Wasp-Man Costume for Only $1500!
We're planning to make multiple Wasp-Men costumes for the film, and now we're offering a second costume to one lucky contributor for only $1500! It will be one of the full-body rubber monster costumes made by our FX costume and makeup artist, Julian Bonfiglio, who was one of the final 4 contestants on the latest season of Syfy's Face Off. You'll get all of the lower-level rewards, including a t-shirt.
Wasp-Men From Mars! is a sci-fi short film inspired by the monster invasion flicks of the 1950’s but with the more modern sensibility of today’s sci-fi and horror.
It starts in 1959 with three teenagers on a stargazing trip that turns into an evening of heartbreak, jealousy, and sexual confusion — and then giant wasps from outer space invade Earth and make things even worse. The teens need to put their feelings aside if they're going to survive the night. (These are teenagers we’re talking about.)
Wasp-Men From Mars! is my love letter to creature features.
My first exposure to these movies, like many people my age, was through Mystery Science Theater 3000. Yes, they were lampooned for their writing, acting, costumes, etc., but I admired them for trying to do something big on very little money and tackling important subjects like Communism and nuclear war by using rubber monsters. Plus, they were fun to watch, even without Joel, Mike, and the robots.
Sci-fi and horror have matured since then, but a lot of my favorite films and TV shows, like Tremors, Buffy, and The World's End, have been influenced by those earlier films. One of my favorite shows, Doctor Who, started as the BBC equivalent of those creature features, and carries on the rubber monster tradition to this day.
With Wasp-Men From Mars!, I hope to honor those earlier films and merge them with the sensibility of modern sci-fi/horror, where the monsters are used as a way to explore characters and their relationships in addition to giving them something to fight. My hope is that audiences will not only identify with our main characters, Suzie, James, and Timmy, but that the fun and spectacle of the film will encourage them to seek out the original creature features, like Invaders From Mars and THEM!
In the end I hope to create a short film that's fun, scary, overdramatic, and at its heart, very sincere. And with really cool Wasp-Men.
Wasp-Men From Mars! is an ambitious short film, and the most expensive and time-consuming part is the Wasp-Men costumes. These won't be cheap, campy rubber suits — we're going to create some scary monsters.
The costumes are being made by special effects makeup artist Julian Bonfiglio, a contestant on Season 8 of Syfy’s Face Off. Our Kickstarter goal will cover the costs for three Wasp-Men costumes for the film.
Our shoot is scheduled for June 2015, with a November 2015 premiere at the historic Castro Theatre in San Francisco.
The crew is mostly made up of members from the Scary Cow filmmaking cooperative. We’re currently casting in the Bay Area and Los Angeles.

Risks and challenges
Filmmaking is always a risky venture. Problems can pop up at any stage of production. You’re dependent on location owners, the actors’ schedules, and much, much more. We’re also using rubber monster costumes in this film, which has its own challenges and could lead to delays.
However, Wasp-Men From Mars! is being made by an experienced and passionate crew. Many of us have spent years working on independent short films. We’ve overcome many obstacles in the past. We’re dedicated to this movie and we’ll get it done, come hell or high water.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
