Pedion URBAN handpainted Terrain Tiles for Wargames & RPGs

£15,561

We are expanding Pedion Modular Battlefields with a selection of Urban themed Tiles! These 30cm x 30cm (1'x1') Tiles connect magnetically and can be configured to create any Urban board. They come in 3 distinct themes: "Rustic", "Medieval" and "Modern" which cover a wide range of Urban environments and gaming themes. You can arrange them to simulate hundreds of street layouts to fit any size of playing area, different for each of your games. And, since they take up minimal space,  you can store them in a small living-room cupboard.

Do you want to see out Urban Battlefield in action? Here it's the video from a WWII battle using them to full effect:

Video courtesy of TabletopBattle crew (thank you guys!). They use the "Medieval" themed tiles along with transition tiles, to create the French city of Carentan and its outskirts. They show off how well the Urban Battlefields work with the original Pedion sets, and how great they are when used in play. The battle is inspired by the advance on the city of Carentan by the US 101st, after Normandy, as it was depicted in the tv show Band of Brothers.

We introduced Pedion as a Terrain System; a way for wargamers, role-players and modelling hobbyists to recreate any battlefield* they wish to play on, without sacrificing aesthetics or requiring much room for storage. Pedion is an emerging company in Terrain building, having already run a very successful Kickstarter in 2015 with the debut of our extensive Modular Battlefields line. These sets have exceeded backer expectations in quality, gameplay and aesthetics, receiving excellent reviews.

The principle of Pedion is that the board will consist of a number of square 'tiles', each depicting specific terrain features. The tiles are 30x30cm and only 1cm thick (1’x1’x0.4”), connecting to each other without any restriction on orientation. They are handpainted with realistic features while still being practical for miniature movement and combat. By combining the tiles, players can form multiple layouts thereby covering most table sizes. The tiles are very lightweight, durable and take up minimal space.

*ped·i·on, noun \ˈpedēən, from Ancient Greek πεδίον (“plain, field, flat surface”), πεδίον μάχης = battlefield

We designed the Urban Battlefields' tiles in a way that:

  • allow the gamer to quickly recreate street networks and the chaotic fabric of an urban environment in multiple configurations, different for each game.
  • look beautiful and authentic but at the same time be practical for gaming.
  • work with other Pedion Battlefields tiles.
  • enable the placement of buildings, fences and scenic terrain pieces details from any manufacturer, without stealing the spotlight.
  • adhere to all Pedion design parameters: full molecularity, simple connectivity, thin, lightweight, durable, easily stored.

The Urban tiles will be made from Polystyrene based on PVC sheets, with magnetic corners to attach to each other.

Why the Kickstarter?

The main reason for this expansion campaign is actually the same as for our original Battlefields: we want to gauge if people like the idea behind these Urban tiles. By running this campaign we will be able to find out which designs gamers prefer, to flesh out specific ideas and new stretch goals with our supporters. We do not want this to be simply a "preorder" phase, but a chance to bring supporters to our drawing board before we start actual production.

Trying to encompass the look and feel of every urban corner in every era and genre is impossible. Even more, Pedion tiles are intended for gaming, not for dioramas, however good they may look! So from all the options, we decided on three (3) generalised urban terrain Themes. We believe they will cover multiple periods and that the buildings and scenery placed on them will do the job of specialising the board's purpose, be it a historical or fantasy setting.

The intended 3'x3' Pedion Urban Set, "Rustic" theme
The intended 3'x3' Pedion Urban Set, "Rustic" theme

The first theme will combine classic cobblestone roads with a 'dirt'/soil texture on non-paved areas, these spaces being reserved for buildings. The soil texture is enhanced with patches of green vegetation and there are extensive grass tufts on the road sides where the water usually collects. Intended to be neutral to suit any geographic location, the dirt colouration is completely new to our tiles.

The style works quite well on any Urban/suburban environment where the people may have used cobbles to pave some of their streets. It fits Rustic settlements, rural areas, villages, small Towns, even ancient cities if the residing civilization used stone on roads. By leaving open spaces in-between the houses, one can create smaller alleys and dirt paths branching away from the main cobblestone roads. There are no signs of a drainage system, so that the Style can be used in areas and eras where an underground one would not exist.

Perhaps the most flexible theme, it can be used in many Wargame or RPG scenarios. This theme uses two different cobblestone patterns; a smaller recessed one for the roads and a larger embossed one for the building spaces. There is an irregularly shaped string of stones on roadsides to act as a primitive sidewalk and there are drainage grates implying the existence of basic sewers. There will be an option for each backer to include sewers and manholes or not. This theme can be used to represent the basis of multiple urban environments, especially medieval areas, fantasy settlements, ancient frozen citadels, and many European city centres up to the present day!

For those gaming in the modern or futuristic era, we've designed a theme where the road surface is asphalt, the open areas are paved with large geometric stones, there are proper pedestrian sidewalks which protrude 1mm from road level and are 2.5cm (1") wide. There are drainage facilities, such as manhole covers.

Road lines are possible but may limit the option of playing in different scales. Wider road widths may be made available via stretch goals during the campaign.

To simplify pledge selection and to facilitate future production, we have grouped the rewards into three basic sets: Village, Town and City. This will allow backers to set up a 2'x2', 3'x3' or a 4'x4' gaming area. You choose one of these sets as a reward and you will then choose its Theme (Rustic, Medieval or Modern) after the Kickstarter finishes. These sets may be expanded and upgraded through add-ons and/or stretch goals. Please keep in mind that the tiles in the photographs are prototypes and the final products may vary slightly. Also, the themes shown are for demonstration purposes and all sets can be ordered in all themes.

Each Urban Battlefields Set is comprised of a number of tiles in one of four (4) basic designs. These can be connected and arranged to create any layout you can think of. Apart from these Reward Set designs, more can be made available through unlocking Stretch Goals.

You can take advantage of this Kickstarter's prices and shipping to pre-order a number of add-ons to your terrain. To include any of these add-ons in your Battlefield reward, add the extra cost mentioned in each add-on to your pledge. You can do this through the "manage your pledge" button at the top of this page.

NEW: You can manage your pledge and AddOns by downloading and filling up our "tile selection" spreadsheet!

Risks and challenges

This is not Pedion's first foray into Kickstarter; we successfully ran another Kickstarter project which is in the final stages of fulfillment. We are ready to apply the lessons learned during the first KS to better tackle risks and challenges in the current campaign.

We can identify three possible issues that may arise in such a project, and which actually trouble many Kickstarters: faulty development, funds miscalculation and time delays.

Production-wise, we feel quite confident; it is one of the things that Pedion has excelled at so far and we plan to keep doing so. The Urban Battlefield tiles have been extensively tested with multiple prototypes and playtesting to ensure that they will operate as intended.
All the production is conducted locally and mostly in-house, with an established production line running for 1.5 year now. Therefore there is no risk involved through relying on factories abroad, faulty prototyping or due to long shipping times and customs clearances. We already have a separate team dedicated to the production of the Urban tiles, the workshop is set up and some of the molds have been cast. The Urban tiles represents more straightforward, specialised work for the Pedion staff after the complexity of Modular Battlefields

We will be very watchful of miscalculation of funds and time, since they prove the bane of many a Kickstarter. One of the good things that came out of our first Kickstarter is that we can be even better prepared for this one.
In particular, we have made extremely conservative assessments of the numbers in the Urban Battlefield line. The fund allocation reflects not only material cost and work hours, but all appropriate overhead costs; we can now estimate the full extent of these, having the experience of running production for over a year and a half.

In terms of time management, we used our hands-on experience to recalculate all aspects of how long delivery will take. To avoid delays we have reduced complexity by keeping the final products simple and straightforward, without many variant options. This will allow a streamlined production line of multiple copies. The delivery date is set to one year to give ample time for the production run.

As a final note, this new campaign will by no means affect or influence the current production and fulfillment of the previous Modular Battlefields campaign, or vice-versa.
