Geckota simply grew from a hobby. Back in 2010, our founder Jon Quinn collected, studied and enjoyed watches in his spare time. He was an avid watch geek, which led to an idea:
To sell watches and watch straps to like-minded enthusiasts.
Fast-forward a couple of years; now trading under the Geckota name, Jon started developing his own watches and watch straps. This meant he had full control over the design, materials, specifications, movements and most importantly, a carefully considered price point.
Since then we've established ourselves in the micro-brand watch world, and released six different models of watches with over 30 variations. These include pilots’ watches, divers’ watches and chronographs. These models have all been hugely successful. They’ve either sold out completely or, if still on sale, have limited stock availability.
We are confident that now is the right time to make our first luxury watch.
In 2017, our core business standards and vision are still at the heart of all we do. Our ambition is as strong as ever and we're excited to announce the next step of our journey - into the world of Kickstarter.
As a team of enthusiasts, we all share the same passion for all types of watches. We're big fans of vintage watch design and for nearly a decade have created watches that pay respect to older styles.
When we came up with the idea of creating our first luxury watch, deciding on a diver was an easy choice. It's a watch category that all the team enjoys. We also know our customers well enough to understand that they share this passion and its rich history!
Developing the D1 has been a year-long process including many different samples, versions and variations until we reached a product that the team was happy with.
During the early stages, we looked back at classic diving watches from the 1950s and 60s as inspiration. From our research, we noted three standout features from this period of watchmaking:
- The practicality and appeal of simple, legible design
- The use of strong, reliable materials in classic tool watches
- The unique subtle details such as case design, dial finishing and purposeful use of colour.
With this in mind, we set about designing a watch that draws on elements of classic tool watches from the past while including elements of genuinely original design. The result is a watch that can be worn at the beach or the office.
Available in three dial variations, each version brings their own unique characteristics and style.
The most classically timeless version is the D1 Noir. This features a gloss black sandwich dial with a deep enamel effect. The dial has also been lacquered to bring the strong black colour out. If you want classic, understated style, look no further.
The D1 Mercury takes this classic diver and gives it a more contemporary look. With its stainless steel bezel, this is the choice to make if turning heads is your main aim!
Thirdly, there’s the D1 Cobalt. It features a gloss blue, sandwich, sunburst dial with deep enamel effect that’s been lacquered so sunlight transforms the dial in a way that no photograph can properly show!
All three options feature subtle red accents on the bezel, the tip of the seconds hand and dial text for a luxury finishing touch.
The dial and bezel pip of the Geckota D1 feature high-quality Super-Luminova. This is used on many other luxury watches and holds an incredible amount of charge after only short exposure to light.
For the D1 Cobalt, we've used Super-Luminova BGW9, which glows neon blue. The dials on the D1 Mercury and D1 Noir use Super-Luminova Old Radium.
The D1’s case is a new design that’s unique to Geckota.
It features a distinctive sleek, angular aesthetic that stands out under perfect lighting conditions. The side of the case is polished and the lugs’ upper surface is vertical brushed. This honours the D1’s tool watch heritage, while being consistent with the watch’s role as a modern, luxury timepiece.
During the year-long development programme, the case went through several iterations before we were satisfied with it. These included two case variations and samples, one crown update and two case back improvements. Every detail of this new timepiece is the result of a carefully considered choice by the Geckota team.
The D1’s stainless steel bezel has been specifically designed to overhang the case’s 41mm angular design. The result is a timepiece with a more contemporary 42.5mm overall diameter.
The Geckota D1 is powered by one of the leading movements for micro brands, the Miyota 9015. This movement, which powers many higher-priced luxury watches, is highly regarded in the watch world.
The movement is equipped with 24 jewels that assist the movement to beat at a frequency of 28,800 bph. This gives a satisfyingly smooth sweep of the seconds hand. The 9015 has a 42-hour power reserve, hacking and hand-winding capability.
During development testing, the D1 achieved accuracy of +1 second/day, which rivals some of the best-known Swiss luxury watches.
As consumers, we understand the importance of attention to detail. The little things matter. That's why our watch box is simple, practically sized and made to last. The same care taken to create the D1 has also been used with the packaging.
Each Geckota D1 comes with two additional high-quality straps from our WatchGecko retail store along with a spring bar tool and screwdriver to make changing the straps over even easier.
The charcoal black wood effect box includes impressive features such as a snap shut close, Vintage Rouge coloured lining with space for the watch, the two additional straps and a compartment in the lid for all essential paperwork.
Each Geckota D1 also comes with our reassuring 2-year guarantee and support from our customer service team. This in-house team consists of experienced watch enthusiasts who are passionate about giving you support that is consistent with the quality of your Geckota D1.

We're a team of 12 watch enthusiasts who all love watches as much as you. We know what is expected when purchasing a watch and we understand that small details such as the types of hands used, or the finishing of the case are as important as the movement powering the watch or what colour looks best with another.
Having a varied staff is important to us. People from different walks of life bring their own way of thinking. This is crucial. Everything we do is a carefully considered thought out decision. From creating a user-friendly website, efficiently replying to every email we receive, running promotions and ensuring every order is packed with care and attention, everything we do is a carefully considered and thought-out.
We get to create what we enjoy, while respecting that your voice matters. The result? Products that deliver on their promises.
