About

About the Gilded Suns Campaign Setting

Gilded Suns is a Victorian and steampunk-inspired campaign setting for the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game.  Gilded Suns is a world with a late nineteenth-century feel, where great powers vie for influence and dominance against each other.  It is a mostly human world where huge airships - inspired by the pre-dreadnoughts of the 1890s - sail the skies, cowboys battle bandits in the deserts, and secret cults search for magical secrets that should never be revealed.  Engineers invent new gadgets, and guns are common.  Far to the east, the fading days of samurai clash against rampant colonialism.  And in the frontier, players have the opportunity to found their own kingdoms.

About the Book

We envision an 8 1/2-inch by 11-inch hardback book with a full-color poster map of the main campaign .  We plan on using a web-based printing company to make a limited print run of around 250 copies.  We have a rough draft already, but we need funding to commission artwork and print the books.  We will also be selling it on DrivethruRPG.com as an electronic copy with print on demand as an option.

The book will feature one new race, the half-catfolk, five new base classes, dozens of new firearms, rules for cannons with up to an 18-inch bore, revised rules for mass combat, stat blocks for over a dozen airships, and a detailed gazetteer of the main campaign area.

Who We Are

Golden Celestial Games is a startup tabletop games publishing company based out of Dayton, Ohio, USA.  We are a father-and-son partnership dedicated to making the best games possible.  We are very enthusiastic about world building, and Ben has been crafting worlds for over twenty-five years.

How Gilded Suns Started

We first came to the idea for the book (and company) while playing Pathfinder in our basement.  We decided to make a new world, inspired by steampunk.  We wanted to make it darker and grittier than most steampunk out there, and we didn't want to just throw a bunch of gears and goggles on everything.  We also wanted to incorporate a lot of the struggles that were prevalent in Victorian society.  It was an age where labor unions fought in lethal battles against thugs hired by their employers, people - including children - worked eighteen hours a day six days a week, women fought to earn the right to vote, the Wild West was closing, China was in turmoil, Japan was rising, and battleships evolved so quickly that many were obsolete before they launched.  These conflicts are often overlooked by steampunk authors, who focus instead on the lighter aspects of the era.

This book, the initial setting book will focus primarily on the nations of the world, and on international intrigue.  If this book is successful, we hope to write more of them, covering each of the Gilded Suns nations in detail, and also offering looks at the secret societies, magical aspects, other continents, and possibly Gothic horror or Lovecraftian horror aspects.  But for now we are focusing on the first book.

What We Need

What we are raising money for is artwork, and to finance the initial print run.  After reaching our goal, the more we raise, the better the artwork will be and the more copies will be printed.

Risks and challenges

One risk is getting the artwork in on time. If we don't get a piece on time, we will evaluate the situation when it happens and determine whether we should go without the image or images, commission them to someone else, or delay the release.

Another risk is the price of printing. If the price of printing goes up too much, we would be forced to raise our price and print fewer copies.

If printing is delayed for whatever reason, it may affect our release date.
