User Interface Preview + Updates

Posted by Pebble Technology (Creator)

Bit of business before we get to the cool demo. I'd like to apologize for the abrupt way that I mentioned we would not be able to begin shipping Pebbles in September (in Update 17). It's clear now that this information should have been highlighted and discussed more thoroughly.

Planning and scheduling a major manufacturing project is complex. We're working hard to complete the interconnected tasks that make up the production process. For me and the hardware engineers on the project, a large percentage of our time is spent exchanging complex spreadsheets filled with components specs by email, Skyping about the dimensions of minute hardware requirements and IMing our manufacturing team and factory. Not super exciting. That's why we've decided to share the more interesting stuff (photos, video and more!) in updates.

Our goal is to provide you with accurate information and interesting examples of our progress via these updates. We're working quickly, but we don't want to compromise on quality. While we won't be posting a shipping date until we're extremely certain that we'll be able to meet it, our feeling is that by monitoring our progress by the updates you'll have an excellent feel for how the project is going. When we do share the ship date, it won't be too surprising because you'll have seen the project come together in these updates.

Ask-Me-Anything about Pebble today at 11am Pacific!

I can only go into so much detail during these updates. That's why I'll be hosting a thread on Reddit ( today at 11am Pacific (2pm EST, midnight Mumbai) where you can ask me any other questions you might have about Pebble.

User Interface (UI) Preview

Martijn is Pebble's User Interface designer and iOS developer. Check out the video in high resolution (full screen for best effect) for a preview of the Pebble UI. Keep in mind this is just a preview and subject to change as we continue to develop the software. For example, the font size is customizable, eg you can select to have emails shown on screen in arger print. The next step is to implement this UI for the watch itself and test it thoroughly on a prototype Pebble.

Martijn used iOS to create a prototype Pebble for quick designing. Here is an example of an incoming email on Pebble.

Other random tidbits from the Pebble world

  • Starting a shipping test. Volunteer Pebblers around the world will receive an empty shipment from us to determine how long the shipping process will take. Thanks Twitter followers!
  • Started working on the Manufacturing Test Plan (MTP)
  • Ran into an antenna issue. Working through it with a bunch of antenna experts. We'll figure it out.
  • Started tooling on a bunch of simple components like the USB charge cable and shipping box
  • Tested tons of different watch strap samples to make sure we get the texture just right
  • Ordered 500,000 more resistors. You can never have too many resistors!
  • We're working on a Pebble Account page where backers can update their shipping information.
  • In the next update, we'll post more info about the software development progress.

That's it for now. Thanks again for backing us, Pebblers!

Eric + Pebble team.

Don't sweat it regarding shipping date.....personally I always thought September was optimistic considering the huge increase in pre-orders / backers. I honestly don't mind waiting until November / December 2012 before I receive my Pebble - I'd prefer a more polished product than something rushed just to meet some notional release date. Keep up the good work.

It would be pretty great if you released the IOS prototype so that we can play around with it and kinda of get a feeling of how our pebbles will be like you guys are doing... just an idea

I agree that track control is more important to me than volume control. I hope that you all can figure that out. Thanks for the great update and I look forward tot he AMA.

    4. Olaf on

So you will ask before the date of delivery about an address of the shipping?

    6. Dominic Soh on

Hmmmm how do you determine who gets a test?

    7. David Pabst on

+1 on adding skip forward and skip backward. How about having a short-hold-press on the middle (play/pause) button to switch between volume and skipping for the other two buttons?

    8. Andrzej Haskiel on

this thing is supposed to be equipped with accelerometer, so you can probably get more actions than just 4 buttons with gestures.

    9. Robrecht Vandemeulebroecke on

That interface is looking nice and fluid. Don't panic, folks, there's reason to think track skipping won't be included just because you don't see it in the demo (via a long button press, maybe?).

It sounds like you understand process and quality pretty well - I support your caution and the necessity of delays: rushing could spell the end of the entire endeavor if you produce a large number of units that fail. Taking your time is far more sustainable - anybody who gets frustrated at this point (a) isn't used to start-ups and (b) may not be that interested in the first place. Do what you have to do and don't compromise.

Holy crap, he is listening to Spinvis? I love this guy.

    12. Matthew on

@ED i agree, time will tell.

    13. Oliver Needham on

I hope you haven't forgotten about the Android element of the phone thing! :P I know you're just using the iPhone to test the interface, but I hope the Android stuff is just as good!

@ketrel, any 22mm band should work.

I hope the music control does next track as well as going back to the beginning of the current track/previous track. Volume is important but skipping tracks is more useful. Maybe a double press of the middle button can change whether it's volume or skip. I know things are still being developed so fingers crossed.

    15. Ryan Tivis on

      Thanks for the update.

I would say, i'm not asking for an exact "shipping date" as I know that can be hard to pinpoint, but I would like to have at least the guessed year of release.. 2012.. 2013??

Thanks for the update - great stuff! Only ONE BIG question: the shown display on teh pcb... is this a real e-ink-display as it will be finalyy in the pebble or is this a ordinary lcd?

    17. Ed Howell on

Promises, promises...the warm fuzzy is getting cooler and rougher as time goes on. Still not absolutely convinced I haven't been hornswoggled. Time will tell.

    18. Kit Farman on

No next track control? Seems like a serious flaw, especially since it was presented as one of its uses in the kickstarter video.

    19. Japh on

Thanks for the update, Eric! It's very exciting to see things gradually coming together. Good luck with the rest of the process :)

      Spinvis! Excellent taste! :-)

    22. richardj on

Great update guys, with such a big batch and complex product you can get it right just once. Better delay a bit and deliver a great product than try to ship it as fast as possible. Nice to see a Dutch guy on the team as well. Go Pebble team!

    24. Minja Miketa on

I was just reading update 17 wondering when we will be updated again when I saw this. It is looking good so far and I hope the antenna issue isn't too big of the problem. I do have a question software wise though, will we be able to skip through songs? From what you have at the moment you can pause, play, and change the volume but no skip forward option. Just curious.

      Keep up the good work.

    25. Andrew Munsell on

The UI looks pretty cool, and if we can really read an entire email, that would be pretty impressive.

    26. Ben Buchwald on

For the music control app shown, it would be nice to have a next song button. Is that a possibility? Maybe pressing 2 buttons together? If not, it is actually more useful to me than volume buttons since there are physical volume buttons I can reach on my phone without taking it out of my pocket, but no skip/back buttons.

    27. Zeelobby on

This is awesome, like you said, TAKE YOUR TIME. I want a quality project, not a rushed piece of crap that meets a shipping deadline.
