Guess What?
I’m another artist asking for money.

Money for what?
To help fund a month-long Art Residency at Brush Creek Art Foundation near Saratoga, Wyoming. This would help fund my art supplies and travel, as well as a portion of my food and living expenses. Brush Creek Art Foundation is providing studio space and most of the housing and food expense.

Here is what I’m asking for:
Art Materials = $1800
Hotel = $250
Gas = $200
Food = $450
Living Expenses = $900

Total = $3,600

What are you going to do at this Residency?
I’m am planning, organizing and creating an art installation to be shared with the public in October of 2016 at the Kasum Contemporary Art Gallery in Oklahoma City. The basic concept will be about connections; how we connect with each other, how we are connected by our interests, circumstance and chance.

What kind of art?
I’m going to use beeswax.

The hell you say? Beeswax? What kind of art is that?
Well, it’s called encaustic art. Beeswax is combined with dammar resin and pigment to create quite beautiful, colorful paintings that have extraordinary depth and feeling.

So what can you make with Encaustic?
You can create quite beautiful, luminous paintings. You can also encase paper, objects and fibers to create mixed media art. Encaustic monotypes are one of my favorite things to create with wax and paper.

Where did you come up with this idea of painting with wax?
I didn’t, it’s actually an ancient technique that is over 2000 years old. The word encaustic comes from the ancient Greek, meaning to burn in. Encaustic painting goes as far back as the 5th century BC. Legend has it that the Greeks applied coatings of wax and resin to waterproof their ships, and that this led to pigmenting the wax for decoration.

How does it work?
The wax, which is beeswax and dammar resin crystals melted together, is colored with dry pigment or oil paint. It is kept molten during the painting process. The wax is applied with bristle brushes in layers to an absorbent surface, such as birch wood panels. The layers are fused with a heat gun or propane torch. You can also encase paper, objects and fibers to create mixed media art. Encaustic monotypes are one of my favorite things to create with wax and paper. They are created by melting pigmented wax on a hot plate, and then transfer the design to paper.

What is so special about Encaustics?

By suspending pigments in beeswax, encaustic allows me to display the vibrancy of paint with a luminosity and depth not captured by other artistic media. I love the extraordinary effects that can be achieved, the wonderful sense of transparency that you can play with, and the richness of textural possibilities. What I enjoy most is the involvement with the process itself, the sheer love of beautiful natural materials, and the completion of the process by sealing it with fire.

Can you tell me more about the installation? I will be striving to break out of the confines of the square panels I usually work within, and create an intriguing encaustic landscape. My goal is to create a room-size installation that is made up of encaustic paintings, encaustic monotypes, paper and fiber. My vision is to combine many pieces into one huge, dramatic work.

Sounds like you’re pretty committed. Why is this residency so important to you?
This residency would give me the time, the solitude, and the focus that I need to start such a large project. This would be an invaluable opportunity to research and develop my idea, and to think through the process of creating such a large installation.

Why should I care?
Besides helping an up-and-coming artist with her dream, you can participate in the installation! Part of the project will be incorporating art from other people. I will accept any art, writing, and creation on paper to be used in this installation. You can mail that to me, or if you’re in the Oklahoma City area, you can come by my studio for a visit and some creative time (Paseo School of Art, 3110 N. Walker, 405-205-8990). Take a look at my video to see how plan I to use paper art, mixed media, and monotypes to create this installation.

But in case that is not enough, how about these items?

You ROCK for becoming part of my installation. Even if you don’t send money, taking the time to read about my project sends positive energy my way and inspires me to take this creative journey. Thank you!

Risks and challenges

Challenges are everywhere, but my biggest challenge is time. Having the time to create, think, process, and plan will be something I will fight to obtain. I'm not a full-time artist; I have what I call my “day job” that funds the bills that come with living life. Because this is an incredible opportunity, I will be taking a month off my job, which will be unpaid leave, so finances will be a challenge. I am budgeting my money and time as best I can, without knowing what will come my way.

I am a graphic designer and marketer by day, so I plan to use my skills to further my project as well as fund it. My plan is to work part-time taking on freelance jobs, that I can work on during odd hours, to pay for my living costs. I have also applied for grants and plan on doing some fundraising projects to help with the financial aspect of this project.
