UPDATE: We no longer need the stretch goal to get the production-quality game components as previously thought. Our goal of $7,000 will get us there.
The Language of Magic came about from my long-time appreciation for the world which Richard Garriott created. Specifically the MMO, Ultima Online. As a kid, teenager, and young adult I put many hours into the game and, even though it has been running for just over 20 years, I still go back to it from time to time just to relive the experience. It is a masterpiece of a game that will never get old and my only hope is that we created something that pays the proper respect.
Before we get too far into this, I just want to say THANK YOU! After sharing images and gameplay photos of The Language of Magic around social media we knew that we had to do something. We knew we had to do everything in our power to get this game out ASAP to those of you who were asking for - nearly demanding - a copy of the game. You spoke, we listened. Therefore, we are doing a mini-campaign to produce a minimum of 250 copies of the game. We will reduce our profits so you can have the game at a fair price sooner than originally planned.
UPDATE: It is now 500 copies.
We are fully aware that this is not the most lucrative way to go about this but it's not about money, truly. We do this because we love it. I know that sounds cliche but we want to prove it to you. As such, we are offering the Print & Play files from the most recent beta set of the game right here, right now, for free. Just e-mail ShawnH@GeeksCollab.com to get the link to the files. The link to the rules can be found below in the Game Overview section.
The Language of Magic is a deck-building card game which can be played in two ways: 2-player duel – players attempt to build an arsenal of powerful Words of Magic to overcome their opponent, or 2-4 player cooperative or solitary play – players work together to battle the Lich and its minions, defeating it before it can cast its final spell. As a solo or co-op player, you take on the role of the Avatar, chosen heroes of spirituality...
...who are to do battle with the Master of Hythloth, the vile Nefarious Lord Zorhkar and his minions of the abyss.
There are 26 words of power, each representing their own idea. These words can be combined to make powerful spells to harm, mend, protect, or alter the creatures and the world around you. Some words, the incantations, direct the polarity of the spell. Will you create, negate, or steal? Other words add elemental powers, some can add to or multiply the effect. There are so many possible spells, you will need to play it for yourself to see what you can come up with.
The rules are currently only hosted online and can be found here: https://www.geekscollab.com/the-language-of-magic-rules-and-overview.html
UPDATE: These are being reformatted and will be included in the box.
For those of you who decide the reward tiers with the special dice and dice bag, you will have an option to pick between purple dice...
...or clear dice...
UPDATE: We now have blue and pink options as well.
...and you will also receive a dice bag, perfectly sized for the five dice, that looks similar to this but featuring the same Ankh as the game box.
All of these items are being provided by Caveloot.com, selling LARP, Armor, Weapons, Games & Supplies, Occult, Geek Garb, Halloween items and more!
Risks and challenges
Yes, this is an early version of the game meaning that there will be another one. however, these files were my original vision for the game; black and white with the intent of paying respects to the game it was inspired by. It is intended to resemble the early game manuals. The future version, which has an unknown completion date, will include more runes, more minions, and totally revamped full-color graphics. The next campaign will be a full run with some pretty exciting stretch goals. That makes this version of the game a specialty item as the number printed during this run will be all that is ever made.
UPDATE: All components will be production-quality.
UPDATE: If we earn enough we will be using a maximum-quality print shop and printing 500 copies, rather than 250.
We do not see any hold-ups on production. The print shop already has the final files and have given us an ETA based on the completed date of this campaign. But, in the case of a hiccup, you will be notified immediately. We strongly believe in open lines of communication and will do all in our power to keep it going.
UPDATE: If anyone backs at the tiers which include name selection, we will send the updated files to the print shop prior to the end of the funding period. We will NOT need to hold up production because of this.
For those of you who purchase the special dice and dice bag, we will do all in our power to get them to you before Christmas but there is a lead time on the bags. We think there is enough time to get them done but that is a moving target and cannot guarantee it. Along those same lines, we have placed a limit on the number of backers for those two reward levels but if both reward levels are maximized then there will be a longer lead time for the dice.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
