Hi there folks,

We are so happy to start to see some of your unboxing pictures. We are told that 60% of Australia has been delivered already. As for the US, shipping will start by the end of next week. We have not heard back about Europe except to hear that the games are in stock and in the pipeline for processing.

Because our minis are plastic, here are some helpful tips about plastic miniatures and bendiness.

Thanks!

The Team at GBG

P.S. SPOILERS! For those of you who want to remain surprised, stop now. For those of you who have received your mystery box, read on…. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Now that the mystery is out, The mystery box is an alternative character tracker that takes the place of your paper and card trackers.

First off the back of the tracker is a card slot to hold your equipped items. There are status tokens with spaces for them that maintain a visual representation of the statuses you are affected by as you gain and lose them, which can happen frequently during a story. Finally, this new 3D tracker replaces the dials for Vita and Power Points with cubes which allow a quick tracking option.

The beauty of this mystery box item is that it saves space in your playing area and is a handy tool for tracking the aspects of your character that change the most frequently. Additionally, it works with the neoprene player mat, by placing it in the center and only having equipped items in the back slot of the mystery box.

During play testing we found this to be a useful tool that helped each player focus their concentration on game play. We will show you it with pictures in action once everyone gets theirs. Let us know what you think once you try yours out too!

What do they look like? I didn't get one, which is good because it sounds like one is not enough.

Wish I would have gotten 2 mystery boxes. Very useful. Need 2 for both characters I will play with! Anyone doesn't want there, I will happily buy it off you !

Still awaiting for delivery of my pledge in Australia. I'm just assuming I'm in the 40% or more likely the 15% now. I guess someone has to be in the last shipment :(

Okay, I just opened my game and took a look at the "mystery box". I am mystified by it. I got two of them and they are both the same. This is in direct contradiction to the update 9/12/16 which said this on the mystery boxes "Multiple copies of the mystery box in the same play group are not redundant". I am not sure how to take this. I would have assumed that meant each was different content. Even if I take and interpretation that they mean play group to be everyone playing that still fails, since my play group is me "i.e. solo mode". Also, the quality is horrible compared to the rest of the game.

Should Canadian backers expect to have their shipped out by the end of this week as well?

I posted earlier about seeing pictures of the $15 blister pack being rubbish and useless as I ordered player mats also. I got my 8kg package today and the quality of the minis, graphic design etc. is great and you will not be disappointed. Which just makes the the blister pack choice even more mystifying. I can only conclude that they were worried about the final shipping cost and decided to give us some air and cardboard sealed in plastic instead and call it a mystery box.

Fully agree with Cuddly Tiger. The biggest problem isn't the thing itself, I'm sure it's handy when playing. But the price seems ridiculous. $15 for a, (lets be honest), pretty cheap looking plastic tray.
      Compared to
$12 for a nice looking neoprene player mat.

If I had recived 5 trays, enough for all players, I would have been happy.

Another serious disappointment with the "mystery box" here; it looks like the packaging cheap electronics come from the poundshop in. I can see that they might be useful, and if they'd been $15 for five, I'd probably be OK with it. I'll also point out that you said "one per player", but what you actually meant is "one per character". I'm likely to be mostly playing solo or with one friend, but wanting a party of three or four characters for variety - so actually, I either wind up with one character on a tracker and the rest not, or I just don't use it. A total waste of money; I'd much rather have had another Colossal Dark Oak instead.

That last brings me to something else, though - I do agree with Ben Turner that the rest of the game looks amazing. Not had a chance to play it yet, but I'm really looking forward to getting it on the table. I just wish I hadn't wasted money on a blisterpack instead of getting more minis (or, y'know, a complete cardgame or something) instead.

@Ben- I think you are correct. A mystery box will never be as great as what I imagine it to be. I happen to like our tracker, but if you have been playing out what it could be in your mind (and for as long as people have waited) it can be tough. I love its use, and we went through many ideas to try to make it something that would work for every level.
      @Aloysius - from the USA

After delivering a great game, they have completely ruined their image with those crappy mystery boxes...and this is what will remain - strongly undermined confidence.

I think what happened is they took one of the $15 payments for the mystery box and used that $15 to produce all the mystery boxes for everyone, a couple of pennies per item, that seems feasible! :)

Wow - this is bad. When you go to a bar and order the (pretty expensive) "Mystery Cocktail" you expect something even remotely drinkable and not a dirty glass filled up with something that might have been produced by a human organism. Seriously. This tracker looks dirt cheap AND it is ugly as hell which totally breaks the immerson of the game. If you guys produced it with the money you got from the mystery-pledges, it was a massive miscalculation - and when you´ve seen the outcome you should have said "allright - this is not gonna work out - let´s tank this mystery-thing and give them their money back." Instead of actually delivering PACKAGING MATERIAL for 15$ !! I´m kinda shocked.

    15. chang on

so HYPED!! this would be here soon!! :)

ps peeps NEVER buy "mystery box", surprise add are only good when they are free. is natural human respond, in general, to overhype a mystery and be dissapointed.

After all these comment on the mystery box (again, it was always going to take everyone's attention, what a shame) I would like to balance this with...

... the game looks freaking amazing. Some Gloomhaven-y feels, some Shadows of Brimstone feels, amazing large scale minis, so many cards / terrain boards / encounters and all beautifully produced. Also the manual reads very nicely too.

Don't want to let my confused or critical statements about the mystery box overshadow this. A little grumpy at my $75 spend on "blind box addons" but overjoyed at my $300 spend on "just a ton of amazing game".

    20. Ben Turner

I've just spent 5-10 minutes working out if and how "it works with the neoprene player mat, by placing it in the center"? I guess if you place it in the center-right, it covers all the equipped slots and abilities section (not sure the back row of the tracker is going to accomodate all those cards?) whilst leaving the backpack / mystic knowledge / companions spots free. It also kind of gets in the way of those token spots though. Unless they also go in the tracker sideways in the circular spots - looks like they'd get easily overlooked there though?

Basically, I don't see any synergy between the tracker and the playmat at all! You are going to have to help me out with a picture of this one in the future I think. I mean, still a usable albeit not too pretty thing, but I just don't see how they were designed to work smoothly with the playmats in any way?

Mine is arriving next week, and I have just seen the pictures of the extra piece of "packaging material" that I paid an extra $15 ($22 AUD).

Well-done, you have just become a future case-study for KS creators on how to upset your backers and trash your companies reputation. Honestly, what a load of rubbish GBG; at what point in your production meetings did a blister pack seem like a good idea without one of you saying "err.. maybe not...". Do the right thing and apologise to your backers and refund them for each mystery box they purchased. If you don't then many KS backer will rightly never back a GBG game again.

My sentiments are right in line with Ben. I bought 5 thinking they would be player aids (and will reserve final judgement until they are in hand), but my initial reaction was "meh". I love the idea of a custom player dashboard (CMON's are really good), but these remind me more of a chit tray I use for my wargames. I really want to see one loaded out and sitting on a player mat. If someone finds a picture of that, please share.

I'm trying to remain moderate in my response - I recall jumping up and down and waving my arms when the mystery box was announced saying "NOOOOO GBG, unless this is an amazing thing in the box, you are going to get bad press" - and when the later revelation came out you wanted one per player, I knew this was only going to end badly, no matter what.

So I don't want to jump on what is, and always was, going to be a badly received idea - suspect plenty of others will do that. But I do feel the packaging is the biggest let down here - the tracker will probably work out very nicely - but to but these "plastic blister pack" boxes on the table next to the other nicely crafted bits of the game is just ugly looking. I keep showing them to people, and they say on first glance "Oh, you haven't opened it yet?"

Yeah, I wouldn't have bought these on sight for $15 (or more to the point, $75 for 5, as why would you not buy one per player). I recall reading "The more people who add-on the Mystery Box, the better the item" - can only assume not enough people bought one? Something in solid plastic would of been better (maybe broken the budget - but again, if something isn't going to be AMAZING, don't even think of selling it blind) but it is what it is now.

Nonetheless, I voted "cool, but not worth $15" on BGG, and that's how I feel. Now I have them, I will use them, and no doubt appreciate the extra organisational bling it adds (just not visual bling). Perhaps function over form is the sliver lining here, and certainly I can see myself thinking "OK, those were really handy" once I've played with them - e.g. I could grow to love them, with time. Maybe?!

Well, I only got two of them and I’d be happy to take yours off your hands.

Sorry GBG but the Mystery Box is more than a huge let down. It's a slap in face. We backers invested in your product and supported you. We gave you a large amount of our hard earned money for this game, and for the most part it is an excellent product. Unfortunately all that joy I felt as I unpacked your game went out the window when I realised I'd paid $15 for... that!!

Had I been sent one of CMON's equivalent for $15 I'd have been annoyed, but this feels like I've been taken for a fool. What did they cost you make? $2 at most?!

@Julie - sorry, but speaking honestly, I fail to see any beauty in this expensive piece of tat, nor is it worth $3 let alone $15 - it looks like plastic packaging that would normally be chucked out to be recycled. If GBG were charged more than $1 per item for these then wow, really?

Take a look at CMON's plastic player boards to see something well made.
