WHAT: I'm making short film!
It's a Kung Fu movie, and a love-letter to classic kung fu cinema of the Shaw Brothers and Jackie Chan. It'll have the fast-paced action comedy you love, but no falling from tall buildings. I can't afford that kind of insurance.
WHY: The world needs great action that involves ZERO shaky-cam and lots of comedy.
I started studying kung fu at around age 9 (along with my brother) and shortly thereafter I watched all the kung fu movies I could get my hands on. I was inspired by the athleticism, stories, comedy, and philosophy. Also, as a guy who's 5'4"... the fact that the big strong guy didn't always win was a big plus.
For example, Jackie Chan is often the underdog in his stories. He doesn't win because he wants to fight or is the best. He wins because he doesn't give up. That's the sort of story I want to tell.
HOW: Very carefully... with talented entertainment industry professionals!
I've been planning this film for well over a year. I have lists of music references, fight choreography inspirations, makeup & costume ideas, and stick figure storyboards (drawing is not one of my many talents).
Everyone involved is also a very capable entertainment industry professional. These are people whose work I have seen and trust. And they're all amazing people that are fun to work with too. The quality of the product is important, but so is having fun on set!
I'll be releasing the film online for free for everyone to see. I'll also be sending it to various film festivals, cuz I hear there's a severe lack of kung fu comedies at most of them.
THE PLOT: The perfect kung fu movie date is ruined when a burglar steals the TV.
This is ultimately the story of an underdog character who wins -- not because he is bigger or stronger -- but because he learns to believe in himself. He wins because he does not give up.
Of course, between the fight starting and him achieving his goal, there's plenty of challenges and hilarity along the way.
This protagonist is not a super hero... he's a sub-hero. Half the fun of watching a Jackie Chan film is watching him fail, and fail again. Until he doesn't. Same goes for this project!
Here's who's confirmed so far! There will be many more people involved, but some of them will come onboard closer to our shoot this spring -- and some I'm waiting for formal agreements before posting them here.
Gedaly Guberek (The Guy / Co-Director / Writer / Producer)
Reuben Guberek (Co-Director)
This dude is awesome, and not just cuz we're related. He's a capable director, you can tell because he looks very pensive in this photo.
Tim Storms (Fight Choreographer)
This guy knows what he's doing. He's my stunt/fight choreography teacher, and has a long list of super-impressive credits on IMDB.
RJ Howard (The Burglar)
This may be the only time you'll see his face. He'll be wearing a mask in the film! You can see RJ kick me in the face in the project video above!
Kelly Kula (The Girl)
I mean... who wouldn't wanna go on a kung fu movie date with this talented lady? Kelly is also a kick-ass martial artist.
Barrett Perlman (Producer)Even though this gal COULD kick everyone's ass, she's staying behind the scenes to keep you all safe. She's a Master Problem Solver, although ultimately I just like to have her around.
Ryan Basham (Producer)This guy is an award winning TV & film producer. He also makes great gluten-free mac & cheese.
We're raising at least $10,000 to cover all of the items listed below...
See? We're fiscally responsible n stuff.
If this were a short film with just some simple dialogue scenes, it'd be much cheaper. But the viasual style of this film -- and the fact that it's an action movie -- requires more resources!
Action takes much longer to film, so we need extra shoot days, more food to energize those of us who will be doing intense physical activity all day long.
Even at this budget level, we're bootstrapping a lot. I do believe in paying my cast and crew as much as I can afford, but I'm not paying myself to keep costs down. My reward is making this film... and I've wanted to make it for a while now, so I'm very excited to finally do it!
Everyone in the world gets to see the finished film for free online. But you can only get cool perks by backing this project!
Here's what you can get...
We'll keep going if we can! $10K is the minimum needed to execute the project with the quality it deserves. And that 10K doesn't include my own money I'm already putting into the project. And none of the budget is for paying myself either. Totally worth it!
But if we get more, even better!
There's a job for every dollar. If we raise...
$12,500 - Better production design!
We can spend more on props, costumes, and the overall look of the film. Also higher more crew to make the process smoother.
$15,000 - Better Editing + Color, More Original Music!
This allows for extra budget to give to an editor, colorist, and composer. These are difficult, expensive, and time-consuming jobs so more budget here will really increase the quality of the project!
$25,000 - Burgled 2!
We'll make a sequel! I've already got a plan for Burgled 2, and it's awesome. Heck, I have an outline for Burgled 3... But I don't wanna get ahead of myself. We're making this one now, but more $ means more movie!
Risks and challenges
Film production is no easy task, but my crew and I have large collective amount of experience.
To minimize risks with the production itself, we've eliminated many variables to make things simple. The action centers in a single location, the cast is small, and the sound needed on set is minimal. I figure that limits inspire creativity... so we set ourself many limits.
We've also minimized the number of physical goods involved with the perks so that the logistics of getting you your rewards aren't super complicated.
And I'm putting any money I can save into this project to make sure we realize the vision (and you get your perks) to the best of our abilities.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
