'MAMA SAID': what we're all about.

'Mama Said' is a line of garments inspired by a box of scrap material handed down to Alexz from her Great-grandmother Ruby.  These scraps from the 50's and 60's seem much more precious than the common household objects that they came from, and Jess and Alexz feel a responsibility to keep their memory alive.

Through digital processes, each swatch or scrap will be scanned and re-worked into functioning repeat patterns, intended for re-print.  Each pattern is disproportionate to its original- significantly enlarged to heighten the viewer's overall experience of the fabric.

The garments constructed from these fabrics are based on iconic sewing patterns from the 1950's.  Each look is highly exaggerated to dominate the garment and the wearer of the garment.  This is especially expressed in the collection of hats and accessories being designed for each look. Though the basis of the line is recognizably derived from the 1940's to early 1960's, the artists are using their own 'memories' and imagination to style each look as they see fit in accordance to their false sense of nostalgia.

In addition to our graduating thesis shows, the line will be presented in two fashion shows in April of 2012.  To a soundtrack of revived jazz, swing and soul, each model will embody a character within the garment, dramatizing iconic mannerisms of the time periods they come from.  Behind the catwalk, models exiting the runway will disrobe into uniform slips, while they carefully place their own garments and accessories into assorted containers, such as garment bags and hat boxes.  By the end of the performance, all that will be left is a stage transformed into a quiet space of preserved keepsakes that transcends from the past into the present moment.

This is the pinnacle of what we have both worked to achieve in our college career, and this is by far the most intensive project we have embarked on.  Though we have already begun the process of making, between the cost of printing our own fabric and purchasing the necessary materials, we are monetarily weighed.  We appreciate your continual support and enthusiasm for our work, and humbly ask that you help bring our vision to fruition by pledging to the project.

Thank you!

Jess and Alexz
