About

IMPORTANT NOTE: We would like to thank all of our backers and GHOULASH fans for your support. Those who are interested in learning more about the current status of the GHOULASH: The Last Game on Earth board game always will be able to find information at GHOULASH.com/boardgame.

GHOULASH: The Last Game on Earth takes place on an Earth that has become infested by giant, green, deadly creatures known as Ghouls. Ghouls strike suddenly, unexpectedly, destroying any living creature within reach.

The citizens of Earth, led by dedicated teams of scientists, soldiers and professional Ghoul-hunters, are facing the Ghoul threat head-on.

You, too, can join the fight against Ghouls in the new board game GHOULASH: The Last Game on Earth.

GHOULASH Games, our small, father-and-son publishing company, has come to Kickstarter in hopes of launching the next element of the GHOULASH universe via a traditional printer. We already have a pen-and-paper version of the game that is played worldwide (it's been translated by fans into six languages), and we have an iOS version on the way.

By the way, we've come up with a name and logo for this Kickstarter campaign, which we're planning to use on some of the reward items: It's called GHOUL-AID 2012.

Cover art by fantasy artist Dave Dorman

This part is just too good to bury deeper on the page: Famed fantasy artist Dave Dorman has agreed to paint the cover art for GHOULASH: The Last Game on Earth, bringing the intense action, deadly Ghouls and brave heroes to vivid life, in a way that only he can.

Here's some info about Dave from a press release on his blog:

"A legendary, beloved figure in the comic book industry often characterized as 'one of the nicest guys in comics,' Eisner and Inkpot Award-winning artist Dave Dorman was voted the #1 Star Wars Artist of All Time by the fans ; George Lucas owns more than 90 of Dave Dorman’s original oil paintings. Dorman has created art for every major publisher and licensed character within the worlds of science fiction, fantasy and horror, including but not limited to Batman, Conan the Barbarian, Planet of the Apes, King Kong, Spider-Man, Buckaroo Banzai, Captain America, G.I. Joe, Green Hornet, Green Lantern, Indiana Jones, Harry Potter, Star Trek, Battlestar Galactica, Lord of the Rings, Alien, Predator, Alien v. Predator, World of Warcraft, Magic: The Gathering, Dungeons and Dragons, and many more."

We're thrilled to have Dave Dorman as part of this GHOULASH project (and hope to have some samples to post very soon)!

About the game

GHOULASH: The Last Game on Earth is a game for 2 to 4 players, recommended age 10 and older. It takes anywhere from 30 to 90 minutes to play.

The object of the game is to be the first player to earn 10 Victory Points from battles with Ghouls. It's a card-strategy game; each player has a deck of 45 cards that represents a character in the GHOULASH universe. Throughout the game, players maintain a hand of seven cards, replenishing at the beginning of each turn. As Ghouls are encountered, players attempt to best the Ghoul's strength with a combination of their character's Combat Value and Value Cards from their hand.

Players journey through a barren landscape of the imagination -- it could be an office building, an abandoned warehouse, underground passageways -- that changes with each new game. The "game board" is actually four double-sided tiles that can be arranged in hundreds of different configurations.

Game set shown is a prototype version.

GHOULASH is all about card strategy, particularly with the Value Cards, which are the basic currency of the game. But players also have Action Cards, Danger Cards, Rescue Cards and the all-important Specialty Cards, which are unique to each character.

As players move through the landscape, they fear being tossed into a Hole or pounded with Debris by a Danger-Card-wielding opponent. Opponents also can challenge players as they attempt to battle Ghouls. It's a rough-and-tumble game with plenty of movement, excitement and even the occasional player scream or two.

Players take on the identities of the four lead characters from the GHOULASH universe. Professor David Lake is the world's foremost authority on Malectoplasm, the substance from which Ghouls are made. Doctor Pamela Gray is the physician/researcher who was co-creator of the formula known as Ghoo, the only substance known to be harmful to a Ghoul. Cornealius is a Ghoul-hunter-for-hire and the bodyguard for Lake and Gray. General James. H. Zone is the leader of ADEF, the Aberration Deterrent and Eradication Forces, the organization charged with the elimination of Ghouls in the United States.

In the game, each character has a unique specialty that gives them an advantage over other players. In addition, their character deck includes five unique Specialty Cards that provide other special abilities as well.

Here are some scenes from a typical game:

A brief history

Mike Suchcicki created the first version of GHOULASH: The Last Game on Earth back in 1982. He was attempting to create a game-master-oriented dungeon crawl that could be played by only two people, with each player serving as the other's dungeon master. After limited marketing of the pen-and-paper game, he put it on the shelf for a number of years, resurrecting it in the late '90s. By the time he was finished refining the game, it fit entirely on one sheet of paper.

Ghoulash.com was launched in 2001, offering the various GHOULASH scenarios for download. Having pretty much grown up with the game, Joe Suchcicki joined the GHOULASH team, creating new scenarios and adding to the mythology.

A few years ago, Joe began the early designs of a board game version of GHOULASH. Once Joe had the basic concept developed, Mike began preparing graphics and design elements and play testing began.

While the new board game will become the flagship of the GHOULASH: The Last Game on Earth line, it will only be one part of the GHOULASH adventure universe, joining the pen-and-paper version and the soon-to-be-released iOS version.

More about the pledge levels

We've worked hard to prepare some interesting and enticing pledge levels for the Ghoul-Aid 2012 campaign.

In the GHOULASH universe, most, if not all, of the heroes work for the government agency ADEF, the Aberration Deterrent and Eradication Forces. It's the group charged by the highest levels of government to research and destroy the Ghoul threat. ADEF is the United States contingent; there are similar agencies around the world.

Backers at the Recruit level will receive a personalized, laminated ADEF ID Card, identifying them as the latest soldier in the worldwide Ghoul defensive.

Sweepers are specially trained ADEF soldiers who work in tight and highly disciplined formations, working to clear an area of Ghouls in a fast and efficient way.

Backers at the Sweeper level will receive the Recruit ID card and the limited-edition "Sweeper" scenario for the GHOULASH board game. Printed on a collectible Ghoul-Aid-edition Briefing card, the scenario was created specially for the Ghoul-Aid campaign by board game designer Joe Suchcicki.

In 2007 Ghoulash Games collected a series of never-before-published scenarios of the pen-and-paper version of GHOULASH and released them in three bound editions. Each book is a stack of pre-printed Scenario Charts, three scenarios per book, with enough scenarios for four two-player games of each scenario. Each edition of the P&P version includes a four-page Ghoulash Adventures mini-comic, with art by artist Andy Marlette.

The pen-and-paper version is a two-player mini-dungeon-crawl in which each player acts as the dungeon master for the other. The P&P version has fans around the world.

Backers at the Operative level will receive the ID card and "Sweeper" scenario, as well as the three editions of the P&P version of GHOULASH, along with two Ghoulash pens. Shipping is included in the level cost.

Here's where the fun really begins! Backers at the Agent level will get the ID card, the "Sweeper" scenario and a copy of the GHOULASH: The Last Game on Earth board game.

If you're interested in multiple copies, just add an additional $40 for every board game set sent to the same location. (This applies to every higher level that includes a copy of the board game.)

We're shipping the game out free to U.S. locations, but we're requesting some help in shipping elsewhere. Shipping to Canada will require an extra $10, while shipping to other international locations will require an additional $20. (This applies to every higher level that includes a copy of the board game.)

Backers at the Specialist level get everything in the previous levels: The ID card, the "Sweeper" scenario, the three P&P scenario packs, two Ghoulash pens and the GHOULASH board game.

All stipulations as to multiple copies and international shipping apply here.

As we mentioned above, we're thrilled to death to have famed fantasy artist Dave Dorman as part of the GHOULASH: The Last Game on Earth team; he's agreed to paint the cover art for the board game.

Backers at the Technician level will get everything in the Specialist level, plus a limited-edition print of the GHOULASH board game cover art, signed and numbered by Dorman himself.

All stipulations as to multiple copies and international shipping apply here.

This is our Retailer Level. For brick-and-mortar stores only, it includes six copies of the GHOULASH board game at retailer discount, plus promotional materials for your store. These promo materials include signage, demo tips and FAQs, tournament tips and exclusive contact information. Also, backers at this level will receive 50 each of the special character card and scenario that we'll be handing out at Gen Con! These cards are not available in the retail set, nor will they be included in any future edition. Use them as demo or tournament premiums, point-of-purchase freebies, whatever.

Backers at this level will be asked for proof that they are, indeed a B&M store. Shipment of this level is only to U.S. locations.

By the way, we ask that you pronounce this level "la-BOR-a-tory." Thank you.

Joe Suchcicki, designer of the GHOULASH board game, already is planning a second edition of the game, featuring four new characters, but we've decided to give our Kickstarter backers a sneak peek at one of those characters here at the Commander level.

Backers at the Commander level will receive everything from the Technician level, as well as a special Ghoul-aid-edition character deck and profile card featuring the character of ADEF intelligence officer Lt. Maximilien Caesar.

Caesar is the ultimate intelligence officer and seems to know anything that anyone in ADEF is doing at any particular time. His main task at ADEF is to ferret out corporate and criminal use of malectoplasmic activity (in other words, crooks who attempt to use Ghouls as tools in their crime waves).

As with other characters in the GHOULASH board game, Caesar will have his own specialty that gives him an edge over other characters, as well as his own set of Specialty Cards.

All stipulations as to multiple copies and international shipping apply here.

We call this the Infiltrator level because it allows you, the player, to infiltrate the game! You'll get a special character deck and profile card featuring YOUR name (or the name of your choice) and YOUR image (or the image of your choice)!

The deck and profile card comes in a special Ghoul-Aid-edition set, featuring a specialty and Specialty Cards not used for any previous character, including the Commander level. This level also includes everything from the Technician level.

All stipulations as to multiple copies and international shipping apply here.

This level allows you to get EVERYTHING we've offered to this point, including the ID Card, "Sweeper" scenario, three print Scenario Packs and Ghoulash pens, the board game (don't want to forget that!), the limited-edition Dorman print, the special Maximilien Caesar character deck and the custom character deck with your name and image!

All stipulations as to multiple copies and international shipping apply here.
