User Interface Preview + Updates

Posted by Pebble Technology (Creator)

Bit of business before we get to the cool demo. I'd like to apologize for the abrupt way that I mentioned we would not be able to begin shipping Pebbles in September (in Update 17). It's clear now that this information should have been highlighted and discussed more thoroughly.

Planning and scheduling a major manufacturing project is complex. We're working hard to complete the interconnected tasks that make up the production process. For me and the hardware engineers on the project, a large percentage of our time is spent exchanging complex spreadsheets filled with components specs by email, Skyping about the dimensions of minute hardware requirements and IMing our manufacturing team and factory. Not super exciting. That's why we've decided to share the more interesting stuff (photos, video and more!) in updates.

Our goal is to provide you with accurate information and interesting examples of our progress via these updates. We're working quickly, but we don't want to compromise on quality. While we won't be posting a shipping date until we're extremely certain that we'll be able to meet it, our feeling is that by monitoring our progress by the updates you'll have an excellent feel for how the project is going. When we do share the ship date, it won't be too surprising because you'll have seen the project come together in these updates.

Ask-Me-Anything about Pebble today at 11am Pacific!

I can only go into so much detail during these updates. That's why I'll be hosting a thread on Reddit ( today at 11am Pacific (2pm EST, midnight Mumbai) where you can ask me any other questions you might have about Pebble.

User Interface (UI) Preview

Martijn is Pebble's User Interface designer and iOS developer. Check out the video in high resolution (full screen for best effect) for a preview of the Pebble UI. Keep in mind this is just a preview and subject to change as we continue to develop the software. For example, the font size is customizable, eg you can select to have emails shown on screen in arger print. The next step is to implement this UI for the watch itself and test it thoroughly on a prototype Pebble.

Martijn used iOS to create a prototype Pebble for quick designing. Here is an example of an incoming email on Pebble.

Other random tidbits from the Pebble world

  • Starting a shipping test. Volunteer Pebblers around the world will receive an empty shipment from us to determine how long the shipping process will take. Thanks Twitter followers!
  • Started working on the Manufacturing Test Plan (MTP)
  • Ran into an antenna issue. Working through it with a bunch of antenna experts. We'll figure it out.
  • Started tooling on a bunch of simple components like the USB charge cable and shipping box
  • Tested tons of different watch strap samples to make sure we get the texture just right
  • Ordered 500,000 more resistors. You can never have too many resistors!
  • We're working on a Pebble Account page where backers can update their shipping information.
  • In the next update, we'll post more info about the software development progress.

That's it for now. Thanks again for backing us, Pebblers!

Eric + Pebble team.

Looking forward to it. Is it possible to have a time-delayed shuffle of styles for the time display? Or, maybe allow for a series of artistic themes/seasonal displays to be downloaded for a nominal fee?

    3. CaffeineJunkie on

@Bejan Technically you cant. You backed a project. Unfortunately many people did not understand the concept of Kickstarter and thought it was just another online store. It's not. It's a way to provide funding for projects you're interested in, and in the process get a a reward. At this point in time they're not even late yet, though they have indicated they will be, but this is because they want to get it right, not just ship it out the door as soon as they can.

    4. Eric Martens on

good quality work needs time........take your time and get it right the first time!

    5. Dylan Wilson on

Looking great! Can't wait to get my hands on one! Keep up the great work!

How can I cancel my order?

    7. Rick Folks on

Yep, take your time...I'm not in a rush. I want the product to be something you, the creators, can be proud of...

    8. Tom Ryan on

Pebble Team, this watch is looking great. And every time I see it, I'm reminded why I wanted it in the first place! No doubt that's why the nerds who went batsh** crazy with news of a delay are angry too - it really does something that no other product does right now.

I spent $115 backing (NOT buying) a product, which means I don't get it immediately. I'm happy to watch the product take form, influence design decisions (e.g., packaging, color), and be part of a larger process that major watch manufacturers didn't want to be part of. That's what Kickstarter is! If I wanted a product now, I'd go to Target.

Anyway, keep up the great work and the definitely keep the videos that actualy show us how the UI is coming along. Can't wait to see some actual hardware when it arrives from your manufacturer!

Just to add to what others have said already, I'd much prefer a slight delay in the shipment than for the product to be rushed and so possibly affect the quality.

    10. CaffeineJunkie on

I'm not unduly worried about the round watchface with the chopped off edges. The beauty of Pebble is that we can change the watchface if we want. I'm sure a rectactangular one will appear fairly quickly.

Also, notice they pointed out things they have encountered during the manufacturing process, including an antennae issue. I'd rather they took the time to address this as apposed to the debacle of the iPhone 4 where we were just told to hold it differently. Let them get it right first time.

I've been thinking about it and, while I think most of the nerdrage about the shipping delay is stupid, my personal goodwill towards the project will expire on Dec 31, 2012 if no shipments have been made by then.

The ability to flip the face would be neat for showing others what time it is too ;-)

There is a difference between raising expectations and managing them. We used to have an idea about the release date. Now we have none? You will have known for a while that you won't hit September, and you guys sound professional enough to be working to some kind of roll out plan, so when is the next eta?

Wauw, goed gedaan met die tool van je Martijn....het moet echt een droom zijn om in Palo Alto te zitten :D
Kan niet wachten mn eigen Pebble onderhanden te nemen.

Goodluck to all of you Pebble Devs!

    19. Ken Jones on

Interesting point by Warren about whether the Pebble can be tweaked to better accommodate southpaws. I'm a righty myself, so it doesn't affect me personally but I can see where he's coming from with this. I would imagine that the Pebble is actually the first watch that can be truly adapted for left handed use because of the customisable display and it would probably be a simple matter for the team to include a "Lefty Flip" option within the iPhone and Android control apps which could invert the screen on the watch so that lefties can wear the Pebble on their right wrists and have the three button side of the watch on the left (obviously they'll also want to pop the strap of and switch the two sides around so that the buckle is the right way round for them as well). I'm just guessing here but this seems like the sort of thing that could only be done with a Pebble and should be a function that could be added very quickly, either before launch or perhaps in a later software update.

One other request, either for the team or for any of you budding clock face designers out there, is for a text clock that says,

      IS ON
      IS ON

Just because it would amuse me to have a watch like that. Pretty please. With sugar on top.

I just want an inaccurate clock that says (in beautifull text) things like Quater past Eight or half past nine or quater till midnight. That would rock big time. Doesn't need to be more accurate. I'd really love that :)

    22. Roger on

Thanks for the update. Doesn't look near to shipping by a long way. I hope you will be investing in better fonts and better design. It's still pretty fugly from this demo.

Just a suggestion about the analog clock view of the UI - rather than trying to fit a circular clock onto a rectangular face of the watch, why not just make the clock rectangular? This will also prevent the outer circle of the analog clock from looking like it's cut off on the sides and make it seem like everything fits as it's designed to.

    25. Ronald Wong Ho Hip on

Oh , I see what Martijn is doing now , he's actually "pressing" the virual buttons , as if you would push a button in the real world. That's why he's using a sideways gesture Tyler.

    26. Ronald Wong Ho Hip on

Tyler , the app on the iPhone he's using seems to be a virtual Pebble , the app has the same buttons as the Pebble , for some reason Martijn is making swipe gestures to activate the buttons but the app is actually activating a button on the virtual Pebble. It's regular up and down buttons , 3 on the right side of the Pebble and one on the left side of the Pebble. He uses a "sideways" looking gesture but really is pushing "up" and "down" buttons on the right side.

    27. Erik Wieberdink on

@Tyler > He is pushing the 'virtual' buttons on the watch. You've got three buttons on the right side (up, select and down) en he is pushing the down button.

As I have said before, I've been on the exact opposite of this situation. The I'm watch was hideous with no information at all. Do I wish I was getting my watch in September? You bet! That said, this update is tremendously encouraging, and I can't wait to get my watch. Thank you very much!!

      Tyler on

scrolling up/down by using sideways gestures seems iffy; why not up/down like _every_ other UI in the world?

      Tyler on

I hope you are doing user testing and video recording them interacting with it. This can reveal an amazing amount. Very difficult to avoid design bias.

    31. Barrett Dent on

Love the UI preview. I notice you mentioned setting up double-tap on the center button to skip forward. But you didn't mention whether triple-tap will skip back (like apple headphones mentioned by Ryan.)

Also I'm wondering if a press-and-hold could be applied to the up/down vol buttons for seek forward and seek back control. I know this complicates matters and might want to be a user enabled option.

    32. Peter McAndrew on

If you're going to give times (especially if you're giving multiple timezones anyway) please give the times in UTC (formerly GMT) as one option. I find it quite annoying to be given times in three different timezones which I would have to look up the time difference from my own when you could have easily given the one universal (that's what the U stands for) timezone.

    33. Bryan on

Thanks guys , the updates might come once in a while, but I must say you guys are one of the most committed teams here on kickstarter. There is a consistent flow of updates. Really helps to put us at ease in knowing the developments and that you guys are actually working very hard.

Thanks for the UI preview. A question: will there be a UI option for lefties? I'm left-handed, so I wear my watch on my right wrist. I noticed that Martijn was evaluating the UI by balancing the iPhone on his left wrist and driving it with his right hand. Unless there's a way to flip the buttons to the other side, that's going to be really clunky for me; with the Pebble on my right wrist,my left hand would be partially covering the display. Lefties are 10% of the general population; please don't forget about us! Thanks.

Great news! Getting to see the UI in action answers a lot of questions.

    37. Valentino Perez on

Thank you very much for the update. I understood from the beginning that Pebble might not be released in September. However, I feel you need to take your time and get these watches done right the first time. I don't want to deal with bugs, glitches, nor have to send it back to the manufacture for a fix. I want reliable product. You have to money to make this work to a point. Also, all the work you have put in should give you experience to work on the next watch. I may be a small part in this yet I feel you all can do this right, time is something that is flexible.

One more thing, I feel you may need to play with the font chooses, watch designs, and menu images more. yes they are basic, except they are not clean, sharp or modern takes on font styles. Details are going to make this product stand above the rest if done right, while if its done just to meet the needs of a few rather then the needs of a vision, that vision needs to be intact. You will not be sustainable or have much of a company if you loose the vision to guide your future.

Just make the best smart watch in the world!

I say no sweat about shipping time, better to get a proper and well tested pepple, then have to hassle with problems.

I too agree that pebble won't be arriving anytime soon, but if I wanted my product on time and in a box I would have gone to the shop.

looks good but one thing is that it does look like glare is going to be a problem, hopefully it really isnt because its hard enough seeing smartphones and I would like to have similar readability to that of a Kindle equivalent, a watch needs to be visible in any lighting.

Best of luck though, id rather you take a long time and deliver a stunning device than cut corners!.

It looks like the Music app had only Pause/play and vol up/down. Since there probably isn't 30 +- volume levels you could maybe sacrifice hold in the vol button for fast increase/decrease volume to change track up/down instead. What I mean is that by holding in the volume up button rather than it function as a rapid increase in volume, have it change to the next track. And skip back for volume down button.

      What do you think?
