About ART SMART
I created ART SMART over 15 years ago because I realized that many people didn't always know how to best connect with museum collections. I wanted to make the experience of exploring art more personal and engaging. Over the years, we’ve created tours and experiences for small groups - from families to groups of friends or colleagues. Our clients tell us what they’re interested in, what they want to learn more about, and we customize each experience so that each museum or gallery tour is unique and innovative.
Through the years of leading tours in New York, we’ve found the right mix of ingredients to create special museum & gallery outings for people, and now we’re ready to bring ART SMART to these other cities : Washington D.C.; Boston and Chicago!
Specifically, we have three areas that we want to expand in:
#1: Creating new kid’s booklets for our Family Tours
Viewing art in a museum can be especially overwhelming for children, so we’ve created a series of booklets for use in our Family Tours that includes scavenger hunts and informative games, and builds off topics that children are already familiar with and excited by - from Ancient Egyptian history to medieval knights. Now that ART SMART is expanding to Boston, Chicago and D.C. - all cities that have fantastic encyclopedic museums - we will need to research, create and print more children’s booklets for the the Art Institute of Chicago; the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston and the National Portrait Gallery in D.C.
Creating entire new series of childrens’ workbooks requires a significant amount of resources - from time needed to research the collections, to designing and printing the booklets. Contributing to our Kickstarter campaign will help with our publishing and printing costs and will ensure that the team will be able to spend as much time as they need to put together these educational and fun booklets.
#2 “Feast Your Eyes: Foodie Art”
We want to to bring our innovative and interdisciplinary tour, “Feast Your Eyes” to Boston, Chicago and DC - all of which have excellent culinary scenes and a deep connection to food. This is so much more than a just a regular art tour - this is an engaging and in-depth experience that that looks at food culture throughout time and helps connect our current obsession with food to our cultural history.
In this explorative journey you’ll be led by a professional art historian through a visual feast - you’ll travel to Ancient Egypt and learn about beer brewing; understand the oftentimes violent role that sugar played in America’s history, and maybe finish off with a cocktail in the modern jazz age.
Your contribution will help us with the costs associated with researching collections at museums in Boston, Chicago and DC, and writing new material that is specific for each city. Your funds will also help us with the promotional costs associated with getting the word out about this critically acclaimed tour.
#3 Women in Leadership Team Building Tour
We are developing a series of team-building tours focused on Women in Leadership. We understand how especially important raising women up is, especially now - and we believe that art can help start some of these conversations.
These team-building tours will focus on several themes: networking, telling your story, inspiration, failure, success, risk-taking, and collaboration. The art historian guide will provide a framework for discussion, using select key artworks that as inspiration. We’ll touch on everything from the role of women in art and beyond; from how female subjects have been represented throughout time, to the the often-times untold stories of women artists themselves.
What Makes Us Different?
Our guides aren’t docents or scripted actors - they’re art historians, professors at research institutions and art world professionals who have completed years of education and research; they have wealth of experience and a ton of insider knowledge that they’d love to share with you. And most importantly, we keep groups small so that the guides can focus on customization and making the experience truly unique for you!
Risks and challenges
We are on track towards building our super-star team of guides in Boston, Chicago and D.C. but because the holiday season is our busiest time of the year, there is a chance that we will not be able to deliver all of our rewards until February 2018.
If everyone who contributes to our campaign opts for a group tour, there will be some additional administrative time required to schedule in more guides and additional group tours. But we promise, we will make sure everyone who wants a tour, gets one!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
