Party Golf is a couch competitive game based on the simple (yet incredibly addictive) mechanics of physics-based 2D golf with the basic goal of getting your ball into the hole. The “Party” aspect of it is 2–4 players simultaneously shooting for the exact same goal at the same time.
At its core, the game is about beating the others to the hole. The physics-based gameplay mechanics are intrinsically fun, but the long-term hook of the game is that players are able to choose custom combinations of game modifiers.These change the game experience in simple, complex, and novel ways. These range from simple things such as changing a ball’s shape, size, or weight; to powerups that allow various effects such as shooting in mid-air or repelling your opponent’s balls.
Each level in Party Golf is procedurally generated such that no two rounds of the game are the same. Combined with our modifiers, this provides an almost infinite player-driven gameplay customisation with a trillion trillion trillion variations. It is simple and fast to pick up, but has long-lasting appeal. It is great for all ages, and perfect for parties.
Getting across the awesomeness that is Party Golf is hard to do with words or even video. Thankfully, we have a free working demo that you can play right now. There's some pretty simple AI to play against, but Party Golf is best played with friends, and with controllers instead of a mouse.

We at Giant Margarita believe that the couchplay experience is an exceptionally fun way to experience games. The genre is undergoing something of a resurgence with new titles like Towerfall Ascension, Nidhogg, Gang Beasts, and Sports Friends launching on PlayStation platforms, all of which have met with commercial success and strong player followings.
With Party Golf, we wanted to create a game specifically targeted at couchplay. Its gameplay is designed to create high levels of in-game player interaction between friends, which leads to real-world interactions. This style of gameplay is nostalgic for long-time gamers and something refreshingly captivating for players who haven’t experienced it before.
We’ve undertaken lots of very (un)serious research and (un)scientific experimentation, and we’ve created lots of fun customisable gameplay options. We are creating an experience that has the same feeling as some aspects of PC modding, but with average players in control through an incredibly simple menu system. Through play testing we have already seen gameplay modes emerge that we had never dreamed of.
At this stage, we’ve developed a PC build and publicly tested it to see if people love it as much as we do. In August, we took a concept build to a 2-day festival and had over 3,000 people play Party Golf. The response to our game was amazing! People from ages 8 to 80 played the game and stayed around for match after match. During this and other play tests, we’ve received lots requests for a console version so that brings us to Kickstarter!
Our Kickstarter project is about bringing Party Golf to consoles. Our PC and Ouya builds are already available for download and we’ve built these in our spare time over the last six months. We’d now like to get much more serious about developing a console version, and we need your help!
There's already more features in the demo than you can poke a stick at, but we plan to do a LOT more stick-poking before we release the console version. Here is a list of some of the great things we want to put into the game. (This is list isn't complete, we have a top-secret list at Giant Margarita HQ that is growing every day, because all we can think about is Party Golf!)
- An improved XMB-styled menu (as seen in the video)
- Multi-ball, Turbo, Air Brakes, and Grappling Hook Powerups!
- Epic camera zooming!
- Scrolling levels (think endless runner/racing)
- Slow motion and Super speed!
- More advanced AI!
- More combatative powerups (flash, reverse and drunk aiming)
- Water! (required by international golf video game law)
- Lava! (not required by internation golf video game law)
- Junk falling from the sky!
- Multiple holes!
- Targets other than holes (like floating balloons, and checkpoints) Custom ball colours and shapes!
- Saveable game mode presets
- Differently styled backgrounds (including disco, Webcam/PlayStation Camera feed, YouTube videos)
- DualShock Controller sounds and lights to match the game
- PSN avatars in the round start and the scoreboard
- Stat tracking for each PSN account (maybe in the cloud saves)
- We really are going to maek (sic) everything jelly
- Level saving / custom playlist making
- Destructible terrain
- 8-players from 4-controllers
- Extended rubberbanding -- dynamically balancing more than just the tee order (e.g. bounciness, size, etc.)
- And a whole heap more!
UPDATE: STRETCH GOALS
Party game is a game about playing with friends and customising the game so you can create your own idea of what the most fun version of the game is -- so our stretch goals try to bring even more awesome to that idea!
$16000 Even more local players!
We'll make sure that Party Golf can be played with 8-players at the same time. We'll support the wacky approach of 8-players sharing 4 controllers and also using smartphones as alternate controllers -- as few people have 8 controllers in their house, but almost everyone has a smartphone.
$18000 Play online!
We're committed to making Party Golf the funnest couch multiplayer game that we can, but our most asked question is "can you play online?". Well, if we reach this stretch goal, we'll include online play.
$20000 Level/Playlist/Customisation sharing!
We'll build in the opportunity to save things you create into some sort of magical cloud like thing and allow you to find and use other people's stuff.
How are the funds used
To develop a console version of Party Golf, we need to raise funds to cover art and music, classification of the game, quality assurance, polishing and then marketing the game.
We're so close to a PS4 release, we can nearly taste it! But to get there, we're gonna need some careful budgeting so that the right areas of Party Golf get the attention they deserve. The chart above broadly describes where the $14,000 in funds will be allocated. But here's a further breakdown of where your hard earned cash is going.
Art + Music - 15%
To make Party Golf even more of a party and have even less golf, we're going to hire a part-time artist to give the graphics the polish they deserve. We're also going to be improving our music, which involves sourcing new audio for the game from several talented artists.
Marketing - 20%
There are nearly as many golf games in existence as there are game modifier variations in Party Golf (a trillion, trillion, trillion to be precise). We need to show the jaded and weary world that Party Golf has waaaay more party than is traditionally in a golf game. To do this, we need to attend trade shows, lurk forums, and put up appealing Facebook ads so that the whole world can see how awesome Party Golf is.
Classification - 14%
Since the game is intended to release on the PS4, we're gonna get the game classified! Whilst we are expecting this process to go smoothly (strictly no zombies in Party Golf), it still costs a lot of money to get the game classified by the different authorities around the world eg. PEGI, ESRB, OFLC.
Quality Assurance - 22%
Every day, new and even wackier features are added to Party Golf. But we need some talented people to sit down with a large cup of coffee, and tell us that the Brick Ball, with the Aftertouch powerup, on Low Gravity, makes the game explode. That's just not cool, and we need to make sure that the game is smooth, stable and fun.
Rewards - 19%
T-shirts don't grow on trees apparently (what else would the 'T' in T-shirt stand for??). We're allocating some funds to make sure that you the backer gets the rewards you paid for, whilst making sure that we still keep our shirts.
Kickstarter Fees - 10%
Until Bitcoin takes over the world, we still have to live with credit card fees. All told, 10 cents in the dollar will go to fees, but we've accounted for that, and are prepared!
We hope to deploy the console version by June 2016. We’re already a long way along that track, and we have already developed the way the game plays. We’ve also got a flexible system for adding in new game modifiers, tonnes of existing modifiers, and we have a whole bunch of ideas for more.
What's a Kickstarter without the ludicrous rewards? Well, we have a great set of rewards, both for those who love merchandise, like the super exclusive Party Golf T-shirts, and for those who want to help us create new fun things in the game. There’s even an opportunity to come and drink margaritas with us and play Party Golf!
Backers will be able to choose from some fantastic t-shirt designs, which are shown below. Note that the final designs may vary and will mention the PS4 instead of the OUYA.

We are going to add heaps more things to this as development continues. Risks and challenges
The biggest risk facing the Giant Margarita team is time. We are all either currently in full-time employment or in full-time postgraduate level study. Over the past few years, the development of our products has been undertaken in our spare time, mostly on weekends and evenings.
We have two strategies in place to ensure we have a have a successful and timely release of Party Golf. The first is that we have identified a core period of time during November 2015 and February 2016 that we are able to commit to the development of the game in order to complete the primary tasks of development, art, and sound.
