Perihelion: The Deep Space Mining Game (Canceled)
A fresh take on worker placement featuring a unique orbital mechanic. Perihelion is a game of skill and strategy set in deep space.
### IMPORTANT ###
The name of this project has been changed to Perihelion. Some external resources will show the old name while we work with partners and reviewers to get this information updated.
Here's what our reviewers have said about Perihelion.
“[Perihelion] uses worker placement and income generation very effectively and will entice even the most stalwart strategy gamers.”
"Players will embark on a journey of industry that feels unique and quite adventurous all at the same time"
Each person controls a mining start-up. Players must plan ahead, anticipate asteroid orbits, hire workers to leverage their skills and sell ore to make money and keep their business running. All the while trying to keep other players from taking their ore and stealing their business!
Each game of Perihelion is unique. Each player starts with a randomly selected specialist and workers for hire are drawn from a deck. Players can never be certain what specialists will be available and when.
The impact of luck has been deliberately limited to reward skill and planning. The game incorporates several self-leveling mechanisms. These serve to keep the leader on their toes and keep everyone in the game all the way to the end!
The game is played over 12 turns and the aim is to extract and sell the most ore from the asteroids which orbit your HQ.
"Incorporating the movement of the turns with the lazy motion of an orbiting asteroid belt creates a great feel to the game. It also presents some unique game challenges."
Each player runs their mining company via their HQ board.
Each turn is made up of three phases:
As the game progresses more skilled employees become available – but beware their wages are higher!
A variety of ships visit over the course of a game.
“What I like about these cards is how they are constructed. There are a set number of spaces in each ship, but the number required by players if all of the contract spots are claimed is more than the capacity of the ship. This leads to intense competition between players to make sure they can get enough of their ore on the ships before they leave.” Boardgamequest.com
The player with the most victory points acts last, so picking the right workers and timing your lead in the game is crucial. The winner of the game is the person who has sold the most ore.
“The greatest attraction with [Perihelion] is that it succeeds in blending a unique theme with a worker placement and economic game.”
“The game is filled with interesting decisions for players to make. The different employees, orbital asteroid mechanic, and the unique worker placement mechanic all meld together beautifully to create one of the better Euro games I have played lately.”
We need your backing to make Perihelion a reality and bring it to the gaming community. The game is largely complete, and we have covered the cost of artwork and design, but we can’t pay for a full production run without your support.
We’re offering a discount for our Kickstarter backers. David Morton, Gareth Newton-Williams and Jason Allan are big fans of Euro-style board games. One evening we decided “let's do it, let's make a board game with our own unique mechanic”. Our friends who play tested the game absolutely loved it and so we thought we could actually publish our own game and maybe even become a classic…
To date, everything apart from the artwork has been done by ourselves and we have learnt loads. We would love to make a success of this game and use our experience to create other board games.
A big thanks goes to Mike Hornung, who really helped with play testing. Crucially, Mike inspired us to make the game as slick as possible to avoid too long a game! Risks and challenges
The game is pretty much complete. Our risk factors lies around the manufacturing and distribution of the game. We have spent time planning each step of the way, however, when it comes to using third parties sometimes things just take a little longer than planned!
We have a manufacturer lined up in Ningbo, China. They have run off test samples are ready to go for the full production run.
After production, it is in the hands of shipping and distribution. We have been liaising with companies to ensure that this process is smooth and that we can get the game into your hands as soon as possible!
We will make sure to keep our backers updated with our progress and will be completely transparent about how things are going.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
