About this project
Do you love photography, art, what makes it tick and hunting for ways to make it better? Then this film is for you and it's like nothing you've ever seen.
From Gavin Seim - Pictorialist, Portraitist, Writer and producer of the EXposed series, comes a film of photography, composition, history and of the nuances that have made the greatest artists in history shine. A journey over highways and byways of America, photography and history itself.
Experience the beauty of stunning light, landscapes, people and time, in a film that's part education, part discovery and a lot of fun. Join an epic American road trip that dares to ask, What Makes a Great Photograph? And then dares to answer it!
Help make Photographics happen and join Gavin Seim as he seeks out the techniques and history that have helped form centuries of art and even photography itself. Experiencing the light along the way as Gavin studies how techniques and knowledge both present and the past effect our images today.
We're on the road right now filming the first leg of Photographics. What you see in the trailer are scenes from out here, right now. Every stitch recorded for Photographics.
We're keeping the minimum goal small because we know from experience that Photographics can be a success and we want to make it happen. But we need your backing.
With your help, Photographics will finish even more stunning than it begin as we study art and light in a way that's never been done. We'll use the funds from you to pay the expenses and put even more energy and quality into the film. Be a part of history in the making and help the Seim Studios crew blow you away.

Some Roads we'll travel during Photographics...
Here's some of what we'll talk about as we travel to some of the most beautiful places in the world and see the light first hand.
Photography's Amazing History:
Find out where we came from and why it matters in a overview of photographic history that will have you seeing images in a new light.
The Depths of Composition:
From little known compositional concepts that have helped define hundreds of years of art, to space, line, tone and frame and perceived space. Experience what makes a perfect composition come alive and learn from the masters of history.
Where Science Meets Art:
Photography is born is science and when we take that side by side with the art and subtleties that make a stunning image we'll come that much closer to the question - What makes a great image.
Light of the Masters:
From Renaissance painters to master photographers that set the stage for a new era in art. We'll look at works that stand apart and guide us to a deeper understanding of how refined images are made, how light, tone and color can carry the senses anywhere the maker wants..
The Depths of Color:
Color tells it's own story. It carries on a never ending dance with tone and composition and by looking deeper at color and how it can be used we'll better understand how to make a great image.
What Makes a Great Image:
Our goal is not an easy one. We'll journey thousands of miles and study art and photographs passing centuries of knowledge. Our goal is not to define rules but to understand the guides and help each one of us understand what makes a great image.
Photographics is an unforgettable film that will teach you things you never know about art and photography and have you walking away with new challenges that will shape the way you make and see art for the rest of your life.

Risks and challenges
A grand project, meant not to just talk about photography and art, but to experience it in the wild - Photographics is no easy task, but Gavin is well qualified to take it on. Here's where we stand.
1: About 50% of the filming for Photograohics is already done. There's more to do and lots of editing, but we're on track and ahead of the game.
2: Setbacks could include trip delays, editing problems and delays getting the disks made. But we have done it before and are feeling good. Downloads should be a breeze as we can handle large loads on release day with our S3 file serving. With the experience of producing EXposed under our belt we're feeling good. We released that last year just couple days behind schedule, but the launch went off great.
3: Much of Photographics is filmed outdoors on location so we can not only talk, but show. Weather can be an issue, but since the filming segments are done on trips generally over a month long, we are very flexible. If things don't work one day we try the next. We've gotten versatile at setting up and getting the footage we need. We will have no lack of material.
4: We should not experience collaboration problems as the film is being produced in house. It's production is flexible. We have already traveled over 2 months filming and laying out chapters. The rest should go smoothly.
A bit about our experience level:
Gavin started in Photography at age twelve and has been learning ever since. He operates a studio gallery in Central WA and is known not only for is images, but his photographic editing tools, writing experience and educational work.
A trained presenter, Gavin has been hosting the Pro Photo Show for over five years and presenting to audiences since age sixteen. This is not his first time in front of the camera.
In 2012 Gavin produced EXposed, a film about exposure and using light better in photography. He knows the challenges and needs of producing a series like this and is fully equipped to take it on with his small team from Seim Studios.
Many of the challenges and planning have already been conquered. Yet Photographics is meant to be as breathtaking as it is informative. With your backing the project will take on it's own life and help us manage the resources to make it even more stunning.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
