Genius Games presents Dr. Livingston’s Human Anatomy Puzzles, a line of larger-than-life jigsaw puzzles.  The puzzles feature stunning art created just for us by Mesa Schumacher, a Certified Medical Illustrator from Johns Hopkins University!

The puzzles display beautifully in a home, office, or classroom. From the quality of each piece to the vibrant colors and intricate visual detail, enjoy an enlightening, enriching puzzle experience!

Each box is a durable keepsake designed to look like a vintage medical text, including the box sides (which make the ‘spine’ and ‘pages’ of the book) and back. These puzzles may be displayed together to create one larger picture of the human body, from head to abdomen. If you all like and support this project, we have four more puzzles planned for you to collect as a full, seven-volume set. The puzzles still to come will allow you to put together your own ten foot human!

Mesa Schumacher is a Certified Medical Illustrator who studied at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.  She has worked in scientific and medical visualization for over ten years and loves problems that wrinkle her brain. See more of Mesa's work at www.mesaschumacher.com

In this first volume, you’ll assemble a cross-cut section that gives you a clear view of the components of the head and neck. You’ll see how they interlock and overlap with marvelous complexity. Piece together the brain, and the thick, bony skull which protects the brain, and the jaw and teeth. You’ll assemble one eye and the muscles that support and move it. As you build the neck you’ll marvel at how it serves as an information superhighway - protecting the spinal cord, a concourse of blood vessels and nerves, and housing the esophagus, larynx, trachea, and thyroid gland. Complete the puzzle by fitting in the muscles of the neck which support and move the heavy head.

In this second volume, you will assemble a cross-cut section of the human body that gives you a clear view of the entire rib cage and its contents. You’ll see how they interlock and overlap with marvelous intricacy. As you assemble this puzzle you’ll frame the organs with crosscuts of the the sternum, ribs, and thoracic vertebrae. Inside that protective cage lie a wealth of vital and vulnerable organs; the trachea carries air to the two lungs, and sitting between them, the four-chambered heart pumps blood through the pulmonary circulatory loop of the lungs. From there, once the blood is rich with fresh oxygen, it begins its journey through the systemic circulatory system to carry that oxygen to the rest of the body.

In this third volume, you will assemble a cross-cut section of the human body that gives you a clear view of the largest cavity in the body and its major contents. You’ll see how they interlock and overlap with marvelous economy. Piece together the frame of the puzzle and you’ll see how the vital organs are suspended in the abdominal cavity by loose connective tissue called mesentery, a substance that contains blood vessels and nerves, and which also allows the organs to move as necessary. Fill out the abdominal cavity by assembling the body’s lower digestive tract including the stomach, small and large intestines, and the supportive pancreas, liver, and gallbladder, each an impressive machine in its own right.

Risks and challenges

This is our 11th Kickstarter, and we’ve learned a lot about streamlining the production and shipping process. All projects have some level of risk though, and ours is no different. In an effort to reduce the overall cost of production (and ultimately lower our funding goal) we are working with a highly recommended manufacturing company. We've had a good experience working with them and are excited to continue strengthening our connections.

Our turnaround for delivery is expected to be similar to our recent projects as we continue to build on our experiences with a variety of manufacturers. We do not expect delays, but anything can happen half a world away just as it could domestically. We rely on our suppliers just as you rely on us, and hope for a relationship of mutual understanding.
