Our Kickstarter Book project has a goal of creating a 100 Page 8.5 x 11 inch book about Noel Rockmore & Shirley Marvin and “Our Journey to the Discovery of Rockmore.” The bound book will have a soft color cover and 50 B&W & 50 Pages Color. In order to meet the cost for a minimum run of 300 books plus shipping, we need to raise $15,000. We have 250 pages prepared that will need to be culled down to 100 or perhaps more if we exceed our goal.
$20 Reward - LaGrange Art Museum 80 Pg. Color Catalog
We are quite confident in Stephens Printing of LaGrange, GA on being able to get the book published in a timely manner to meet our Dec 1, 2013 fulfillment goal. We have worked with them before on the 80 Page 2011 LaGrange Art Museum Rockmore Catalog which has been acclaimed in art circles. This book WILL NOT be a coffee table art book, or a retrospective catalog book. It WILL BE a storybook for general audiences about the Journey we have all been on the Discovery of Noel Rockmore. Each copy will be signed, dated & numbered by the three of us and shipped to you for free in the domestic US.
$40 Reward - Noel Rockmore & Shirley Marvin - "Our Journey to the Discovery of Rockmore " Book signed, numbered & dated by Shirley, Rich & Tee Marvin
For the last 7 years we, Rich & Tee & Shirley Marvin, have been documenting the artist Noel Rockmore and all of his artworks as well as filming and transcribing every article, story and bit of information that we could research (6500 artworks & 7000 artifacts). We created a Rockmore web site, a Rockmore Facebook Fan page, helped on a Rockmore Wikipedia site as well as sites for his world famous artist parents, Gladys Rockmore Davis & Floyd MacMillan Davis.
For the first 4 years it was slow going trying to get anyone to pay this artist attention. Then we had a major break in 2011 when International Curator Dan Cameron selected Noel Rockmore for a Show in Marfa Texas, "The World According to New Orleans." A major article by the famous writer John Ed Bradley, “The Tomb of Noel Rockmore” in the Garden & Gun Magazine in 2011 led to national attention. The 2011-2012 LaGrange Art Museum Show "Creative Obscurity; The Genius Noel Rockmore" featured 250 works across three venues. An AP Article on New Years day 2012 that called Rockmore - The Picasso of New Orleans really put us on the map. Most recently, the Louisnana Endowment for Humanities had PHD Rick Gruber do an academic article now in the KNOW.LA Cultural Encyclopedia. Now Rockmore is popular again and popping up in exhibitions across the country. From July 20 through October 6th, Rockmore will be featured in a major show at the Louisiana Arts & Science Museum in Baton Rouge, LA - The Faith & The Fury: Rockmore and his Patron (Shirley Marvin) with over 50 Masterworks. We hope you will be inspired to attend.

For Shirley Marvin, this project began 53 years ago when she first met the artist Noel Rockmore in his first trip to New Orleans in 1960.Her interest in art led her to Larry Borenstien’s art store in the French Quarter. It was here that she became part of Larry’s Saturday morning Get Together’s at the Gallery where she soon met Noel Rockmore, an artist who had attained fame in New York early as Noel Davis and then changed his name to Rockmore when he came to New Orleans. Larry’s gatherings included artist, developers and many of the French Quarter characters that made up the tight knit, protective and eclectic community. She became an early patron and collector of the artist Rockmore as he also became a part of The French Quarter Community. Shirley was to be his patron for the next 35 years until his death.

The “Noel Rockmore Project” began one year after Katrina in Sept. of 2006. Tee and Rich Marvin of Cape Cod took the opportunity to help Rich's mom, Shirley Marvin, go through her storage in New Orleans, LA which had not been visited since Katrina. We knew she had a lot of Noel Rockmore artwork and asked her exactly how many paintings she had in storage so we could plan on how long we would need to document them. Shirley said, "I’m not sure, I think I have somewhere between 20 to 70 pieces." Rich said, “Mom that's a big range!” She replied, "I'm 84 years old, I don't remember, there are a lot of paintings and I could use the help sorting them out."
So we went down to New Orleans and put on the hazmat suits, because there was some mold in the storage, and we start what we think will be 2 days to document 20-70 paintings. Turns out Shirley had 3 mostly undamaged storage units with 300+ boxes, many with multiple paintings. We found over 30 complete art books with 700 works that had never been seen. We also found several boxes with brochures from the gallery shows, 30 years worth of letters from Rockmore to Shirley Marvin, newspaper articles, photos, partial manuscripts for Noel books and a 30 minute documentary "Rockmore" that Shirley produced in 1992. The final total of Noel Rockmore artwork in the “Shirley Marvin Collection” was over 1400 works of art and 2000 pieces of memorabilia!

To be perfectly honest, we were stunned, why on earth had she preserved all of this from one artist for over 30 years and put much of her life's savings into it.Shirley said, “I believe that Noel Rockmore was an artistic genius and an unrecognized American Master of the 20th century. The only way to prove it at a future date would be to have a significant bulk of the work together in one place.”
Since that time, Noel Rockmore has gone from 2 internet entries to 50,000+, there is a web page, FaceBook Fan Page, Wikipedia entry, major articles and showings across the country. We are on the ladder to recognition but we really need your help to go up to the next step. This Noel Rockmore Shirley Marvin Kickstarter book will document "Our Journey to the Discovery of Rockmore." Please consider helping us and having your own part in saving an undiscovered American Master and recognizing the 91 year old woman that saved him.
Thanks in advance,
Rich & Tee & Shirley Marvin

Risks and challenges
Our biggest challenge turned out to be getting our huge database of folks Thirtysomething and above to be able to do the actual Kickstarter process and the Amazon component. It was terrifying for over 50% of our people and they felt hurt they could not send a check and just get a book. I gave Kickstarter our suggestion of a Technically Terrified Pledge Button to help folks with a step by step, chat, phone help and got a form response. They best watch out or someone else will do it and cash in big time.
Unfortunately, the biggest risk in working on a project with anyone that is 91 is that their health could take a turn for the worse and all of our schedules could be compromised. The good news is that Shirley is in great health and her mom lived on her own until she passed away at 98 in Boston. This project and this book has really kept her mind and body active and given her a chance to fulfill her life dream of having Noel Rockmore recognized.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
