George Breakfast is recording the album of his career!
finally it all comes together..world class producer, killer players who are also old friends, in a fabulous studio..my best album ever!
"Probably the best singer songwriter you've never heard..."
Hello there. My name is George Breakfast and I've been writing songs and performing them on street corners, in pubs and clubs, at festivals, on radio and even a bit of TV, on both sides of the Atlantic for over 40 years. I've made a number of records over the years both as a solo artist and as part of a number of different bands....and now I'm getting ready to make the album of my career!
I have a bunch of songs written and a band of world class players lined up to play them. Here is a video of us performing one of the songs destined for the new album..
I'm launching this campaign to ask you to consider pre-ordering the album and so help raise the money to make it all happen.
My last proper studio album began its life in August 2007.
I went into a local studio with bass stalwart Fabian Bonner and drummer Ian Pickering and over 2 days we recorded basic tracks for 18 songs. So far so good..
A week or so later, the mother of my two youngest children called me, and for reasons I need not go into, asked how I'd feel about having them come to live with me and go to school in Cambridge. Of course I immediately said, "Yes!". This was the right decision and it turned out happily for all concerned. We spent 3 school years under the same roof, after which their mama moved to Cambridge and they went to live with her.
I tell you this so you might understand how my album sat neglected on a dusty shelf for some three and a half years. I'm sure I need not list the many facets of parenting teenagers. Suffice it to say it was an inspiring and rewarding time, but also a demanding and time consuming one.
Eventually I began work on organising and finishing the work we had begun. My endlessly patient friend Jono Manson helped me choose the best performances and I went to his studio in Santa Fe NM to do some guitar tracking and sing all the songs through his fabulous microphones!
Finally in late 2012 I went back to Santa Fe and we mixed the album together. So the album, 'Love Will Get The Better Of You' was released in January 2013, five and a half years after we began! It is a credit to all involved that it still sounds pretty fresh. heres a couple of reviews...
"There’s a raspy Americana edge to his voice, and a gospel-inflected strut to his songs..." Hyperbolium
"...vocals that layer soul onto the tunes like honey dripping off a biscuit." The Alternate Root
"....has an authenticity that few artists can match." Adobe and Teardrops
This time we plan to get the whole thing done in a matter of weeks. We are asking a lot of ourselves, and YOU!...but we believe its worth it.
Help us fund this project, every penny counts!...
Firstly, Jono is going to produce, overseeing all stages of the project.
This is a great blessing. His experience, talent and attention to detail are second to none; never mind that he is one of my closest and dearest friends!
Secondly we have a great basic band lined up. Mark Clark, who has played with a cornucopia of diverse and wonderful artists, will be drumming.
Playing bass alongside him will be my long time friend and collaborator Fabian Bonner. Fabian is much in demand in our home town, Cambridge, and is easily the most versatile bassist around. Recently he and I have also been writing songs together and a couple of those should wind up on the album. I will be singing and playing guitar or mandolin, and to complete the line-up, we are lucky to have engaged the legendary New York keyboard and accordion player Neil Thomas.
An artist in his own rite, Neil's virtuosity and sensitivity are renowned...no matter what is going down, he always comes up with something to make it sound better! He and I have shared many musical adventures and I look forward very much to this new one.
The plan is for Neil to fly over to join Fabian and I a week before we go to the studio. We will spend that week rehearsing the songs and getting comfortable with them, and playing a couple of local gigs. On the Thursday of that week, Jono and Mark will show up, and Friday and Saturday will be devoted to full band rehearsals, culminating in a final local gig with the whole band.
On the Sunday, we will all head down to the legendary Rockfield Studios and begin recording the next day.
We are so excited at the prospect of working there! We'll be there for a week, after which Mark & Neil will fly back to the US, and Jono, Fabian and I will return to Cambridge and spend a couple of days adding overdubs with a bevy of fabulous local talent at our friend Tom Bainbridge's studio. We also have a handful of illustrious international friends who are going to contribute parts which they will deliver to Jono digitally. Details of who these eminent guests are can be found on the video.
Jono will then take the music back to his brand new, state of the art Kitchen Sink Studio in Santa Fe, New Mexico, and mix it there. The Final mixes will go to David Glasser at Airshow Mastering who has mastered over 80 Grammy nominees as well as winning 2 Grammy awards himself.
With the mastered tracks we plan to manufacture CDs and vinyl copies of the album.
Please select one of the rewards on the right. We need your help to make it happen!...
None of the many facets of this project come cheap! Musicians of this calibre need to get paid, and the American members of the team have to be flown back and forth across the Atlantic. The whole band needs to be fed, watered and stabled. The studio costs of recording, mixing and mastering are considerable. We then need to pay for the design, manufacture and packaging of our finished product. Finally, we need to spend some money promoting the album, something I've been very negligent over in the past. With the modern world being what it is, its vital to get some professional help drawing people's attention to our work.
Its a lot of money we are asking for, so I figure you should know in some detail what is costing what. So here goes....
Recording & Mixing £7930, Mastering £1400, Airfares £2400, Musicians Fees £5700, Ground Transport £250, Food etc £1000, Manufacturing Costs(CDs & vinyl) £1560, Promotion £2800, Rewards Fulfilment(manufacture of t shirts, stickers, art prints + cost of mailers & postage) £1800, Kickstarter Fees £2900 Contingencies £1260... TOTAL £29000.
These figures have been rounded up slightly to allow for fluctuating exchange rates, but there's no padding. This is what its going to cost....
I have come up with what I hope is a wide range of rewards in return for your contributions.
What I have to offer is various combinations of my goods and services, as well as a couple of original art options.
If any of you think of something I could provide that I haven't thought of, please get in touch and we'll figure something out!
Help make our project a reality!
This crowdfunding approach is a first for me. Back in my youth, us musical types used to dream of record deals that paid all recording and manufacturing and promotion costs as well as big advances to go buy all manner of glitzy gear and clobber. Needless to say, that dream never materialised for me, which is probably just as well! Its no secret that today that business model is long gone. For the most part, whatever we artists hope to do, we have to muster support and do it ourselves. We are the music business....you and me!
We are asking a lot I know, but not a penny will be wasted, and we believe the end result will more than justify the considerable outlay.
It remains for me to thank you with all my heart in anticipation of your signing up to be part of our joint endeavour. We cannot do it without you, but I am confident that with your help, we can make a really great album!
Risks and challenges
I have never done this before! By which I mean I have never come looking for the money in advance to finance a project.
I have made one record after another, flying by the seat of my pants, recording bits and pieces wherever I can, on the cheap, when everyone else is asleep, getting it done somehow.
This time, with your help, I will have the best musicians, the best studios, and the best producer to put it all together. I already have the music, some 30 songs or more and counting.
So the biggest challenge for me is raising the bread!
Musicians are the most adaptable tribe of folks I know. Everyone involved in this project has been earning their living in this way for a long time. Disasters and setbacks have befallen us all, and we have always found ways to keep the show on the road. It is what we do!
I am confident that with the money in place, this project will go forward to completion no matter what, and the result will be something we will all feel justly proud of.
Please, help make it happen for our project. Thank you so much!...Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
