), that is seen in our first two videos has been upgraded to a hand-made model designed and modelled to our specifications. We determined that the OO Model (in this video) looked to much like another popular model instrument. The guitar in this video also shows a dot inlay, which is aesthetically not very cool (once our inlays are also embedded). The actual guitars that you will receive are described below and will not have any dot inlays. The videos do however provide a very suitable explanation of the system.

Our Premium Model

Our Premium Model is the Gillis Guitar with patented Gillis Capo System. It includes capo inlays up to (and including) the 9th fret. Five single string capos and nine installed inserts are included. The guitar has been hand made to our specifications and materials and the capos are fabricated by hand on a CNC machine here in Halifax, NS. Our inserts have been meticulously engineered and are moulded from a mixture of reinforced plastics.

The Gillis Single String Capo Guitar and System provides its user with literally billions of new open tuning possibilities! This guitar is for creative, innovative musical explorers. If you are a basic player that simply wants to learn the songs of other artists, this guitar may not be the instrument for you, but if you are an adventurer that wants to create new sounds, chords, songs and harmonies, then you will be glad to know that you can call Gillis Guitars and our capo system home. Designed by a guitar player for guitar players, our novel mechanical system harkens back to pre-digital days. Our system is a new tool that should be included in every advanced-to-professional guitarists tool box.

When first receiving your instrument you will likely want to make sure that it is set up to your own preferred playing style, string gauges, etc. Our system is designed to keep intonation as intact as possible while the capos are engaged. You will notice that the capos place their force directly beside each fret to prevent the string from bending and going sharp, however depending on your preferred set-up slight tuning adjustments may be required in some instances.

It can take a person a few hours of practice before the engaging of the capos becomes as seamless as you see me do it in the videos. If you follow my instructions and are patient, this should not be much of a concern once you get the hang of it. Trust me that the benefits of having the capos designed in their small unobstructive size, is well worth the trade off.  Learning how to properly engage and disengage them simply takes a bit of practice, but if you comprehend the benefits, you are likely no stranger to practicing your instrument.

Basic Dreadnaught Model

For the price sensitive explorer, we have the ALL SOLID WOOD Basic Dreadnaught Model. This lovely lady has capo inlays up to the 12th fret for billions of exploratory tunings at a more affordable price. Five single string capos and twelve installed inserts are included.

All Solid Dreadnaught with 12-Frets of Gillis Single String Capo System

Below we have a C Major with a G in the base open tuning on the left, and an Em(add9) open tuning on the right. The scale shapes and patterns that I am familiar with can still be used and I can get my fingers in around these capos to create really interesting sounds. If the chord is in the key, no open notes are off limits. With no open strings off limits, fast and/or more creative phrasing becomes easy as 3.141592

A Single String Capo holder in included with every instrument. A mild adhesive is used to attach the holder to this area of the instrument, which I have deemed its most practical location. At your request I can simply not adhere it to this location if so desired. I have personally not found that it effects the tone, but perhaps this could be debated.

Other Fun Facts!

Here is a video of one of the actual dreadnaught models in action. This guitar has only 4 capo inlays.  Your guitar will have 12.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Will I feel the special inserts when I play? Not really. Most people say "Oh, I can't even tell that the inserts are there!"  We modified our design a number of times to make the guitar play as if there was no modification. Generally, when the capos are not engaged you will be playing an all solid, hand-crafted wooden instrument made from superior materials for a traditional performing experience.

Will you be making a less expensive model of guitar?  We hope to eventually get there, but presently it is not a logical fit.  For example each capo cost $75 to machine and five are included with each set, plus the inserts, holder, moulds (for inserts) and labour expenses. To put a $600-$700 system on a $200 cheap guitar does not really make sense for anyone. Down the road we may find a way, but our design is presently too complex to fabricate with moulding technology that would bring down the price...believe me, we thought about it.                                                                                                                                                                    Why didn't you simply licence your technology to a popular well-known manufacturer or have them build you an OEM model?  Trust me, we did think of this and tried for years to collaborate with other manufacturers, but it was not in the cards.  They are highly risk averse to trying something new and unproven. We also approached over 100 North American manufacturers to have them supply us with our own OEM instruments, but nobody was interested in selling us guitars (mind blown!) and so began the difficult search for high quality hand-made overseas suppliers. We found the best and are very happy.

Stay tuned for our next venture, which will include our patented modular analogue guitar pedals!  https://patents.google.com/patent/US9348365B2/en?inventor=John+Archie+Gillis

Strong magnetic force holds the units together and both data and power are transferred through the systems!  No more cables, but the benefits of actual contact points is maintained.

Risks and challenges

We plan to deliver our product within a 6 month time period, however there are sometimes occasional challenges that may occur with our suppliers...for various reasons. A guitar once promised to me in four months took 6 months to deliver. That being said we have been assured that such delays will not occur with future orders, particularly of larger sizes. This has yet to be tested, but we hope any supplier concerns that we had, have been remedied.

    A Song for You!

I will write you an instrumental song in the tuning of your choice. You can name it or have it commissioned for that special person. If you pick 6 random numbers between 0 and 12 or tell me your favourite chord, I will write the song with capos in those specific locations....and we will see what happens. You will receive a digital copy of the music and credits if it is ever released to the world. Copyright will be retained by Archie Gillis, but you (a true patron of the arts), will have free reign of its use for any non-commercial purpose.
