Across the only shared border of third and first world countries, two vastly different cultures collide on the soccer/futbol field.
Only 10 days left in the Kickstarter campaign! We are hoping to raise another $3000 dollars to purchase the rights to any game footage required and produce high-quality animation to give this project the something extra that the subject deserves. Be a part of this memorable film. For as little as $25 you can get a DVD of the finished film half of what it will be when released. For $50 a DVD and limited T-shirt.
Thank you so much for all of your amazing support. We are blown away by the generosity. Even though we have hit our $5,000 goal within the first four days please continue to pledge so we can produce an even greater film.
If people continue to give we can: 1. purchase more game footage to include in the film 2. hire an animator to do a short history of the US-Mexico. 3. track down Bora Milutinović for an interview - the only person to coach both the USA and Mexican national soccer teams.
...and so much more!
The road to finishing this epic documentary has been long, but also a journey fueled by passion and discovery.
In February 2009, we (Pablo, Mike and Roberto) traveled, without a crew, to the first World Cup 2010 Qualifying match between the US and Mexico in Columbus, Ohio to decide whether there was a film in all of this.
In August 2009 we went to Mexico City for the return match. The difference between the two country's level of passion for the sport was obvious, and the historical and cultural context for the passion was a revelation.
Two years and hundreds of hours of footage later we know that, not only is there a dynamic story about two vastly different soccer cultures, but we have a film exploring the growing Mexican-American population's divided, and often mixed, national and cultural allegiances.
Not content to make just a “sports doc”, we searched out and interviewed academics and soccer analysts to get a broader and deeper understanding of the issues we uncovered.
After another year of shooting and editing we felt the need to find a few compelling portraits to illustrate all the complex themes explored. During the fall of 2010 we identified these "subjects" for in-depth profiles:
FRANCISCO “PACO” TORRES aka EL GRINGO and HERCULES GOMEZ - Two Mexican-Americans who play professionally for Mexican Club Pachuca. They both could have chosen to play for the Mexican national team, but instead have chosen to play for the USA.
PORTERVILLE CHIVAS SOCCER ACADEMY STUDENTS - We will profile aspiring young Mexican-Americans playing for a soccer academy in California's Central Valley built by Mexico's largest professional club, CD Chivas de Guadalajara, to find young talent among the migrant farm worker's children.
The money we raise will allow us to travel back to Mexico and to parts of the US Southwest to complete production of these missing components in addition to a final sound mix, graphics, rights to footage, music composition, online editing, DVD authoring and film festival entrance fees.
PLEASE HELP US FINISH THIS GREAT PROJECT!
